Machines can learn unsupervised at the speed of light

Researchers have achieved a breakthrough in the development of artificial intelligence by using light instead of electricity to perform computations.

The new approach significantly improves both the speed and efficiency of machine learning neural networks – a form of AI that aims to replicate the functions performed by a human brain in order to teach itself a task without supervision.

I have watched enough Sci-Fi movies to know that either a Terminator is going to show up and help us for the good of mankind--butnot beforea Terminator shows up to kill some random brah in the middle of LA...

Or that one of the robots is going to turn good and be the thing that saves us, and that Will Smith will redeem himself by helping that robot understand what he has to do.

Yeah but learning at the speed of electricity was already unbelievably fast. AI wont take off until the machines can improve themselves, which I do believe is inevitable, but it could happen in 2 weeks or 200 years.
