Way too many of you have fallen for Yankee revisionist history. I would expect that elsewhere on the web where all the sheeple congregate in their echo chambers, but not here.

The statue was put up in the 1880s by children of Confederate soldiers to commemorate the dead. This wasn’t one of those confederate statues built in the 60s during the civil rights movement.

10% of southerners actually owned slaves. Since they were mostly older they were less likely to have fought and were also likely affluent enough to keep their sons out of the war. So likely less than 10% of Confederate soldiers were slave owners. Regardless of the role slavery played in the bigger picture, the individual confederate soldiers were fighting to protect their homes rather than to protect slavery.

Maybe it’s because I’m in the military, but I don’t think any memorials to dead soldiers should be torn down just because the country they fought for is viewed distastefully now. There are gravestones in the US for German POWs who died here that have swastikas on them. That is the flag they fought and died under, so I see nothing wrong with the symbol being on their memorials. You don’t have to agree with their cause, but confederate soldiers fought and died in war. In my opinion, attempting to erase history like this because you disagree with it makes you no better than Nazi book-burners.

But anyways, here’s another pic I took of the other side of the statue a few hours ago:

Lol at the “fuk amerikka” where they forgot the third K.
And relief washes over me in an awesome wave

What really makes me angry are how those dumb fuks just sit on top of the statue dumbfounded, and staring at him. No one checked to see if the area was clear first either. I hope they get punished for their negligence. Especially the person pulling the rope, and the retarded fuk who pushed the statue. Fuk that guy for just staring in shock. Yes, of course. If the arsonist didnt mean to die and left by themselves his wife and 2 kids, for sure id feel bad. Thats kind of an odd question, i really dont see how anyone can be like "ok, good, good he died" in these type of situations.

Maybe we do deserve all this crap that is happening this year after all.

Especially as the situation played itself out and he chose to remain standing underneath the ropes pulling on the statue.

It was an accident for sure, but not a mistake. At any point, him making a better decision would have kept him alive

Anyway, thats besides the point. He made a bad choice, but didnt deserve to die, let alone be laughed at for dying. We all have made bad choices in the past, that doesnt mean you deserve to die because of it. Being in the middle of a riot yelling and wrecking **** is not a death-deserving 'bad choice'. Its just a freak accident and poor judgement.

Im not surprised either that im arguing against people for being glad he died, since this is the misc after all.

You're right, its not ok to laugh at him for dying or being brain dead, but he certainly deserves less sympathy than a man dying on his way to work, for example.

Well, yeah, dont see how thats relevant though. Guess i should have said in my first post "Im sad he died, but id be more sad about a man dying on his way to work"...

The point is that IMO this is not a laughing matter, yet some people are chuckling and smirking at the situation. For a second though i guess i forgot i was on the misc so yeah lets all carry on lol

Your arsonist example is a bad one. An arsonist very easily has the ability to cause tons of destruction and kill many people depending on their target. So I am happy when an arsonist accidentally offs himself.

When you disagree with the rioting and destroying of public property, its easy to laugh at the misfortune of those taking place. But yes, you are correct, it is in poor taste to laugh at his misfortune.

to be fair, many of the men who fought in the war were NOT slave owners or fought to have slaves. In fact, even Robert E Lee himself was offered by Lincoln to lead the Union army but refused because his loyalty was to the state of virginia.

The vast majority of the men who fought for tue confederacy fought over their loyalty to their state. Back then, people had patriotism for their state every bit as much as for the country as a whole.

To people in the south, these statues represent men who risked their lives for their state. Its about pride. Now I do understand why black americans would not appreciate them but its also from a skewed viewpoint and is solely looked at from the slavery aspect. If we were to remove statues of every person who ever owned or condoned slavery then you would have to remove every single statue on earth of someone from before the 19th century. Its silly.

If there can be a Karl Marx statue in this country then there can be statues of people from our own past, as far as im concerned. The better way to deal with this would be to put up statues nearby of people who fought slavery

And you think the North was fighting to free black people? At the most high strategic level yes they were...but the soldiers? Most did not care about black people. In progressive noble NYC there was so much anger over the draft that they rioted, destroyed much of the city, hung and murdered a dozen free black men, and burned down a black orphanage (luckily the kids got out in time). Many of the nativist americans there did not want to risk their lives for lowly black men. Racism continued to abound in NYC and Boston after the war. Should we destroy all union statues as well?

People will antagonize all confederates as fighting to keep slaves and uphold the north as liberators of black Americans....but the truth is a little more ugly and nuanced.

Doesn't really matter. The south wanted to secede so that they could continue to have slaves. The confederate soldiers were fighting for that right. It's really ****ed up that their soldiers are honored for that.

Guess you didn’t read the post you quoted

They weren’t fighting to “keep slaves”. They didn’t own slaves. A good amount likely didn’t even know a slave. They were fighting because they were loyal to their states and their states declared war.

You telling me the average god fearing southerner that dropped out of school at 10 to work the family farm and is illiterate had a nuanced understanding of the ramifications of the civil war, let alone an opinion on race? To the higher ups it was about money and slavery, to the average soldier it was about loyalty and southern pride.

They were still fighting for the right for their state to have slaves, even if they didn't have any themselves. They thought slavery was okay and thus were fighting for it. They shouldn't be celebrated by having statues. Not to mention they are traitors for wanting to leave the country

"Doesn't matter" isn't a logical argument.

There's a statue on prospect park nyc that celebrates the union soldier - considering nyc rioted and killed blacks over fighting in the war - we should take this down. Additonally there is a statue of General Grant in nyc too - General Grant issued general order 11 that expelled Jews from his warzone (he thought they were a corrupting presence and participated in smuggling and other crimes). it's really ****ed up that he is honored for that. NYC is home to the most jews of any city in the world - we should get rid of that statue too by your logic.

Sure, remove Grant statue. But why should we honor traitors like confederate soldiers? They represent slavery and being traitors. Besides, I thought you right-wingers were against trophies for second place?

But seriously, how would you feel if there was a group that wanted to make it legal to rape, kill and enslave white people and then people who fought for their right to do so were given statues? Id find it pretty fuked up

Can confirm, I live in one of those two nice neighborhoods. Definitely hard to tell where my property tax money is going.

For all the schitty aspects of Portsmouth, I do really like Olde Towne and the waterfront. It’s a damn shame this had to happen there.
And relief washes over me in an awesome wave

Like the romans then? I think we should keep those statues (even though they raped and enslaved many white people).

America lost the Vietnam war and I think we should still have statues honoring those who served in it. they aren't trophies you imbecile.

By that logic we should remove all mosques as well since Mohammed owned slaves
