Being someone who has hooker friends, I can tell you it has a lot to do with girls who come from really bad backgrounds and are not able to "go legit." They usually lack the credit to get a bank account (have bad credit already), may not even have an ID card, and in some cases even have outstanding warrants for their arrest (from previous prostitution charges that they never appeared for.)

It is that same reason that so many of them fall for getting a pimp. They are not exceptionally intelligent, grew up around drug abuse / etc, and don;t have many of the essentials that we take for granted.
