I was married in the 1980's, it seemed like a less complicated time and people in general had less hang ups.

Grew up in the 80s and it was a great time. Original movies that are now being used as garbage reboots, music was cool. People weren't complaining about wanting to leave America or burning the flag. PC Police/SJW's didn't exist, no drag queen story time for little kids or transformers on talk shows. When men were still men and not a bunch of pussy neckbeard soyboys running around. Only thing I wouldn't give up would be the internet,don't care about Fakebook but YouTube is still valuable most of the time.

Was it really that good? I know it wasn't all gravy (inflation, Iran, interest rates, etc.), but seems like a pretty GOAT era.

80s was the turning point in which the seeds of the destruction of all those things happened. Profit became everything, companies got bought out to sell off their assets, production moved overseas, people paid off, wages froze, etc. also obesity started increasing, values and entertainment got shallower, etc

The 80's were all about:

- Big hair and mullets
- Funky retro colors/ neons
- High waisted washed blue denim
- Reebok >>>> Nike by far
- No laws and no enforcements
- Lots of violence
- Hip Hop
- Corny love ballads and tunes
- No big brother. LOL at paper IDs for everything
- No computers
- Most technically advanced things we used were casio digital watches and calculators

Mirin'. I can remember the 90's well, but it looks like things already started in the 80's from what you described.

How do you compare the 90's vs the 80's?

I remember from the age of like 8 we would leave the house on our bikes in the morning and the only rule was be back before it was dark. And that was every kid on the block, parents didn't give a **** back then.

Same thing in school holidays, if both parents worked they would just leave the kids to do whatever, I assume its illegal now to leave a kid under 12 unattended all day

I was totally a child of the 80's. Really was the GOAT decade. Great movies, outdoors all the time, you had to talk to boyos and girlos, arcades were amazing. And you were treated like an adult much earlier. Most folks didn't go to college but they got jobs and moved out shortly after high school. Those of us that did go to college were still expected to work for our spending money, car insurance, car payments. None of this living with your parents until your late 20's nonsense.

Still a top 5 life moment for me was when me and my buddy installed a Kenwood stereo with a powered amplifier and Jenson 6x9s in my Nissan Sentra. Felt like a legit baller and would crank License to Ill everywhere I went.

As a pure Gen Xer I felt like the 80s belonged to the Boomers (back when Boomers was a specific cohort, not just any old or middle aged person like it is since 6 months ago). Having spent their youths as antiestablishment jobless protesting hippies, they hit their 30s and decided to get materialistic and rich, and a lot of the 80s reflected that.

90s was the Gen X decade culturally, and I felt much more at home.

100% this. As a 70's born child, the 80s were totally owned by boomers. I still loved it as a kid for most of it.
It was the "electronics age" as compared to the "internet age" from late 90's onwards.

Born in 78, grew up in the 80's.

Can confirm times were simple, we lived within our means and neighbors were neighborly. Cars were generally ugly, we would eat sleep and breathe sports. Playing outside was our therapy.

Can't forget thrash metal and Nintendo in '85. Fuk the 80s must have been a great time to live in.

I was born in the late 80s so I spent the entirety of my childhood in the 90s - pre internet. I severely miss what things were like in the 90s. I know I'm probably just getting old but I can't imagine being raised post 2000 with cellphones when you're 8 years old and all that.

Growing up in the 80s must have been a great experience.

Oldie checking in.

80's pros:
Women were thin. If an average-height woman was 140lbs, she was fat, and family often called them out for being fat.
Middle class was on fire.
People took actual pride in their country and what they did.
People were much, much friendlier.
The neon color craze was everywhere.
Gyms were amazing places, very social. It wasn't like you see today with everyone trying to mog each other and sitting on their cell phones.
Kids could go outside and play without worry.
Arcades and comic book stores were huge. Even introverts could make friends.

80's cons:
Free knowledge was not out there.
There was a lot of ignorance.
"Fun" things were very expensive.
Healthcare wasn't nearly as good.
Local governments could be ruthless. There was very little oversight back then.

The oldest Gen X'ers had our high school and college years completely in the 80's. When the 90's hit, grunge took over culturally (in late 1991, Nirvana blew up). Everyone was apathetic/depressed (or pretending to be apathetic/depressed), wearing flannel shirts and combat boots, and listening to chit music. I'm glad that I largely avoided the grunge years.

I do remember there was a retro thing happening in college in the late 80's. Lots of guys listening to the Dead while playing hackey sack on the quad. Other guys were buying those big old 60's/70's convertibles that were the size of boats.

yeah back in the day it seemed like the middle class was massive. kids had the basics. a bike, a gaming system, and bat/ball, friends, and outside.
