Just like I think police should have associates or bachelor's degrees. You cant fill positions with the current pay in many places and have that requirement. I think police administration needs a VERY hard looking at because thats where I see most problems in policing.

I also think just because many officers will never fire their pistol at a person in their career, does not mean we should take their pistols away from them.

Just because a department may not use their militarized gear for the vast majority of situations, doesnt mean we should take that away from them. The one or two or more instances they NEED that equipment, and dont have it, is one too many because that devalues those officers lives and the safety and security of the public.
yep agreed

I'm not for defunding BTW

It would probably need to be trained 2-3 times a week and after maybe 6months -1 year the cop could be pretty proficient (in comparison to your average Joe), (it would also cut down on lard ass cops as training bjj 3x a week with rolling would leave you in pretty decent shape).

One major issue I see is the high likelihood of injury. I'm not saying bjj is a "brutal" sport by any means but it is quite vigorous and if you take out of shape 30-40 year olds and have them training regularly, odds are quite a few are going to receive injuries which leave them unfit to work whether it be for a few days or potentially a year in the case of a knee ligament injury. If you were to water down bjj and limit the live sparring, although it would drastically reduce injury risk it probably wouldn't be as effective.

It could potentially work if it was implemented with all rookie cops as they're less likely to get injured while young and fit.
Oh definitely! I used to do MMA training and you can certainly get injured. The Army has a lot of base grappling training. I think it could be done in a safe manner but yea you don't wanna be out of commission for six weeks over a damn broken rib.

I didn't know what it meant either until i looked it up. Defund is different from disband.

"In 2017, when a shortage of inpatient psychiatric beds in Dallas was driving up the number of 911 calls, overwhelming emergency rooms and crowding jails with mentally ill people, the city decided to try something different.

It put an officer, a paramedic and a social worker in every car responding to mental health calls in the city’s troubled south-central region, an attempt to get people the help they needed without an arrest or violent confrontation. The pilot program, RIGHT Care, led to a drop in arrests in the area.

Good thread. I have serious trust issues with the Police, but it's good to see things from their side as well.

I know its different, but other cities are disbanding. If you defund, then you have to also give the police less responsibility and put those funds to good use. Not just take it away and not change anything. Right now they are the first line of support for everything. They wear too many hats right now it muddies the water. The example you give is perfect. If you are going to have a cop play the role of peace office, paramedic, and social worker. then the should have the required training and schooling and be certified in all three and give them the salary of all three combined.

if you disband, you still need to come up with the same solution, or else nothing will change.

The police are not the problem.

Probably the realest shiet i read in awhile, and thats why im not supporting black lives matter not because im racist but because it empowers groups like antifa and yes ill say it black political organizations that have views i dont agree with. They dont want equality they already have that, they want superiority apparently even if their delusional "im a victim" asses wont or cant admit it. Its hypocritical they single white people or cops out, its sterotyping which i thought they were trying to fight against? Oh yeah its ok to sterotype and guilt trip white ppl for acts committed to black people they had no control over and have ppl apoligizing for someone just because they are white too. Thats racist, i never owned any slaves so fuk u.. spreading covid with your privileged asses.

They incite a completely irrational fear in children from a young age that police are racist and will brutalize you because of your race. Lets not consider the single digit amount of incidents of this happening a year, better to make it sound like cops are blasting every PoC who looks at them funny.
I have always told my children that the police are not your friends.

They are only there to harm you either physically, financially or by taking your freedom.

Never ever talk to them not even to say Hello as you walk past them.

you dont drastically defund already short police departments to fix any problem.

You are talking about adding more resources(trained humans) to 911 calls. Why does that mean you need to take money away from police? Like no chit adding 2 more qualified professionals to calls will help, but thats not taking into consideration the consequences of removing 200 police officers from a department who is already 200 officers short of fully staffed.

THAT has also been experimented with and shown to greatly effect minority communities NEGATIVELY with increased homicide, robbery, burglary, gang violence, thefts, vandalism, etc....

This is what (rhetorically) I don't get. If racism and bias is the problem, then why is having no police worse?

