By rent recomp, are you talking about deposit protection?

If you're not aware, the landlord is legally obliged to use a deposit protection scheme to handle your deposit.
If they at any point don't i.e. even if he tries to now set it up and put it in retrospectively, you can sue him for up to 5 times the value of the deposit. Might be worth your broke mate considering for some extra cash to live on while getting a job is impossible.
