I use to be great at mental math like that, borderline human calculator. I think it has finally started to diminish somewhat though.

Depends on the numbers. big ones like that with lots of zeros just remove them and do 155x3 (150x3=450+15=465)and add them back in.
Percentages I can do rough estimates on a significant portion of numbers, but down to exact I don't typically bother. 55% of 135,000 I'd say 70,000 and some change and call it a day. I consider myself fairly smart, but I admit my math skills are nothing great. Better at science/retaining info that isn't numeric.

Multiplying larger numbers with higher complexity requires three facets of intelligence: memorization (yes, memory is part of IQ, unfortunately) - you have to be able to hold the numbers in your head, the ability to innovate and find shortcuts to performing the calculations (e.g. 36*36 can be seen as 40*36 - 4*36, or it can be seen as 900+180*2+36, second is faster IMO).


doing something like 436*723 within 30 seconds with only have gone through high school math and not really practiced methods to do so is a sign of genius. doing 436-723 by practicing it for a long time so you can do parlour tricks doesn't make you intelligent.

I can do math in my head pretty easily. There's a trick to it.

Using your example, 1550 x 300, you break it up into two parts: 1500 x 300 + 50 x 300. 1500 x 300 is 15 x 3 x 10000, which is 45 x 10000 which is 450000. Then, 50 x 300 is 5 x 3 x 1000, which is 15000. So 450000 + 15000 = 465000. Solved it in about 10 seconds in my head

Should have mentioned it was an open problem, my bad. Yes don't waste your time, it's been experimentally verified past at least 2^60. No one will be answering that problem. This is one facet I like about math, it is the goat humbler.

For everyone who thinks they are naturally good at math or test well in math (I don't really include the OP calculation problems in what is called math, it's mere calculation), just a cursory glance at, say, a list of past years' Putnam exam questions or the various problems on math stackexhange/math overlow will be a quick dose of humble pie. A very quick one. I've studied math for years, but I'm in the same boat: there are always people out there solving problems that you or I can't, who have greater ability in the subject, orders of magnitude greater.I just don't attach much value to it, more in a general sense....especially regarding the higher side of the spectrum. Im much more impressed with people who make original contributions to things like science and math vs doing well in IQ testing. Im wary in general of people who

-Have to come out and say they have higher than average intelligence.
-Ramble on about IQ or who say they have high IQ
-Are obssesed with the different forms of intelligence and personality types, especially anything related to online testing.
-Talk about the Dunning Kruger effect or other terms from psychology.

I wonder what would happen if the people who love totalk aboutintelligence actually put more effort into solving problems....for example when problem/puzzle threads come up on the misc at times- where are all those people? Seem to be absent a lot, and makes you wonder.

It's not #math on dalnet, the only place I have ever seriously participated in a math community online. And I stopped that back in 2004 or so. What would be the point in coming to the Misc part of a bodybuilding forum that is almost singularly dedicated to chit posting to have a real discussion about the beauty that can be seen even through a basic-intermediate grasp of mathematics? And despite my qualifications I can honestly say there were some very, very 'sharp minded' people on #math, able to nudge anyone who struggled with a problem to "Consider: " and help them solve it that way. Not solve the problems for them outright - defeating the whole purpose of those tests. Some were TAs at top universities who had sympathy for those who couldn't 'get it'. And that's where you have that kind of conversation - not here. You get a lot more out of it in that kind of environment. Or, at least I did.

Thats not intelligent, thats smart.
