That would make sense, but wouldn't that also suggest the Virus was in Italy prior to initially believed?

Hard to know without a timeline of their deaths. Problem is we can't really retroactively test recovered people and know if they also had the virus, so only the deaths show up.

It will eventually start to level off, but when exactly is a matter of speculation.

Epidemics do not grow exponentially, they grow logistically.

The rate of the growth of the curve depends on the size of the infected population, the size of the uninfected population, and the rate of infection transmission. For example, if a small population is infected, and there isn't much transmissability (e.g. the infected are appropriately quarantined), no new infections occur and the disease is "contained". If a small population is infected, the uninfected population is high, and transmission goes on unchecked, then you will see a rapid rise in cases. Eventually, once the majority of the population has been infected, with the recovered population developing immunity, we will see fewer newer cases as there are fewer people to infect.

In the US, we are far, far past containment. Any White House official who says we're "relatively contained" should promptly be ignored on these matters. The strategy now is mitigation. We can slow the rate of infection spread by appropriate social distancing, washing hands, don't touch your face, etc. That will help flatten out the curve a bit, but not end an epidemic.

Again, we should be in mitigation mode because if a bunch of people get infected at once, our hospital system will get overwhelmed. I've been in and around hospitals for the good part of last decade, either as a student or a doctor. Believe me when I say adminstrators love to cut costs whichever way possible to boost profits, not limited to employing a bare minimum of healthcare workers. It's a strained system as is.

If we can flatten the curve, hopefully we can turn this into a slow flood instead of a tsunami. While most of us young folks will likely be OK by the end of this all, we need to cast aside our idea of American exceptionalism.

What has happened in Italy can happen to us.

To clarify, I posted that in the speculation thread because it came from an Italian source known to me who I consider trustworthythat this is what is being saidto explain their statistics. I cannot verify it with healthcare professionals.

Not exactly. This isn't really about "old" cases, but rather that they're supposedly being meticulous about testing suspicious cases who are dyingright nowin their wards, so they're supposedly catching people who die of undifferentiated pneumonia in order to make sure they create accurate records of the death, even though they were never recorded as COVID-19 cases while alive. The official death rate is therefore getting decoupled from the official infection rate.

In general, I understand that most countries are not doing this. When China reclassified a large number of clinically confirmed cases - not confirmed by the regular test - they also reclassified the deaths resulting from those cases, because they had previously been considered general pneumonia/heart failure deaths, rather than COVID-19 deaths. In most countries, they primarily seem to be interested in identifying living cases to get them into isolation. If you die of COVID-19 and didn't get tested while you were alive, it may be the case that you never will.

Just hit case 6 in NZ. The tool concert guy passed it on to another. Knowing his wife was getting tested for it puts him in the same category as deliberate aids infectors in my eyes. He should be facing prison time.

Otherwise I think our government has done quite a good job. Cases seems to have stalled.

Lmaooooo not sure if srs.

They've hardly done fukall to stop spread a long time ago like they should have.
Cases have certainly not stalled. I can guarantee you we will be in the thousands of cases by weeks end. The numbers only seem good now because we haven't been, and probably still aren't, testing everyone we should be.

trump the other day “i shut down all flights from china, and people criticized me for this decision, but i did it, not many people agreed with me but i had to do it”

is he being serious or does he think americans are dumb as fuk?does he know that every country did the same? its just common sense, why does he act like he did something out of this world? he should shut down flights from SK italy etc. he literally has done nothing to contain it. he doesnt test somit doesnt look bad when in reality the numbers are already in the thousands.

when he talked about the cruise ship he also said “its not our fault” its actually quite amazing

Pretty sure no matter which way you go politically, we can all agree the government, Trump included, did a very poor job of handling this.

I agree that he has handled this poorly and done some stupid things. You say it was common sense, but CNN’s top doctor called it racist, so that’s probably what he’s talking about. As far as how we’re handling it as a country, I think the response should be determined on a local level and the federal govt. should just be there to offer whatever is needed by those local areas(though I do agree with you about the travel bans...they definitely dropped the ball on that). As far as how we’re handling it as a country, we won’t really know for weeks(maybe months). Right now it doesn’t look good so I’m not expecting much more than really bad results, but we honestly don’t know how it will unfold.

I agree, but Trump can't panic people
If you panic people like it's the end of the world, then people cause chaos

Obama didn't do anything for Ebola until 1000 Americans died
Trump put together a task force after 1 death

CDC really dropped the ball w/ the federal government not having any workings tests for months & refusing WHO tests

But, New York just called in the national guard to assist w/ outbreak in the state

New daily cases are NOT down. In fact, they're up. We just had the highest day of new cases yesterday. Outside of the single day in mid Feb when they restructured how they take in data.

Any of you guys skipping the gym because of this? I pretty much have been avoiding the public as much as possible, but still go to the gym but realize how contagious that place can be. Don't want to give up my gains though.

just give it a week or two and see how big the spread will be .... and you know why??? cause idiots kept thinking that they are Doctors, and the corona was just a scam, nd going out, getting drunk and sitting in groups will do nothing............. now they are paying for it

unless they stop everything, close everything, everyone on house arrest , the spread will be bigger, badder and more aggressive

Trump pushing a tax break. Why TF do we need a tax break? This is the least of our worries, if anything they should come up with a relief plan for people not able to work if it comes to that. BRB, quarantined or in hospital for 3 weeks, but due to my tax break I now have an extra zero percent in my bank on payday since used up all my sick time.

I’m pretty sure they’re also contemplating relief on a personal level. The tax breaks for certain industries are to lessen the impact and minimize job cuts. If you’re concerned about someone missing work for three weeks you should also worry about someone losing their job for good, right?
