I wouldn't say Euros were 'most successful'. Personally, I'd give that crown of 'best conquerers' to the Mongols.

White Euros are just the 'contemporary conquerers' who have been most successful for the last 400 years or so. If you go back to anytime before that, imperial subjects always lamented their conquering Arab, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Persian etc overlords.

But it is a tad strange that a seemingly intelligent guy like Tyson would lack such a basic perspective. At least in todays world you can talk all the chit you want about the latest top conquerers, without the fear of being impaled or your family getting beheaded.

Victimhood is a form a currency now.

Neil Degrasse Tyson makes me cringe to my core. I don't know why he parades himself as a scientist - he has a handful of unimportant publications in low impact journals. I know PhD students with better papers.

Surely the British or Romans? Those two had the biggest impact on human history with their conquests. There is very little legacy of the Mongol empire - they were mainly nomadic.

Because he still has a PhD and he contributed to the field. He is a communicator of science and an educator. Sure, he's not at the same level as Susskind, Hamed, Maldacena, etc. But he is a good emissary for science.

Not every great figure in science must be the greatest scientist. Look at Griffiths. Everyone uses his textbooks. He wasn't distinguished for his research, but rather for his mastery of the fundamentals and his ability to communicate them. His work has helped a lot of people learn what were otherwise very obscure topics at an accessible undergraduate level.
