The U.S. government has reached a $1.95 billion deal with Pfizer and BioNTech for 100 million doses of their experimental COVID-19 vaccine once it obtains Food and Drug Administration approval.

An additional 500 million doses can be acquired, and U.S. citizens would receive the vaccine for free, according to the agreement. A Phase 2b/3 trial of the vaccine, with human subjects, is scheduled to start later this month and will be subject to regulatory review as early as October 2020. If successful, 100 million doses would be manufactured by the end of this year and possibly more than 1.3 billion would be produced in 2021.

"Adding a vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech" to the government's Operation Warp Speed inoculation-development program "increases the odds that we will have a safe, effective vaccine as soon as the end of this year,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement.

Operation Warp Speedaims to deliver 300 million doses of a safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine by January 2021. The initiative accelerates the development, production and distribution of tests, treatments and vaccines for the disease, which has reached pandemic proportions worldwide, infecting more than 3 million people in the U.S. and killing 142,000.

I remember when this first started they were saying an extremely optimistic and record breaking Vaccination development would take at least 18 months. This timeframe alone is crazy for a vaccine. Now they are cutting that in half, lol.

Not exactly gonna jump to the front of the line on this one.

They definitely expedited the regulation process and put it first on the list. 18 months is actually pretty generous because I'm pretty sure most drugs take around 4-5 years to be put on market

Yeah brah, that's my point. Normal timeframe is 4-5 years, 2 years if you're really lucky. 18 months was a really ambitious timeline, but they cut that down as well. Who knows what this vaccine could possibly do long term.

Tbf I’m pretty sure they don’t start from scratch with these, they’re derived from a vaccine they were already working on - could be wrong though but that’s what I read on the Oxford breakthrough

That's the problem. It might take care of the COVID issue but no telling what the long term side effects could be. I'd rather see them developing a drug treatment that actually works to minimize the impact of the virus itself even if you get it.

Was listening to a podcast the other day that said 50% of Americans would not get or were hesitant to getting the rushed vaccine.

About 40-50% of americans get the flu shot

Considering that they are about as deadly, looks like we got 2 flus to deal with for the foreseeable future.

I work in healthcare so it will probably be mandatory for me. I just hope the first adopters start exhibiting the potential nasty side effects before I get my dose.

and WTF is "operation warp speed" as if a vaccine created in a years time is a good thing. A vaccine is not something you "rush" to the market. You base the effectiveness and safety of a vaccine due to the length of time its been tested and on the market, not the lack of it. This isn't a fast food drive thru where you're excited that your burger was made in under a minute. I want to be able to look at a decade of studies among various demographics and ethnic groups.

Well, that wont work since the vast majority of the worlds countries has barred americans from entering their countries because we screwed up on curtailing the virus.

It would have to be somewhere english speaking. Canada (since its closest) then New Zealand and probably Australia....and all the european countries are tied for 4th place.
