Advice - Prank gone wrong

Pushed my brother in law into swimming pool as a joke. He had his phone in his pocket, unbeknownst to me. Not sure if it's going to work when it dries out.

He's taken it really well but I feel terrible. I offered to buy him a new phone but he told me not to worry.

How bad was what I did? And how can I make it right?

Ah, so you're that a-hole OPie

The correct thing to do is simply say, "it was just a prank, bro"

Problem solved

I 100% want to buy him a new phone but he won't let me. He had an old Huawei that cost about $70 but I will just get him a sweet Samsung Galaxy or something as I feel terrible about this.

Any recommendations for Android phones around $500?

I broke his phone so not sure texting him is an option.

Genuinely feel awful about this. No more stupid 'pranks'.

Pushing somone into a swimming pool is very 90s. That prank died when the smart phone became normality.

Pretty much this. You should always assume somebody has a phone in their pocket if they're dry at the pool.

If I were you I'd probably offer to get him a new phone. If he says no, take him out to a nice dinner or something. That's your brother man

How did you concoct such a clever and elaborate prank? How many months of planning did it take and how many family members were involved?

Must've been a lot of long nights sitting around blueprints eating Chinese takeout like in the movies

It was an utterly stupid thing to do. All i can do is get him a much better phone than the one he has/had to make it up to him.

Trying to dry the phone in rice to see if it will work but ill get him a new phone regardless.

Tell him you are sorry, and that you owe it to him as a man to give him a new phone because you ruined his old one. Tell him that you don't want to hear it, that you don't want anything in return, or special treatment, that you are doing what you do as a man to make this right. He's kind of giving off the vibe he doesn't want to piss you off by making you pay for it.

In my opinion it would be more alpha to pay for his new phone than sit back like beta and not own up to your mistake. Talk your sister (or bro if gay), and tell them you want to pay for the phone, and it's non-negotiable. Buy him like the last gen of the Galaxy or some chit for cheap, shouldn't be that bad. I've broken my friends stuff inadvertently or when borrowing it and I pay for the exact make/model that they lent to me in comparable/new condition. Of course some people are like nah it's cool, but I don't want to be known as that kind of guy so I'll either pay them back or replace it. My BIL lent me his gold clubs and I absolutely destroy the golf ball on my drives. I snapped the shaft of his driver and I called him and let him know. He said it was cool and that he would fix it. I said sure thing, no problem, and then I went out and got it fixed with a better shaft than the one he had on originally and cleaned all the clubs/bag, cost me around $150 but I didn't balk at the cost because he is my friend.

You can't pull pranks like this anymore these days. Everyone has a little square machine in their pocket worth potentially thousands. In the 90s it was funny and harmless to push someone in a pool. Not so much anymore.
