I have a high end dual cartridge mask thats got a 100 rating and removes paint ,aerosols etc, but it’s only rated at .3 micron , whereas the covid 19 virus is 120 nanometers .
A nanometer is 1000 times smaller than a micron , so not good news for the masks we have access to .

I can see where wearing masks may help a percentage if someone is coughing into one though , as the spray wouldn’t go as far .
Watching the news and this is looking gloomy as hell ,but I knew things weren’t getting back to normal anytime soon .
Let’s get that vaccine figured out ASAP

We do need to open things up.

But it needs to be done locally and slowly and carefully in stages. Does NYC need to open anything up this weekend? Likely not. Should it be illegal in rural Michigan to go to the nursery and buy mulch for your garden? Hell no!

The longer we go with a super hardcore lockdown, it not only hurts more in the immediate, but also, the more prone we will be to open too much up at once when we do.

This isn't a binary thing and shouldn't be treated like an on or off button. And the nation varies greatly across it in tons of ways so there is no one size fits all. The BIGGEST denominator that should be making a decision is each individual state. Though really, counties (and big cities) should be doing their own thing, within (wide) margins set by the governors, based on non binding guidance that comes from the feds/cdc

And May 1 should be thelatestdate we consider forsomeof the country opening upsome things. With precautions on distancing, gloves, hand sanitizing, face coverings if we want to go that route, but, there's too much shut down right now to keep going much longer across the board like this.

It was to flatten the curve. It's already been a month. Already, a full month behind us.

We don't need full capacity dine in restaurants yet. Or full capacity movie theaters. Or amusement parks. Or crowds of spectators at sportsball.

But we need to be able to go to Best Buy, to Home Depot, to Lowes, Walmart to buy coloring books (WTF that this is a thing that isn't allowed some places?!?!), etc...keep your distance, don't touch stuff you don't have to, wear PPE if you have it, etc

I like how everyone keep using the same idioms...flatten the curve, raise the line, stop the lockdown, open up...

So they open the country "gradually" and??? Doesnt matter if the entire country becomes corona free....it takes one infected person in an airport/on a plane and all hell breaks loose all over again...then what?start all over?

LOL, weren't you just arguing with me on doing this very thing? But yeah, this is pretty much my thought. Let state and local governments open up based on their how their communties are impacted, and restart the country.

...we are already at "it takes one infected person to ___" that's why 2,500 lab-confirmed people are dying in a single day. We aren't welding people into their houses and there are essential services etc so it's out there and spreading and it always was and was always going to be.It's simply a matter of scale

You do it gradually to avoid the obviously high risk activities (which might stay avoided for a very long time).

You do it gradually to judge just exactly what the impact is of the changes you make. The more you change at a time, the bigger the impact might be (duh) and the harder it is to ascertain precisely what change resulted in what effect. It's no different than not changing your workout routine and exercises and diet and sleep schedule all at once.

Itshouldbe clear we can't tell everybody "non essential" to stay home indefinitely (12 months, 18 months, 24 months? longer? While we wait for a vaccine) because society and economies as we know it would cease to exist. It's also clear that if we are going to hit to herd immunity before a vaccine, people are going to get infected, lots of them, so best we can do is space it out to...wait for it...flatten the curve and avoid overruning hospitals. What's a good method of avoiding too many sick at once? Don't put your foot to the floor and go WOT all at once on some magical date

This. Keep hospitals running light with not allowing non-essential surgery and let's get the k-8 kids back in elementary school so parents can work. Obv NOT in every city, but to treat phoenix/LA/Albuquerque the same as NY/Detroit is just plain retarded....

No no no no no, nobody is going back to school this semester.

School will be an entirely different matter that won't have to be decided in earnest till August.

If the kids go back and parents go in to work what happens with a lot of people is grandma/grandpa watch the kids after school, and the kids all spread it amongst themselves and then to every other person possible and you get a huge spike.

Most schools already declared and set plans for not going back this semester so that's done and staying.

Yeah it's a big factor in parents going to work but you know what, there's this thing called summer during which people figure it out. It is doable.

Also, there is a BIG THING here...school attendance is compulsory. Opening public school could only be done right now at this point if goign in person was optional and staying home to do distance/e-learning could not be used against you and even then the discrepancy in education, real and/or perceived, would just be another point of contention

I agree with all this. All of it bud. Lets get it going, ****. The mental health is a serious thing. I was in great mental health 4 weeks ago. Maybe it speaks about my personality but I seriously am losing it a couple of times a day. Hell I went to the store for gas at 2pm today to do huge shopping tomorrow early and this girl cut in front of me because I was practicing 6 feet and I lost my shiet on her. Not something I would ever do before, I would let it go.

Our modern society and economy as we know it would cease to exist if we kept stay at home lockdown orders until we got a vaccine. That is self explanatory. If you don't believe it then don't believe it IDGAF

I can tell my wife is definitely taking a beating mentally. She's been home with our 3 kids every day for a month now. No leaving the house at all unless it's for curb side grocery pickup or walk around the block. She HAS to get out and do something soon. I've been lucky that I can still go to work every day and interact with other people.

Anyone who thinks these shut downs are feasible for extended periods of time is dead wrong for so many reasons.
We HAVE to get things back open - and for more reasons than just the sake of our economy.

Survival. When the jungle tears itself down and builds itself into something new. Guys like you and me, we end up dead. Doesn’t really mean anything. Or, if we happen to live through it, well that doesn’t mean anything either.

