Dude if you're repeatedly making big cash deposits at the bank ("Structuring") - you're going to attract unwanted attention and likely start getting SARs (they don't have to be 10k deposits) on you. That's another plot hole in your story and if, by chance, you are telling the truth then you are really opening yourself up to getting fisted by the IRS or other law enforcement.

This is 100% true, banks are pretty much obliged to report suspicious transaction however little they may be.

It's the FBI that investigates SARs. Banks use sophisticated algorithms that will figure out over time if you're trying to avoid a CTR.

The IRS can seize the money though, simply if they suspect something.

At any rate - if he's regularly depositing several hundred+ dollars daily without having an actual legitimate business...people will eventually start to take notice.

Going to try to use logic to figure it out.

If he were a hardcore hustler he would have better guns and have bigger enemies. He has the same kind of pussy crap that I could get my hands on and take to a gun range, and I'm actually a student. So he must be low time (explains the fact that he living just over 100k a year, if you can believe him) which leaves corner drugs, corner sex, or something like tax fraud or low-end theft. We can eliminate tax fraud because if bolobrah could hide money from the IRS he wouldn't be depositing all his money in a bank. I'm going to say it's a combination of drug/sex, because bolobrah isn't smart enough to pull off heists and not get caught. He'd be in jail right now. Not sure what kind of drugs, maybe *******/pot/heroin, and as for sex I doubt he could be a pimp, probably sells his own body under a bridge or jerks off online where no one can see his face or height.

Given all this I'm not sure how he would qualify for a loan at a bank given that he probably doesn't even file taxes on any of this income... so wouldn't keeping in a bank bring him significant problems? Don't criminals keep their money in places the IRS won't immediately look? Poor bolobrah, at least there's always renting, I'm sure that you could find some chitty landlord in a bad neighborhood who would overlook your lack of legitimate income and let you move into the building.

Definitely. All of the BSA stuff mandates they do anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing searches, and they look at all kinds of scenarios based on aggregate deposits. They end up catching a bunch of people evading taxes. Banks risk huge fines if they don't file SARs. You're right about them noticing...only a matter of time before a scenario like that would be investigated.

^^^thus is true for large sums of money (ie not pocket change like what op is posting)

I worked in aml and proceeds of crime for a few years.

You know how the bottom feeder guys got busted?

Posing on the ‘gram with mid-tier sportscars or sports-prestige (amg, m-series etc) with no plausible way of explaining it. Their competitors or downstream customers often sobbed them in.

Many jurisdictions have an unexplained wealth law which puts the onus on the suspect to explain where they got the money. Cops don’t even have to prove an underlying criminal enterprise. They just impound your chit.
