I'm surprised the window was so small. The short term economic impact was always going to be negative. But I also think there were a lot of other unforeseen circumstances that contributed, not just corona.

There will always be unforeseen circumstances. That's part of the point. If not corons, war. If not war, a burst bubble. Taking your country our of a massive economic zone in a world that functions the way it does today will hurt. A lot. Boris campaigned on lower immigration, and it took 1 shock for him to go on a begging spree for Europeans to return and for more Asians to come.

We all bitch and moan during good times. But come bad times, we'd all be begging for the conditions we once hated. I hate China, you hate China, we all hate China. But if China decouples from Australia, it would be all sorts of ugly.

The point is, the way the way the world was heading a few years ago wasn't too bad at all. There was no need to upend the entire system. But people get bored, and like i said, it's very easy to bitch and moan when times are good and you're relatively successful.

Anybody who's willing to trade success to take some kind of unneccessary (that's a key word) moral stand is either:
1) not really successful to begin with
2) lying
3) ignorant about the implications

None of this is true, especially the part about me hating China (I also never knew you were a Chinaphobe). But it's a little too much to delve into in the chat thread.

I don't know what a Chinaphobe is. But i don't think any rational person approves of the way China does business (not entirely, but some of the business practices), or the uber authoritarian way it governs its people. I have no problem with China otherwise.

The chat thread is the only place we can have level headed conversations tbh. It's just mud slinging outside of this thread.

Very true. Not only is misc a reflection of greater society, but it's also concentrated the worst parts of it in a lot of ways.

Virtually every economic indicator is going to be bunk for what the consensus intent for the economic indicators mean or measure for the next year at least - and possible 2 years.

Positive ones won’t necessarily mean positives , negatives won’t really mean negative all the time etc

Unemployment is a classic example- it is virtually meaningless to what we normally would compare to right now.

Y’all need to drop that bet and re-configure the parameters/ timeline

It’s basicly like betting on a boxing match and the arena caught four hours before the match was supposed to start.

This is all understandably different now, and neither would be considered a welcher..

Form was prob gonna win it regardless, and still might.

I’d recommend both backing out , Who would want to win with bunk indicators

i.e using the US version of how GDP quarterly growth is calculated for the Q3- wouldn’t even be relevant and might be a huge increase- does that mean we are good?

This is the same kind of logic that businesses should stay conglomerated or merge to massive conglomerates because their size is inevitably going to come to only possible way to succeed in our modern system.

Brb- merge with walmar in the 90’s or you are through - oops amazon

Brb - merge with Aol in the late 90’s or your through- oops google

You can take some thing that’s been selling for years and compete with the big boys, a cup of coffee is it proprietary and been around for years you won’t beat the Giants- oops
Starbucks

At times massive structures or beacracies can Stifle unique moves a slightly smaller but still relevant group needs to make with unneeded in self-imposed obstacles.

It was a weird method of exiting imo, but end the end they will be better

While its nice of you to point out the success of liberal businesses (Amazon, Google, Starbucks), i don't see the parallels between what you're saying and what was saying.

To rephrase, don't upend the entire system. Incremental changes are fine on a macro level, and bigger ones maybe on a micro level. Let things flow in a manner that seems organic, even if they're not. Much less opposition happens on a policy level when that's the case.

It’s deteriorated on main t/p for sure.

I don't know quite what you're talking about. Four hundred years ago is roundabouts when whites brought black slaves to America.

That's great. It's obviously possible...Uganda has had cases. But no deaths...they were super strict, and did contact tracing on everyone m. 763 cases, and no deaths yet. Ebola had scared them badly in the past.

Places like that are worried there will be an airborne hemorrhagic fever one day...if that day comes, it's going to be a real horror show. Based on our coronavirus response, USA will not do very well. This is not even serving as a wake up call for us, because so many people see the low mortality for the population rather than the case fatality rate...

Just wait until there's one of those airborne Ebola or Marburg with case fatality of 50% or 80%...we won't be ready, and won't believe it's real until it's too late.
