What whiskey would I like if I dont like whiskey?

I like the idea of drinking whiskey, I went out and bought of a bottle of Glengoyne 12 years but I dont like it.

Is there a whiskey that doesn't taste like whiskey? Canadian club maybe?

Lagavulin and Aberlour are my favourites. They taste like whisky though I'm afraid OP

Jameson or Bushmills, very smooth with vanilla/honey flavors to them. Add a little ice the first time, then a splash of water after that, then try it neat.

They still taste like whiskey but very smooth and easy to drink. Things like a peated (smoked) scotch like Ardbeg or Lagavulin are my favorite but that's definitely the deep end of the swimming pool, don't start there.

Try anything aged in a port (or to a lesser degree, sherry) barrel, softens the intensity a bit while adding more to the flavour.

Also stay away from whiskies from notoriously smokey/peaty regions like Islay / Highlands

Probably Canadian Club, yes. It is quite different to other whiskeys.

Personally i don't like Scotch or Irish Whiskey a lot either.

Jack (Tenessee Whiskey, maple flavour) or Bourbon are ok with some melted ice/water but can be a bit too sweet to drink a lot.

CC (Rye whiskey) hits the right middle for me. Drinkable over ice with a but of lime or just with water. Mixes well with whatever if you go that way.

I'm no whiskey expert but I'd recommend 2 things: 1) finish the bottle that you don't like. Not all at once, maybe have a few drinks then switch to something you like and notice how your palette changes a bit and; 2)try different styles. You might find a style or brand you want to explore further. I find the middle to middle-low tiers can be decent enough and not try to kill you with nuance, but taste good enough and are smooth enough for noobs.

Vodka is more convenient than whiskey... Whiskey is nice but it kind of stinks. Vodka is more neutral smelling

Still though, drink whatever ya like.

Gin is better. Never understood the whole whiskey thing. Whiskey isn't smooth at all no matter how age or expensive it is. Jameson would be the closest thing to a whiskey that's tolerable.

I've got a few bottles in my liquor cabinet that would beg to differ, but smoothness is a personal taste thing. What I consider smooth you might not and vice versa.

OP, as others have said, Irish and Canadian/rye whiskeys are probably the most palatable for a noob. Also some of the flavored whiskeys are good starting points. I will probably never buy it again but Jim Beam Red Stag is what initially got me on a whiskey kick.

Hudson Baby Bourbon, Makers 46, Blantons, Bulleit Rye, Lagavulin, and Macallan are all pretty good.

I recently got into another cheaper Whiskey called Spicebox. It's a spiced whiskey but does not have that ass flavor like fireball. You could drink it straight or mix it with Ginger Ale or Coke. Also

I seriously used to dislike Whiskey because I was ripping shots of Jameson and Jack Daniels and it was pretty ass. Then as I got older and started finding out about the different kinds I got hooked. You could do Whiskey tastings at some distilleries or events. The first shot of Whiskey that I actually liked was from the Bushmills Factory and it was a 21-Year aged whiskey, it was phenomenal.

Hudson baby bourbon was just kind of meh, and Blantons is good but not worth the hype imho. Makers 46 and bulleit rye are both good for the price tag, and I can't comment on the other two as I'm not much for scotch in general, I'm a bourbon guy.

My favorite offerings right now are from Balcones distillery down here in Texas (everything in their lineup I've tried has been delicious, but I heard to stay away from the blue corn one), and Angel's Envy is a solid staple in my cabinet. Jim Beam Black label will also always have a place in my stock as the best budget bourbon I've ever tried. Good for guests or when I want something simple or even the rare occasion I want a cocktail and don't want to use top notch bourbon for that.

If you are looking for a gateway drug into whiskey I would suggest the flavored ones from the big brands. Crown Royal flavors. American Honey by Wild Turkey and such. They make the transition into pure whiskey flavor easier. Or start drinking Manhattans to soften the blow. But just pure whiskey flavor is an acquired taste. Nothing is going to knock it out the park immediately.

No doubt there is better alcohol, different flavors, etc. It's not that I can't taste the difference, it's that it still tastes like chit poison because that's what Ethanol tastes like and you can't have any spirit without Ethanol.
