Nope. Can only speak from my experience, but people of all ages were allowed to participate. I was in teens and still welcome in my 20's. Had guys in their 30's competing in golden gloves fighting with the PAL. Even had some old timers and former pros there just for the workout space.

Sure its been covered but those fitness classes are a joke if you're serious about it. There are always a couple of girls learning at the gyms I've been to. Plus most gyms will have other fitness classes going on so you will probably run into sloots as you are coming/going.

Typically you will pay a monthly fee (anywhere from $20-120 IME) for group classes where an instructor teaches you alongside others. Good instructors will make rounds and give you pointers. Usually they let you try it out for a week to see how you like it so take advantage of that.
Do not think that what is hard for you to master is humanly impossible; and if it is humanly possible, consider it to be within your reach.

Getting punched in the face is part of boxing, no doubt about that. But the amount of times you get hit in the face is also very important and it should always be the lowest number in all your boxing stats. Your brain should be your number one priority. And quite frankly, many gyms don't place that as the main priority. And if you can't see why that should be the number priority, well its because your a peasant and im smarter than you.

If you like getting punched in the face and getting brain damage, by all means.

I always wanted to learn how to box until I realized a serious coach wont train you unless you got potential to be great. The alternative is to go to those cardio boxing classes...
-Some people say good things come to those who wait, truth is, good things come to those who work..... who work later.....who work harder...... who are willing to go further than anyone else to get them. If you're waiting for good things to come to you, you'll be waiting for a pretty long time.

-I'd rather live life saying "I failed" than "I could have"

I want to learn... but the idea of mingling with sloots sounds good too.

Also how does a real boxing gym work? Do I have to pay some guy per lesson? Which I imagine isn't cheap.

Or are there group classes?
Go to a real gym

Every once in a while I'll go to one of these boxercise classes that our gym provides when my boxing gym isn't open for whatever reason, I'll just look around at the people training and just lol.

No you cannot learn to box at these fitness classes

Keep in mind it's ran by a real trainer who has his own real gym that regularly brings in his fighters to spar, he just couldn't care enough to teach em.

You have never fought or even thrown a single punch at another person in your entire life. Just admit it and we can move on, srs.

Do not spar with anyone for at least 3 months, they all lie about how long they've been boxing. They will spark you out, head gear won't help that much. Also Freddie Roach had a basic boxing youtube video back in the day, it will teach you how to stand and position your feet. Thats the first lesson, then you learn to throw.

Another option for OP is doing zoom sessions with top trainers to learn the fundamentals. There are guys on IG that are really legit and will break down everything. Coach Anthony, Mustafaboxing, Frankboxingcoach, Boxingforliferonny are just a few. Idk how much they charge though.

You are not preaching rocket science though. "Try not to get hit!". I mean, take it easy now.

You start practicing boxing and you will have to learn how to take a punch and recover from it, even if you never need to use that skill, if you need it you better know it. OP will have to suffer trough several power punches to the chin before he even gets to a level where he can say his footwork is "decent"

Actually it is rocket science if look at the from the way I will explain:

Boxing has always been a gnashing of teeth, brains, and wits between different countries, gyms, trainers, and boxers. People have sought for the best techniques in order to outdo their opponent. And the measurement for all of this, is compustats(boxing stats) and money generation in different forms.

Sometimes very basic things(good defense) are overlooked or given less importance. Once that happens its no longer a basic thing - it becomes a complicated thing.

So while hit while not get hit may sound simple enough, most don't put enough thought into it. Rather, brain power and training is diverted into offense.

Again, people itt are saying to waltz right in and take punches in the face like a man. Just because they got beat up doesn't mean you have to.

There are different styles to boxing and not everyone is fit for every style.
Not everyone is a good outboxer that dodges punches and dances around.
Some people do better slugging it out because they have strong punching power and a good chin.
Or because they're short/short reach and thus prefer infighting.

each style has its pros and cons.

There's no such thing as style. People only fight they way do based on what they know and how they've been trained. You can choose to be more defensive or offensive but that's based on how you are feeling and what the opponent is giving you, not style. If they knew a better way of fighting, they'd do that.

There's definitely something called style. You have the boxer, slugger, volume punches.
Boxers are outboxers like ali, sluggers are usually big punchers and volume punchers like to get on the inside and wear their opponent out.

Then there are boxers like counter punchers who take a more waiting approach. Each person is different. And not everyone would be as succesful in one style compared to the other. I think you definitely don't have any clue about boxing if you don't think styles exist.

No it's completely relevant, how are you gonna tell people that actually fight that they don't know what they're talking about and you do when you've never even thrown a punch at a person.

No matter how good you are you're still gonna get hit and you need to learn to deal with that, floyd jr still gets hit.

Floyd Patterson was great i feel he doesn't get enough recognition like many others don't like i feel frazier and Liston don't get the credit they deserve, especially considering Patterson trained other cus

Man i'm serious though i wish frazier was still kicking about in his gym, i'd drop everything i own to move there just for a chance to train under him, frazier is my hero srs. Can't believe it's a furniture store now

Man i'm serious though i wish frazier was still kicking about in his gym, i'd drop everything i own to move there just for a chance to train under him, frazier is my hero srs. Can't believe it's a furniture store now
Floyd would've dominated any light heavyweight. But despite his small size, he still managed to be the heavyweight champ.
I love his gazelle punch most of all.

Joe Frazier was one of the goats. He had great heart too. In his third fight against ali, he wanted to keep going in the last round but his corner stopped him. Meanwhile ali wanted to quit but his corner made him continue. It's sad the gym turned into a furniture store.
I think only a very few goat trainers still exist. Kevin Rooney is still active in catskill NY (mike tyson second trainer after cus'd amato passed)

Damn i didn't know Kevin Rooney was still training people, what a dream it'd be to be trained by him.

I always wondered if joes team didn't make him quit, how much his legacy would have changed. I think if he won that fight and the foreman fights didn't happen he would have been regarded as a all time goat. The reason joes corner stopped the fight is because his eye was swelled up and he was blind in the other eye, so if it continued he would have went out literally blind.

So are you planning on taking up boxing?

Been wanting to for a long time. But right now i don't have a car yet, so i'm saving money. The only real boxing gyms are pretty far away from me so i need transportation first.
That said, as i mentioned before itt, if the boxing gym has a coach that doesn't give pointers/advice and all i do is pay $60+ a month to hit the bag, i might as well invest in a heavybag myself and some good gloves/tape and practice in my backyard.
Ideally, you'd learn boxing legit, do mitt work, learn how to properly punch/block/slip and all that. And then after a few months, you spar against someone who will go easy on you so you learn something instead of simply trying to survive while getting beat up.

For now, it's all in the open though. Gotta get a car first, then try a gym out. But most likely i'll stick to purchasing a heavy bag for now.
How about you, you already box?