Well maybe if all you had to drive to was real legit police calls, and not other types, maybe your life would be easier; i am not talking about money now.

There have been cities that disbanded and then overhauled the entire department to start over with all new people and policies.

It's worked well for most of them.

Also the manner in which a person is apprehended matters a lot, not just the crime. A mass shooter who lays down his gun and puts his hands up when police arrives is less likely to be shot than a man holding a knife 10 feet from a cop refusing to put it down and then takes a step forward, or a person hitting a police officer repeatedly and grabbing at his gun on his waistbelt.
I'd agree but the technology isnt there yet and the additional battery packs and data storage amounts to be in the millions for even medium sized agencies. I formed BWC and in car here. Monumental task and astronomical cost. If they want reform, the federal governement should pay for all associated costs and monitor the rfp forthe projects. It'd be a good start

No not without penalty. I have seen performance reviews that drive some "productivity" stats up. They tried it here and it busted rather quickly. The notion that any influence on an officer's arrest decision is illegal and payouts come to all different parties in the event they try it. Its just not a thing and by making it profitable for officers to tell on the agency. It may have been a past practie but there are tangible consequences to it. Not saying that it couldnt happen but we all get gitty hoping a supervisor tries it. $$$$$$$

Strong logic, its proven to be illegal and have consequence. Any department not wanting to pay out millions in revenue is foolish. These are the precednet setting cases and the example of the rest of the nation to follow. If it satill happens and im sure it does in some places, especially smaller agencies, it is the exception to the rule and against the law.

This is what good cops realize. A lot of people are out protesting, but the MAJORITY of people arent. The majority of people still want law and order and want to feel safe. The protestors dont want us here, but just because good people are being silent, doesnt mean we abandon them.

Unfortunately the protestors voices are all that is being heard by politicians making decisions and its greatly limiting what we as police officers can do to serve the community right now.

Most of us police saw this coming, and we can also tell you this is no where near as bad as its going to get if this movement keeps up.

There was an article I read the other day about Camden NJ having a much improved situation.

What are you talking about.

The police can't protect you. Them stopping someone from hurting you would be the equivalent of winning the powerball.

It takes a few seconds to kill you. By the time the police get to your 911 call they will just be there to process your body or take your statement.

The notion that anyone can have their door kicked in and call 911 and be saved is fantastical.

It takes a few seconds to kill you. By the time the police get to your 911 call they will just be there to process your body or take your statement.

The notion that anyone can have their door kicked in and call 911 and be saved is fantastical.
Not true. Been there thousands of times to apprehend while perpetrator is still on scene. You may have a very rigid picture of its application. On view PC arrests with crimes against persons is the proof.

In my experience and with a 30 person shift there may be around a ten to fifteen arrest count as a result of a call for service in a metro police department. I will agree that the smaller the agency the longer the response time due to travel. Patrol areas in metro areas shouldn't be less that a 4 minute response time if the area car is in service

Don't be stupid I have more of a chance with enough police presence then without. Just Lol if you think 99% of men don't take advantage of women in vulnerable positions that they find "Attractive" So without police wtf you think happens to us? Some kind men are going to protect us little women folk? Your ideas are dumb anyone saying no police is better, it deters for the most part and you can hide until help does arrive without them there is NOTHING but worse assaults & blackmail. Thinking society can protect their own, listen men don't do anything helpful from the kindness of their hearts not when they see someone they want something from I have experienced multiple trying throughout my life as a woman I am aware of this.

Also would love to see those who think they can police themselves try going outside telling this group to stfu so you can sleep, you do realize what they would do if you did right ? You and your 1 man army going to take them all on. Try living in rough cities that are already having trouble with under staffed police, crime rate goes way up, and these types don't like being confronted so LOL.

4 minutes is a long time to survive for a woman against a motivated attacker.

I think in Raleigh avg code 1 response is 6 minutes.

Having been in that situation once without a firearm and just a knife I realized 6 minutes feels like eternity.

Fortunately the guy breaking in was a cop and we didn't kill each other.

I'm truly glad that I didn't hurt him.

Buy yourself a pistol. It's a great equalizer.
