Yeah Pilsner Urquell is usually pretty easy to find. It’s the very first pilsner and the brewery has been around since 1842. The key is to find it fresh, in cans, and refrigerated. Or make the trip to Pilzn for true unpasteurized pilsner nirvana.

German wheat beers are pretty much all I drink beer wise, I hate hoppy sh#t and know they’re at the lowest end of the IBU scale. Weihenstephaner Vitus, Weihenstephaner Weissbier, and Schneider Tap 7 are my faves, can you recommend me something new?

Lots of pine/resin IPA fans in here. Had my run of those several years back, before Stone changed Ruination. I prefer the tropical profiles more now. Go to’s are Parrish Ghost in the Machine and Envie. Others I like are Cigar City Jai Alai and for best classic style goes to Bells 2 Hearted. 1st IPA I’ve ever liked was east coast style DFH 90 min. One of very few quality IPA’s distributed back then. PTE and Heady Topper are over rated. Hop JuJu beats them both. We just got Maine Brewing in Houston and haven’t had Lunch yet but I have had a few good IPA’s from them. My favorite style probably goes to Trappist Ales with Rochefort 10 leading the pack. Had a Westy 12 6pk, back when EBay sold beer as collector bottles, it was good but over rated as well. My favorite American brewery is Avery. OG Kaiser, Tweak, Demon Series and my personal favorite Uncle Jacob’s stout leads the way.

I’m finally thankful to see the farmhouse and sour/lambic style craze trending down. Jester King is suppose to be bringing back OG Black Metal. Solid stout it is.

Not really a fan of lighter style beers but who cares. Drink what you like and to hell with what others think.

What I got really into last summer is a really nicely brewed slightly hopped craft pilsner. Having a few of those in the sun is great. I brewed a Vienna lager a little while back, modelled after Sam Adam's Boston Lager, and it was a great summer beer.

Pretty interesting how much of a general pain it is to brew a lager vs an ale considering the fact that the lager is the more abused and 'boring' style of beer. Every macro brewery has essentially turned the lager style into a gimmick.
*Look at reflection in car window and flex every time crew*
*Use half the roll to wipe after a poo crew*
*Fart in the gym and blame rotten smell on faulty ventilation crew*
*Fart at home and blame it on the dog crew*
*Watch neutron-star density poop mock me as water flushes around it and it stays put crew*
*Drive 2 minutes in the summer and back of shirt gets completely wet crew*
*Coffee black as midnight on a moonless night crew*
*Fat shame my cat on a daily basis crew*

If you haven’t tried Ayinger I would definitely recommend that. It’s my favourite hefeweizen. They make a weizenbock like vitus as well.

If you’re in Texas I highly recommend checking out Live Oak brewing if you haven’t already. They make outstanding beer. Also, Pierre Celis’ (the originator of Hoegaarden and saved the witbier style from going extinct) daughter opened up a brewery in Texas called Celis brewery I would check that out too.

That founder's beer is sublime. I've been lucky enough to get my hands on a few bottles of Canadian Breakfast stout every year and by god that is a great beer. I aged one a few years - help my fuk.

Yeah I prefer full beers too, but my abs don't lol.

Lately I've been drinking Lagunitas Daytime IPA - check it out. 98 calories, 4%, and actually tastes decent. Heads and tails above Coors, Bud, Miller etc.

When you sip a beer are you able to pick out intricate flavors? Like hints of cherry, sht like that?

Would you say you have an above average sense of smell or taste?

There’s too many to list lol Hill Farmstead is a standout. Since i’m on a lager kick I really like what Notch brewery is doing in Salem.

Definitely. For the Cicerone exam there’s a tasting portion that tests your ability to detect and identify off flavours, style discrimination, and a beer acceptance section where you’re given a beer and have to determine if the beer is good enough to serve and if not why. I wouldn’t say I naturally have an above average sense of smell or taste it’s something anyone can do with practice and build over time. Drinking beer and tasting beer are two different exercises. Next time you have a beer google image search a beer flavour wheel and see what aromas and flavours you can detect.

Since traveling to Bamberg I've been about smoked beers. Only one I can find periodically in the states is schlenkerla.

Yeah we only get Schlenkerla in Ontario as well. Cicerone just covered Rauchbier yesterday in their taste along series with master cicerone Pat Fahey.

What's the deal with micro-breweries and IPA? So many will have 75-90% of their beers as IPA and usually they are awful. Is it just demand from the hipster crowd, or because it's an easy beer to brew?

both. relatively easy to brew and its what the market is demanding. if you're in NE then you brew a DIPA and stick it in a 16oz can with a label.

Honestly the only IPA I've ever truly enjoyed was brewed by Smuttynose out of New Hampshire. It was called "Big A" and I could drink them all day. One of the brewers there told me they re-introduced the wort toward the end of the process to cut some of the bitterness without losing the flavor. They stopped brewing it after a couple of years. I can only assume it wasn't popular enough locally.
