could be because they think you want a quiet room away from the elevator (where all the commotion is going on at all hours)

Why don't they allow this?
revenue managers determine the price of the room as they see fit based on supply and demand , the General manager of the hotel or even a lower manager if given authority can override the set rates but the higher ups will know about it and will need a good reason to justify lowering a rate.

typically on low demand nights, the revenue manager will lower the rates significantly , because they'd rather get something than nothing, but there is a limit on how low they will go based on if it's a low scale, mid-scale, or high scale brand. They don't want the brand reputation to be tarnished by going too low on the rate. For example, a luxury hotel like 4 seasons is not gonna drop their rate to the public to 50/night because you'll attract all types of unsavory people that will cause issues in the hotel. Best believe the regular high end clientele will notice the trash plebs running amok , a bad look...

When I travel for business, they always put me near the lift. I've always appreciated this since I am always out partying hard on business and it's hard to stumble back to your room after going hard into dawn with a random LOL.

Yeah, this is definitely the way. When I travel with my partner, we usually get a quieter corner room, or suite. These are usually on the corner, si it could be having status with the hotel that makes this possible.

well to my knowledge. hotel staff is not even supposed to ask anything that can be construed as asking for service proof, in the first place , as it's not legal to ask, according to ADA laws

idk man, that's a great point that you brought up, another guest or even staff getting injured from a dog, service or not service , most GMs would have to call the corporate legal team on what to do, very good question.

I went to college for hotel management, wanted to get experience in different departments and didn't want to wait years for a higher position at one hotel, so I "gave myself" promotions by applying a step up elsewhere. Depending on where/who you work for, you can get stuck waiting a long time for opportunities to go to horizontal or vertical, or never go anywhere at all... OR you will be on the fast track for growth. It's up to you to recognize when to stay and when to go. Hotels are always hiring ( well not now due to covid19)

Pay is typically relatively low for entry level positions ( anywhere from 8 to 12 an hour ) compared to other industries. Non-mgmt supervisors make between 12 to 16 hr . salaried mgmt ranges from 35k to 60k on average . This NOT a high paying industry for the most part especially with the grind and stress involved. I was lucky enough to get unlimited hourly OT at one job, and a very generous salary at another. That being said, I had to deal with constant job related BS and stress outside of work that was slowly killing me. I am transitioning to another field.

Lol, your acquaintance has it good. A lot of maintenance guys have a decent amount downtime but are kept busy with at least PMs, ( preventative maintenance) in the guest rooms.

yea, we try to capture as much as we can from their CC on file

but...people that pull shenanigans..most of the time, their CC is almost ( like 5 bucks left ) or maxed out/closed by check-out time . and we're SOL. Gotta take the L to the chin and ban them to avoid further future losses.

1. never worked in a luxury hotel, so I will give just my humble opinion/guess. at high end hotels, the hookers/escorts are probably dressed "sexy" but "classy" not like a trashy street/back pages h0e. Because that's what their high-end johns expect/pay for and they don't want to compel the hotel staff to call the cops. If the hookers keep it under the radar/quiet, the hotel will gladly take their money on a regular basis. Recurring business is easy money.

2. The blocking is a mix a wanting to separate work/personal life and playa hating. Technically mgmt cannot stop/regulate you from meeting a guest outside of work as long as you are off the clock/off duty and as long as you aren't wearing your uniform or have any work related logos on. But they can regulate fraternizing with guests on the job ( which would get the ball rolling on meeting them outside of work). Honestly, staff can get away with alot of stuff, mgmt cannot see/hear/ be there all the time. You can easily pull numbers without mgmt knowing. I think people snitch cuz they're just hating. They want want the other person wants and can't stand to see it. Crabs in a bucket mentality.

Most likely, especially if staff sees you meeting them in the lobby . They can tell by what the ladies are wearing and your whole interaction vibe with the hookers.

If you sneak em in the side entrances , yall can be seen on camera , and they'll know as well.

you don't need to, nor will staff really ask about your visitors. Staff will only call you out if you have too many people in your room and your being loud/disruptive to other guests.

I've worked at an "economy" aka cheap motel ( think motel 6, super 8, sleep inn) but mostly as mid scale hotels , like Hilton and Marriott mid-scale brands. To answer your q: I'll give an example. Yes employees can book a more premium room at another hotel of the same brand and/or management company using their employee discount rate. A Marriott employee who works at let's say a mid tier SpringHill Suites, they can book a premium suite at a luxury JW Marriott or a Ritz Carlton with their employee rate . Provided that those hotels are offering that rate for the nights desired.

Yes, if you're not the GM, just be straight to the point but cordial , no explanation needed outside of ,"you are not allowed to check in per mgmt". if they press the issue further, you can grab the GM or another manager/super to politely tell them to gtfo . If no manager is there, and they wanna whine about it, just give them the manager's business card or the corporate number if they really wanna cry about it. if they STILL won't stfu and leave after all of that. Kindly tell them , you will call the police if they do not leave immediately.

There should be a list of DNR people on a paper and/or on a doc in the computer. If someone is so bad they that are " call popo on site" that list should be posted in plain view at the desk at all times ( but not in eyeshot of guests/non employees) . Typically that list would come with screen shot pics of the person from security cam footage.

If the guest has been at your property before, they should already have a guest profile on the computer system. If the you and your co workers have been diligent in your duties , anything notable should have been typed in from previous stays. So yes, notes are taken, good, bad or neutral, if people do their job the right way. Of course you'll employees who dgaf and fail to do so.

I worked valet in college for a higher end hotel so not a whole lot of riffraff valeting their vehicle for $35 a night... was glad we just chilled out front parking cars and **** while the hotel had to deal with everyone... whether they valet'd their vehicle, had a room or not. The hotel was right near the convention center and it seemed like every weekend there was some stupid ****ing conference going on... it got to the point where I would request off months ahead if I knew a ****ty group was coming in for a convention that was SUPER needy and didn't tip.

if actual bed bugs or anything looking like one are found by a guest and/or staff, SOP is to call Ecolab or some other pest control co. right away so they can be the ones to confirm it really is a BB and treat the room and adjacent rooms immediately.

other than that, depending on the hotel, a pest control. co. will send a tech do preventative spraying for vacant guest rooms and other areas ; on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis

True bro. Tons of dudes around here in their 30s still working in entry level positions in hotels.

Back then in 80s when tourism was new to Turkey they built chitloads of hotels but there were so little people to employ. My dad started in reception as a 18 yo and was already a front desk manager at 25. Now if you are a shift leader at 30 should consider yourself lucky.

I plan to get electronics degree in a correspondence school and continue as a technician. Always envied technical service guys, when I had to stand up 24/7 in a reception like a penis, take reservations thru phone and always deal with stupid issues of guests technical service guys were watching games on tv, change a couple light bulbs and call it a day.

i swear they always put me close ish to the elevators. not that i hotel often (airbnb = goatbnb), but wat does that mean. i'm not loudexcept when i pound sloots but that's not often and i dont think i give that vibe. mad/10

I plan to get electronics degree in a correspondence school and continue as a technician. Always envied technical service guys, when I had to stand up 24/7 in a reception like a penis, take reservations thru phone and always deal with stupid issues of guests technical service guys were watching games on tv, change a couple light bulbs and call it a day.
good for your dad, if you start early enough in your teens, early 20s, you can easily make your way to some type of manager by your mid to late 20s. provided that you're a good employee that takes initiative, just basically don't be a crappy worker.
