And remember the objective of boxing is to damage the other guy more than he damages you.
That is how rounds are scored if there is no knockdown or no knockout in the round. Have fun OP.
If you hurt the guy more than he hurts you in Round 1, and lets say none of you got knocked down, then you win Round 1.

They will either one of two things: throw you into sparring very early to see how you react or just let you do whatever you want and not give you any attention. If you go spar early, do well in the sense that you were not afraid and keep coming back then the coaches will start giving you more attention. They are not gonna waste their time and energy on a guy that has no chance at competing on any serious level.

You go to a fitness "boxing" gym with sloots if what you want to do is just fitness and mingle with sloots. Ff you want to learn how to box though, join a real boxing gym.
Most boxing gyms have free classes. You can take those for the basics and then get a trainer if you want to keep at it.

Right on OP, I've been looking into joining one too.
My friend in high school boxed and learning little things from him improved my enjoyment of pro boxing too.

Go to philadelphia or some ghetto ass neighborhood. Those gyms are usually real gyms.
You need a pure boxing gym only, none of that fitness/maa/kickboxing/boxing rotation bs gyms.
I want to join one soon but if i'm paying $60 a month to hit a heavybag, isn't it cheaper to just buy a heavy bag in my backyard?

Youll get a good workout at a "boxercise" type gym and there will be more sloots around, but you wont learn technique and youll quickly develop bad habits.
If you are serious about it as a sport its essential to join a real gym.

If you’re gonna do it do it right OP and go to a real boxing gym. I encourage everybody to learn how to use their hands properly, it’s a life changer.

Once you get good enough, you can minimize getting hit flush. But you're still going to get hit.

My opinion still stands, padwork on getting down the fundamentals should always come before sparring. But not just padwork, correct padwork and knowledge of good fighting techniques is a rarity also. There's alot of bad techniques being taught all around the board. But its not just in boxing where bad techniques are being taught by instructors, its also in places, and out of all places, nail salons where they fk up ur nails.
Essentially what most people are saying when they say they want to join a boxing gym is this, they want access to sparring after hitting the bags. Because really that's all they can afford but that's the wrong way to approach boxing.

I'm also factoring OP's age because the reality of OP doing anything in boxing is slim to none and the trainers know that. If you are a young kid and the trainer sees potential then he will put more time in because he sees a possible investment of his time.
If you get a new trainer who just barely started training clients then he will put more time with you because he doesnt have guys that are competing.
It's analogous to an employer that doesnt want to hire a person with no experience and have to teach him/her everything. They rather have a person who has experience who can come in and work efficiently.
Now if you pay for private lessons then you will get attention. But those are very expensive.
To answer your question. You can learn by watching more experienced guys and asking questions. A trainer will answer your question if you ask. In the beginning they will put a bit of time with you to make it seem like they care, but basically they will give you a basic routine. They'll tell you to start off with 3-5 rounds of jump rope, then 3-5 rounds of shadow boxing, 5 rounds of heavy bag, finish it off with some double-end bag and speed bag plus abs/calisthenics. But they wont be watching you every round to see if you are doing everything the right way.

-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

I've trained at muay thai and mma gyms and aside from private sessions (which isn't worth it especially in mma), the trainers are probably going to be legit and there will be lot's of drills and pad work. Sparring is probably optional and also invitational.
It's going to be a lot of fun OP, you're going to learn lots, especially when you're exhausted that's when the techniques really shine.

Go to a real boxing gym. Your best bet is the local Police Athletic League. You pay a low annual donation and the coaches there will help you. You can get very good on this alone. You''l find most people serious about boxing stated at the local PAL.
If you show any promise of becoming a good fighter, (do well at golden gloves, Olympic try outs) then you can look into hiring a coach.

Private lessons are real expensive so definitely not something i can afford.
I guess asking other trainers for pointers would be nice, but i think if you're on your own in the gym, without mitt work, without real advice or lessons...
Then it's better to just buy a heavy bag and teach yourself.
I can jump rope, shadowbox and do bag work by myself and save money.
And unless you know what you're doing, sparring is out of the question for beginners. Unfortunately this makes a boxing gym a lot less appealing.

If you join these boxing gyms, you skill set will be at amateur and pro. It will not be at best because you won't know what is best. I do. The funny thing is, being best is really all about what you know(only a handful of things) and implementing it.
For starters, if your cardio is chit, you won't make it into pro. Good cardio is very hard to achieve and takes a massive amount of discipline.
I did research alongside the best boxer in the world. See sig.

In. Want to take boxing soon too. No better striking martial art imo.
My dad told me a story about a guy in his NG unit who used to box and he got into a bar fight once and layed this big dude out. The big guy got upset because he had left and came back to my dads buddy chatting up the girl he was with.
The guy tried to diffuse the situation but the big dude wanted to act macho in front of his lady friend lol.

Some boxers include learning to take a nasty hit in their training if they know their opponent is much bigger or stronger than them.
