I'm in the ICU quarantined for COVID-19, AMA

Male nurse, been miscing for a long time now. Got admitted to the hospital this week for bilateral PNA, a couple other complications r/t the PNA, and a few days into my stay they decided to quarantine me pending a COVID-19 swab result.

AMA since I am quarantined and have nothing to do in my little jail cell.

edit: FYI, my window view is a view of a cemetery across the street lol

Generalized weakness, cough (productive), low grade fever. When symptoms started I still had 5 shifts left in a 28 day stretch, felt like allergies / being ran down.

Once I got to the end of my days off, I spiked a 104+ fever for 48 hours that wouldn't come down with medications / cold showers, could barely function other than to eat small amounts of food and drink a lot of fluids, and then suspected that I had developed PNA based on my shortness of breath, fever and lack of strength.

Nah, not about the virus itself. If I am indeed positive it'll just be a PITA to get 2 negative tests to get back to work. My pneumonia is more worrisome and it's bacterial in nature. Sucks because I'm allergic to three major antibiotics.

Not inaccurate since you aren't in the age demographic with a high mortality rate. I have comorbidities (immunocompromised) and with bacterial PNA already on board it could be more of a threat. But since my symptoms are improving I assume a.) I'll test negative or b.) I'm on the better end of it

yeah, I tried to fight it off at home but knowing that I had had some COVID-19 patient exposures/potential exposures and I wasn't getting better I didn't want to quarantine at home anymore.

That's so depressing. Pic? How many confirmed patients were you in contact with prior to this?

I also work for a health system, not clinical, but everyone is going crazy around here. We're now exploring WFH options for administrative employees but currently have IT challenges of being able to support that.

Does COVID19 cause viral pneumonia or bacterial pneumonia. Anyone know?

Bacterial pneumonia is quite common in recirculated air systems. Viral pneumonia is an entire different beast.

This was my first thought, when I have an epileptic seizer I have them take me to the hospital with movies on the tv to pick and a food menu where you get to pick your meals from a pretty big menu and can order snacks from 7am-7pm, this is the cardiac unit though idk which one your in. I also order in food there lol

Do the nurses and doctors that come in your room have to wear anything special? Can you only see family/visitors through glass?

if I am negative, at minimum 3/15/20 because my symptoms were 3/1/20. if I get a positive test, it will be until I get two negatives.

1 confirmed, 4-5 possibles. our hospital is turning into idiocracy trying to handle a simple 1-2 at a time because we're already full from normal conditions. it's dark right now so a pic wouldn't really turn out lol

i'm honestly torn. if I'm positive, once I'm well, I'm done worrying about catching it / getting quarantined / interfering with work. I mean I'm exposed to sick people every day all day at work, so I feel like I'll be in a continual limbo lol

it's horrible. the meatloaf had the texture of a shoe.

my friends from work have been bringing me food/iced tea, sliding them into the room and shutting the door. it's like being on the other side of the glass for a prison call

nurses avoid me like the plague, doc's come in once a day. I feel like an animal at the zoo ever since they decided to go this route. I waited 7 hours for someone to replace my non functioning IV... so I just called my buddy from ER and he came and started it for me.

I am now quarantined from visitors. They come and I call them on my cell through a glass door and we stare at each other awkwardly.

the weird thing about this whole thing is I technically can't leave per the DPH who would call authorities. So, I can't get thrown out of the hospital either...meaning I basically can't be told no LOL. I'm not wearing most of the monitoring equipment, ordering out food, etc lol

For our patient population that is vulnerable (immunocompromised, old, etc) it's a legit threat. The mortality rate and inoculation rates speaking for themselves. For yourself? Probably more or less a common cold, but, if you have grandparents or come into direct contact with the elderly, you're a potential vector. Plus, we're not yet sure of what indirect contact can cause spread -- door knobs, etc. so that population is extremely vulnerable.

On a resource note, my hospital is already essentially full most of the year. Adding an additional 10% patients would be back breaking to the organization and result in everyone receiving suboptimal care and probable increase in mortality.

Oddly enough I don't think the impact of the virus on the individual is that bad, however, I think its impact on the herdisthat bad.

Damn OP, sorry to hear about your luck. I’m an RT and since all I deal with is patients with resp issues I’m kind of worried myself. Just hoping that patients who are intubated have a lower risk of transmitting the disease. I’m on Humira too, so am immunocompromised as well

do they require you get the viral pneumonia vaccine as a nurse? I alway get one cause some years I’ve been in the hospital a lot and nice grub hub to the rescue.

The above is the answer i was looking for, not your bishy chit. I'm aware that it's not good, but I wanted an inside perspective from someone who has dealt with patients and potentially felt the symptoms first hand.
