Death fascinates me. If I allow my brain to go down certain trains of thought, I can develop a pretty significant death anxiety, but for the most part I just try to be real with myself about it. It can actually be motivating.

Momento Mori is a stoic mantra meaning “remember you will die”, which can remove certain reservations you have about accomplishing, or attempting to accomplish things.

At the advice of Dr. Sam Harris, I try to keep in mind that everyone we interact with will die. They will suffer the grief of death of a loved one, and their loved ones will suffer the grief of their loss.

It is pretty hard to get road rage with someone who is just running late to work when you empathize with them and acknowledge they are going to die in the not too distant future, and at the same time realizing you yourself don’t have too much time left. Is this how I want to spend it?

One of the primary points of Eckart Tolle’s book, “The Power of Now”, is that death is an illusion. I understand the thinking behind it, but even having this perspective does not remove all anxiety about death.

That dude that said he isn’t scared because he is “saved”, the lie detector test determined that to be a lie. No one is immune to death anxiety regardless of your views on the afterlife. You ain’t special.

The first one I read was “Waking Up, A Guide to Spirituality without Religion”. The primary focus of the book is the positive impact of meditation and the importance of it. It is what his “Waking Up” podcasts are based on, and I subscribe to his waking up app as well.

When I read it the first time, it just so happened to the book I read immediately following reading the book “The Future of the Mind” by Dr. Michio Kaku. This worked out really well because in his book, Kaku briefly touched on a topic I had not previously been introduced to in any serious manner. It got my attention for sure, but it only planted a seed that Harris’ book watered and grew. He ended up going into great detail about in a very convincing way. It is what helps me subscribe to the idea of death being an illusion expressed by Tolle. Harris nails it hard man.

The concept is that our own existence is an illusion.

His book “Free Will” is a pretty easy read and only takes me about two hours to read it. Guess what he thinks about free will....

I love this stuff man. I am really glad I somehow found my way exploring these types of perspectives.

I'm honestly looking forward to it. When you get to be done with all of the bullsh*t? That's one hell of a gift. People talk as if life is a gift. Naw, death is the gift. But you can't cheat your way to it and open it early, takes away the value of the gift imo.

Actually death was abolished 2000 years ago on the cross outside Jerusalem. That is the only thing that is guaranteed, the opposite of what you said.

What was it like not existing 100 years ago? 100 years ago you were not born, which is the same non-existence as after you die, so what is there to be fearful of?

Life can be considered the longest single experience any human can go through, but you will spend far more time dead than alive so again, why fear it?

I wouldn’t fear death, but I can understand why somebody might fear the way they die.
