They did that at the beginning and it was too brutal for their own troops to do on a big scale, they soldiers developed lots of trauma and mental health issues that disabled them after being forced to shoot unamerd civillians of all ages. Not good for their own morale in short, that's why they had all those mechanisms and facilities to further dehumanize them and make the killing a mechanichal process.

Like a poster above I'm also currently reading "ordinary men". The logistics, manpower and money that went into exterminating the Jews is mind boggling. You could argue that from a German perspective these would have been better utilised to support the war effort. On the other hand, Nazi's from that time would possibly argue that by eradicating the Jews in newly conquered territories, they preemptively stopped any subversion etc and therefore the final solution may have been seen as pivotal to victory as opposed to a secondary objective.

According to Speer's memoirs, Himmler was adamant on keeping prisoners in order to make them work for free. Speer tried to use some stone delivered by the SS but it seems that when you use malnourished mistreated prisoners, all the products you get are crap. There's a lot of dumb ideas and sadism here, logic and the pursuit of efficiency were not the top priorities of these opportunistic clowns.
There were a lot of money sinks in the Reich as the ministers were non-coordinated while the money obtained from the exploitation of low-wage workers, loans and general pillage seemed neverending at first. But for some reason people here think it would be like the Wolfenstein video games with skull-decorated high-tech everywhere and people looking like their favorite gay pornstar. I blame Hollywood and video games.

But from what I see, there's a lot of dumb ideas and sadism on the misc as well.
