Well, that is a straw man.
At the most ... the very most it's 2% in that age bracket. Most of them in their 70's or 80's


So.. if 2% of those in their 70's or 80's die. ... that isn't very different than their normal mortality rate.

It's considerably more deadly than the flu, which doesn't mean much for the young and healthy since the mortality rate is still extremely low.

But it's not a replacement for their current mortality rate. It is an addition. The body is also a single system, meaning that this can make them vulnerable to bacterial infections and so on.

But from what I've heard from a couple experts, the biggest problem may be that it's happening all at once. A few elderly getting the coronavirus here and there is pretty inconsequential. The problem is if it spreads and they all get it at once. Then we're looking at a shortage of hospital beds, staff, and supplies. If something happens to you and you need to go to the hospital during that time, you may be fuked.

The death rate from seasonal flu is typically around 0.1% in the U.S., according to The New York Times.

That is the average. It's the average from those 80 and over to kids.
No kids have died from it at all.

This is exactly the issue. In places that took these extraordinary preventative measures and didn't overwhelm their healthcare system, the mortality is 1%. In places where the disease spread unfettered until it was too late (Wuhan and Milan), the mortality is more like 4%. The AHA estimates that there will be 96m infections and 480,000 deaths in the US. That's an 0.5% mortality rate and assumes that the healthcare system is not stressed and can handle all the cases properly. If we take the "it's just the flu" attitude and don't try to slow the spread as much as possible, and we get a 4% mortality rate, that'smillionsof preventable deaths in the US. That's what this is all about - literally millions of US lives can be saved.

No one should panic that they're going to die from this or that this is the apocalypse that will wipe out the human race. That's not happening, but we should accept the restrictions and cancellations and on-line classes and spectatorless sporting events for a couple months to prevent millions of deaths, which could be your parents or grandparents or friends with cancer or diabetes or hypertension.