I had a regime for every day before this. I worked 7AM-11PM 5 days a week, 1145-12 Saturdays, with gym thrown in there 2-3 days a week. Sunday was family time. Now it's wake up at 8am with our daughter and watch her til wife wakes up, eat breakfast, watch TV for a while. Yard work if I can or try and go for a run in our packed neighborhood. Rest of it is 24/7 with my wife and 6 month old. I love them to death but the extremes of both schedules is hard to cope with.

It's interesting, there are people who think you can just declare a whole bunch of the country can't work for a year or two, but they'll be fine...I mean it's not like the economy needs businesses to be open or people to have jobs...

what is with the media’s agenda now of doomsday scenarios? everyday a new article of “social distancing may be necessary until 2053”. I get it it’s the media but numbers don’t lie. unless I’m missing something.

case are dropping now. deaths may be rising but that’s not exactly an indicator of the virus spreading. i

and what happens if you send everyone back out there without adequate testing?

boom, virus spreads like wild fire again,

then back to lock down

Feels like theirs an ideal middle point we are not hitting on the curve, that we need to hit. We may have lowered infections, but look at the economy. Jesus Christ. It's like bragging you get the best gas mileage of anybody you know, turns out it's because you drive 40 mph on the freeway. That's not ideal. We could lower traffic fatalities if speed limits across the board were reduced 10 mph. Drunk driving deaths can be *eliminated* if we equipped each and every car with an ignition interlock. But we don't do these things. It's a trade-off were willing to make sacrificing some for the benefit of all. I think we're on the downslope for new cases already, and on our way to hitting total peak cases, but it's definitely something we should be thinking about next time with super flu or whatever. Unfortunately this requires a great deal of foresight and quick reaction, maybe come up with models of various R0 values and how high the curve should be limited to. Factor in mortality rates, who's vulnerable etc, to have a working model for many scenarios. Ebola=total fukking lockdown, board up the houses and pray that chit away. Slightly deadlier/contagious flu=vulnerable people stay home, everyone else be careful.
Virtue is its own reward.

I'm not sure what business you are in, but my last day worked was March 19th. In Pigeon Forge, we was at full capacity on two sections, which seats about 200 people. We were there for the entire night. Now, there is noway to know the actual estimate in the area at the time, but we still have never had a "peak", or look like we will ever have one. So as long as they open us up, and travel for the most part is cut off, we can gauge where we land in a month.I would say if we see any kind of spike that shouldn't be there we will shut back down, Trump even actually admitted it yesterday that it's a real possibility County's might open and shut down multiple times. As of right now the County has had 22 cases total, and 18 recover, with zero deaths. There are hundreds and maybe thousands of County's like this.

Start using some common sense when you post, Farley made me maybe I can you.

End the shutdowns now information website

https://endtheshutdownnow.com/

I was wrong to push so hard for these shutdowns myself. I expected the impact on health care to be far worse than it actually is, but I was placing my trust in those experts who have the professional expertise to model pandemics and publicize those models.

The impact of the virus on health care has been minimal relative to the impact of shutdowns on the working and business-owning American people which has been immense and growing more immense by the day.

The forecasts of the dangerous overburdening of healthcare, even with full social distancing, were grossly over-forecast and have been disproven and discredited.

Tens of millions of Americans have been put out of work and there are nearly 20 million new unemployment claims over the past three weeks, all because of badly wrong forecasts of overburdening of health care.

For most of the country, there is no rational justification to continue the shutdowns of businesses and employees past the end of April.

Putting people back to work during the first of May will cause more viral transmission than if we don't - that's a given - but at this point we have to accept that outcome and that cost. If there are outbreaks that get far too severe into May and June, then we'll just have to readjust at that point; but for now the people have to be allowed to get back to work sooner rather than later.

There is no easy and perfect answer, but that's the best answer there is right now.

I have the mask my mom bought for the Ebola outbreak she got that never happened and swore it would. It's weird how shiet like that happens. She freaked out about h1n1 and ebola bad, and not this one, and look at what happened. If she keeps testing her amount of covid19 test a day and gets paid for it from the government like her boss is hoping, shes set to net them +5million over her usually 1.5-1.9m. Life is SUPER weird man. She sent me a pic of her gear the other day and it's just surreal. It's the entire outfit with the big ass face shield with the mask to boot. She would have laughed at it in February.

Reopening could work if we put travel ban between states and/or metro areas (essential work travel only). Face covering when out in public. Staggered school and work schedules. School and businesses lower the room capacity to allow for people to work/study a safe distance from each other. Restaurant and Salons capacity also lowered. No international travels unless immune (requires antibody testing) until there is a vaccine and enough have had it.

Can’t think of a way to keep movie theaters, night clubs, sporting events and concerts going until this is over though. Unless they seat everyone 6’ apart at theaters (some dine in theaters already do this), sporting events and concerts.

Employ people to mass test and contact trace. Set up a queue for elective surgeries to allow more capacity in case of a surge.
They said she's gone too far this time

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just lost my aunt to this last night. Srs.

My uncle, who is one of the best people I've ever known, also has it and it isn't looking good for him either.

She was 68 and healthy. He's 73 and not in good health.

He's bed-ridden and it's believed that they both contracted it from his private duty nurse, despite taking precautions.

Chit hit me hard brahs. You don't think this stuff is going to affect you or your family but it definitely can, and probably will. Stay safe.
