No pain in the ass at all. It's nice to have some proper lifting discussion on here.

The vid you posted looks more like a paused deadlift as the plates actually leave the floor, but I get your point. I do agree that you should always develop as much tension as possible prior to initiating the lift. If you watch the video I posted you can see that I do that, and the beginning of each rep is a steady pull, not a jerk. I think this is more a confusion of terminology than a disagreement TBH. When I think "pull the slack" vs "get tight" those are two very different cues in my mind.

You're not being a pain, and the advice is good.

It's just sort of majoring in the minors in my opinion when some of the deadlifts itt have much bigger issues to deal with than that.

The way I deadlift (smooth pull, squat the weight) still effectively pulls slack out of the bar. It's just not something I think about or overdramatize.

Video isn't great, but I think you can see that the slack still gets pulled out of the bar.

Yeah that's my 3rd pull. Nov 1, 2014.

And yeah I had 600 that day, but I'm a sucker for a nice round number (and a meet PR).

I think the deadlift is the one lift where there is no technique involved, just make sure you're tight and not leaking any energy and pull as hard as you can, that's it.

I actually agree with this in a sense. Experiment with foot width and grip width, find a position you are strong in and doesn't look haggard, and get as tight as possible. There are technique cues in certain scenarios, especially if garbage form has become habitual, but it isn't a very complicated lift.

That POS Crossfit vid posted above is showcasing fatigue and inappropriate weight being attempted. Anyone trying pull a 1RM or above a 1RM after doing other ***gy stuff is going to look horrendous

not at all. I see twinks sumo pulling 700lbs+ but can’t even squat 400lb

[QUOTE=Supearman post_id=1611283801]I understand that it's not as visible (the bar being bent and the plates still touching the floor) with lighter weights, but you can and should pull slack at any weight. If it's light enough (think 1 or 2 plates) the bar should be floating before you even start the lift.

Here's 315, I see a ton of slack being pulled here

Haven't read the rest of the thread.

Bar is too far away from your shins at the bottom of the lift. You're also wearing terrible shoes for deadlifting, but it doesn't necessarily matter I guess - barefoot or flat, thin soled shoes would be better.

it doesn’t. true test of lower body strength is belt-less highbar squat

deadlift is an ego exercise. it’s fun I won’t deny but none of it is true strength. have seen a video of Calier woolam (900lb+ puller) deadlifting in front of college football players. he barely got tapped by one of them and flew across the room

While I agree that my example was extreme, try telling Cailer Woolam, Jamal Browner, or Stefi Cohen that technique has nothing to do with deadlifting and they should just grip it and rip it.

Maybe if you had focused on your technique more you could have hit a 5 plate pull prior to "retirement." (Not hating on 480, just saying you could have probably done better with some technique tweaks/fixes.)

Tbh if I had to pick between just conventional or sumo for the rest of my life, for training purposes I'd go sumo.

Safer and less likelihood of injuries, works similar muscle groups, and I feel it more in my glutes.

But yeah from a "looking impressive" standpoint, sumo looks ghey compared to conventional. Dat frog stance.

Second the shoes comments. There's a lot of rocking in your feet, though you generally go on your toes to initiate the pull and then lockout on your heels. Ideal would be even foot pressure throughout of course.

Re: hips rising, my preferred method is sort of setting up like a SLDL, then moving your butt down as you pull your hamstrings taut before initiating the pull. Seeing a lot of dynamic starts ITT, which I wouldn't mess with without polished and consistent static form first; just won't reap the benefits.

am i being retarded for taking my shoes off for deadlifting? It just feels better. Same for squatting, i even purchased those 300 bucks nike squat shoes and i ditched them after a few sessions and kept going at it barefoot

If you’re not going to compete, squatting barefoot is great. I do it sometimes myself.

Nah, I think you're ok with whatever as long as your foot pressure is even throughout, and you have a hard connection to the ground (i.e. not wearing cushiony running shoes).

I'll wear squat shoes for squatting because I like to be super upright/really emphasize the high bar, but I still squat barefoot or in random **** from time to time.

For deadlift, the shoes seem even less relevant. Pretty sure most pros do not use squat shoes for deadlifting since you're basically adding a slight deficit to your deadlifts with the 3/4" heel of most shoes (making things harder). I usually aim for barefoot or flat shoes, whatever's best for whether I'm in a gym and for least slippage.

cliffs: deadlifting barefoot is goat if you aren't slipping. wear whatever for squats as long as no cushion and you perform the lift well.
