How do you suspect they contracted it, and why are you so sure your uncle will die?

It's hard for someone people who have never been loved to comprehend.

Sorry for your loss, OP. My condolences to you and your family.

So your uncle is healthy as a horse for an 80 year old and you still think he'll be one of the 15% or so that die? Why?

Sorry to hear about your aunt.

I'm a third generation hospital employee (nurse and respiratory therapist above me) hospitals are never empty. about 2/3 of beds are full at any given time. The lobbies and waiting rooms are empty because the hospitals aren't allowing people in unless they are already very ill, and those people are moved to beds immediately so you will not be able to see them.

idk what was said in other threads, but I am more than qualified to explain that one. Hopefully that clears it up.

Sorry for your loss, op.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Lol at letting emotions get in the way of your perception of things. You say in your own post how they were already susceptible then use this as evidence as to how bad things are. I bet you think I should be kept by the police in my own house and not allowed to leave because of your emotionality right now too, don't you? Fukking *******.

Religious services are excluded from the stay at home order in michigan (inexplicably.) I don't know what they will do. I will not be attending regardless because I refuse to participate in the spread.

People go to areas accessible to the public such as the parking lot or the lobby. And then due to severe lack of knowledge they assume hospitals treat patients in these area... leading the misconception that hospitals are empty.

Similarly, due to privacy laws videos of packed ICUs cannot be recorded and just nonchalantly shared on the internet. People take this “lack of evidence” of dying patients to be the evidence that there is no patient.

I'm not saying it works, but it's too soon to say that it does not. Michigan Medicine has been using Chloroquine since their very first COVID-19 patient (I personally know a pharmacist student involved in that mans treatment)
Apparently you don't understand what a hypothesis is, there's zero evidence of proven results in a lab setting or I would've been informed of it by now.

Antimalarials treat parasitic infections, not viral.

Even if it did have an effect it would be almost immeasurably minuscule, like taking acetaminophen for bone infection pain.

Again there's already a shortage because it's not a commonly needed drug, but what the hell do I know I'm only a practitioner for a major hospital right now.

How are they any less important because they were susceptible? My uncle has very manageable conditions and would've easily lived another decade, probably more.

I don't think you shouldn't be allowed to leave either. I just don't think you should be leaving and interacting with other people if you don't have to. If you have a legitimate need, go take care of it. Just put a hold on the unnecessary gatherings until we get this under control. Why is that so unreasonable? I've been doing that for over a month. Why are you so special?

Chloroquine is a zinc ionophore. Zinc is a known antiviral, and chloroquine allows zinc to be placed within your cells. It's been shown to be effective against SARS in vitro.
Does this mean it will work for SARS-COV-2 in humans? Nope. It does mean that itcould.

I understand fully what a hypothesis is, and I understand fully that there is no proof that chloroquine works for COVID-19. But the opposite has not been proven.

I don't understand what you are disagreeing with?

This. And you're not seeing patients dying in the lobby because EMS is transferring patients throughout hospitals to get proper treated when certain hospitals are already full.

I think the internet hyping up Chloroquine is premature and potentially dangerous. Dangerous in the sense that I’m sure there are young and uninformed/misinformed people out there letting loose on social contacts because they think they can just ask for a script and it will all be ok.

The only two studies to date done on this are both flawed. When I say studies I’m not talking about articles of doctors swearing it’s effective. Fortunately that’s not how you demonstrate a drugs effectiveness and safety. The primary study that got all this started is the French study where the author touted that it is 100% effective in curing his 42 subjects. It was 26 that were administered the drug, not 42. And of those 26, he only included 20 for the final results, excluding 6 because they did not finish the treatment, regardless of the reason they stopped treatment. Three people stopped because they became critical and were transferred. One stopped when he died. That’s irresponsible of a researcher to publish misleading information knowing this.

Also in the 20 patients it reduced the duration of “sickness” to 6 days. A Japanese antiviral (yes actually meant for viruses) Avigan reduced viral shedding to 4 days. You basically don’t hear about it in the news or from anyone.

You'll note that I never claimed that it worked. I said there has been no high quality study confirming or denying its effectiveness, and that it has shown some promise in vitro with similar viruses.
High quality studies are being done as we speak so we will know more soon.

I'm disagreeing with the use of it entirely for treatment of Covid for reasons already stated.

We do not administer drugs on a chance, Azithromycin and Plaquenil interaction often causes severe arrhythmia on top of the present respiratory issues, leading to arrest.

We administer drugs on a chance all the time through compassionate use and Right to Try.
It still requires a prescription so in theory people's physicians will be taking their medical history into account before prescribing it.

I also know that many physicians are prescribing it (often to themselves) as a prophylactic and I do take issue with that. People using it for diseases it has proven efficacy for should have first priority imo.

btw want to have a contest to see who can make a better version of a meal (srs)

we can make a thread and have misc judge. Seems like it'd be fun to have some non COVID threads

I mean, he is a point. My uncle died of a massive heart attack at 44 a few weeks ago, don’t hear people harping on about cholesterol on the daily. The frenzy over this virus is absurd.

It still requires a prescription so in theory people's physicians will be taking their medical history into account before prescribing it.

I also know that many physicians are prescribing it (often to themselves) as a prophylactic and I do take issue with that. People using it for diseases it has proven efficacy for should have first priority imo.

Don't worry about it.

Maybe it's because multiple people aren't currently packed in ICUs around the world with heart disease.
