Airlines want a bailout

How about you take some of the billions of dollars you made, making us all pay for our first and second checked bag, or banning checked bags, for crappy meals, for paying to select any seat, for being hours delayed and not giving any credit, retrofitting old planes to pack in more tiny seats and fist yourselves?

American Airlines in 2015, made a$7.6 billion profit— compared, for example, to profits of about $500 million in 2007 and less than $250 million in 2006. It earned billions in profit annually for the rest of the decade.

The government should threaten more regulation if they receive any taxpayer money and they'll shut the fuk up about it real quick. 2008 was a mistake now every company thinks the govt should bail them out

$1.4 billion profit in 2019.

$44 billion gross in 2019.

3% return.

Try again.

Airlines are a low-margin business, not that far away from grocery stores (1%). Getting shut down for 2 months with 0 income and tens of billions in capital sitting idle will kill them.

If you want to fly a plane AFTER this all blows over, it's going to require a 9/11-ish stimulus.

Airlines are a staple of our economy, its not just the money they make, its the transportation services they provide. If airlines go down, our economy will go to sh*t. Srs.

government regulated travel bans, tell people to stay indoors and "self distance" and wonder why the airlines are losing a ton of money right now.

If every dime they made for the last two years went into cash reserves/a rainy day fund, it wouldn't last them a month of normal operations. You can actually save a lot higher percentage of your income than they can.

So your point is since they only made $1.4billionin profit last year so we should bail them out because that's not a very high margin.

Prepare for a recession=/=pandemic

You guys are straight up retarded.

If they require a bailout they will get a bailout. Your tax dollars will help bail them out. There is nothing that you are willing to do about that because it's not an actual problem for you. Some of you belong in a third world ****hole.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

which you don't realize that even with all that, they're not making chit.

But thereal point is they have to spend $43 billion to make $1.4 billion, and right now they are probably still spending the better part of that $43 billion and making nearly zero. In good times, airlines don't earn that much relative to their high costs. When a crisis comes, those costs eat them alive.

Air travel is a national interest, as dopamine72 said, and they guys providing it are going to be bankrupt in a few months.

So! With that being said, your options are now

A. Bailout
B. Nationalize (and if you pick this option, I don't want to hear you say chit about socialism)
C. Go without air travel as a country.

I agree. I am not inherently against the bailout, as we cannot afford to lose the airlines. Nobody with an IQ above 85 believes the free market is actually a thing, so there is no way we could actually lose them. A large part of our economy is founded upon air travel, and it isnt like there is such a thing as a small airline business. Just too many hurdles and barriers to entry. I would just be much more willing to provide them with this money if they were doing their part.

Yeah give the airlines a bailout, and all other companies with low margins.

And also, me, I wasted all my money gambling, trying to make more money for myself. Plz give me money now I have none left and I will put it back into the economy I swear. Plz send bailout to me asap.

I am shocked that a company that offers to take you from Boston to Miami and back for $99 with free bags would need a bailout when they stop selling tickets.

Some of the big ones make HUGE profits, but the cost to run airlines is huge. Take away 90% of the customers, and still have those flights happen, and all those profits are gone.

When you cheap the F out on every flight you buy, this is what you get.

No. If anyone should get a bailout, it should go to people who cannot work because their jobs are closed. They need the money especially if they have to go to the hospital for COVID-19 or they have rent to pay or something.

Nobody “requires” a bailout. The great thing about capitalism is if you fail, you fail. Maybe they should have put those $40 bag fees and tax cuts into savings instead of stock buybacks.

okay where do you draw the line? there are numerous other industries that are taking sizable losses because of this pandemic... how many of them do you bail out? starbucks has closed many locations across the world for the time being, should you shell out a few hundred billion to cover their revenue? lol

btw this isnt going away anytime soon. wanna cover their share for 5-6 months bro?
