Chicago Took Down Columbus Statue

Work crews arrived early Friday to remove a Christopher Columbus statue from Chicago’s Grant Park – a week after rioters clashed with city police as they attempted to tear the statue down. Videos and still images posted on social media showed the statue draped in a cloth as a crane pulled up to dislodge it from a pedestal before driving off.

Christopher Columbus is a historical figure. Even in Brasil/Philippines, he is taught in school. What do some Americans have against him?!

It's nice to see they are really tackling the hard hitting issues that plague that city. I'm sure shootings and murders rates will immediately decrease.

They'll just follow the script and blame those on a lack of gun control.

Meanwhile I live in an area with way more guns per capita and almost no gun violence.

Ever since the new mayor took office, thug crime has increased a ton in the city. Everyday I check the news for Chicago and everyday the main story is a shooting. This city will not get better, the thugs are running free because the mayor lets this happen. Trumps Fed agents will not stop this either, it’s too far at this point.

Brb shooting on wabash bridge right at the river walk at 2am

Brb driveby shootings on the highways

It used to be isolated in the bad areas, but now it seems it’s moving more and more into the city center and suburbs.

It's a shame really. Chicago is a really cool city with lots to see and do. Couple more years and it's going to be like Detroit if something doesn't change.

To WHChampion - I also live in a rural area with TONS of firearm ownership. Barely ever a shooting or murder. Castle Doctrine state as well.

There has been an intensive smear campaign by cultural marxists against him for 30+ years now. It's all built on lies.

Columbus was an explorer. A great explorer. He was also a religious man. One needs to understand history in context. He was a man of the 15th century and that's how he should be judged. It's disingenuous to judge him by 21st century standards, especially if those standards are not ones his judges apply to themselves. Few from the 15th century would be perfect by 21st century standards, and I'm sure there are legitimate minor criticisms of him, but he's not guilty of the horrific deeds Howard Zinn and other marxist *******s accuse him of.

It's unfathomable to me that public schools are teaching lies about Columbus and 2 whole generations have grown up believing him to be some sort of monster. He wasn't. It's all bullchit.

Yeah that's the part that gets me. No one can seem to grasp the fact that he should be judged as a man of his time. People will disagree with this while at the same time excusing criminals for being "products of their environment."

How are we supposed to be open minded yet we can’t accept the actions of people over 500 years ago. Absolutely mind blowing.

And do some research on what the natives were doing to each other when the Europeans arrived. Everyone has blood on their hands but people pretend like just white people do.

His "native american genocide" was just him showing up. 90% of the native population died from the common cold/flu because they didn't have chickens/pigs/cows which they could share diseases with so had no immunity. By the time the pilgrims came this had already happened.

One of the most famous quotes of his is completely wrong. And by completely wrong they attribute a quote to him where he actually said the exact opposite. It's propaganda and lies to the extreme. This quote is about how Columbus ordered his men to cut the hands and ears off of natives to punish them. When in reality he gave this punishment to Spanish settlers who treated the natives poorly.

Another quote about how he said the natives would be good slaves was actually him saying they would be good servants and in the context of the full paragraph he actually said they would be good servants to god aka good Christians. The Italian translation has the word "Christian" in it where the English translation has the word "Slave". Literally in the same spot.

Marxists pick and choose how to apply their standards. You are right it is absurd to judge a man from 1490s by 2020 standards when they dont even hold Obamas 2008 declaration "I believe marriage is between a man and a woman" against him.

I really enjoyed my summer I spent in Chicago about 5 years ago - I was literally a block away from Grant park as well. Shame to hear the city is deteriorating so quick and crime/violence is up. Seems to be the case with every large American city though, even here in Austin our murder rate is going up.

Also, is Columbus day already cancelled/racist? When will they get around to that one?

I am going to play devil's advocate and disagree with you.

Columbus is not judged by 21st century standards. He is judged by the Golden Rule- do unto others as you would have them do unto you. The Golden Rule is considered golden not because of its value (which is great) but because it is timeless. Pure gold never rusts or tarnishes. It remains in it's original state unless you deliberately diminish it by mixing it with some other thing.

I do agree that history should be understood in its context. It is useful to know what motivated people and how they justified their actions. People aren't binary creatures that are either good or evil. Not having evil or ****ed up thoughts doesn't make someone a good person. Not acting on or, even better, not entertaining evil and ****ed up thoughts is what makes someone a good person.

We all have bad impulses and not every thought that crosses our mind comes from our own volition. Temptations abound. This is all part of understanding empathy. Columbus was a man like any other and he had many temptations.

But the Golden Rule is timeless. It applies regardless of what era of men you were born into. If you subject someone to something you yourself would take great pains to avoid you ****ed up. You broke the rule. It doesn't require 21st century thinking to understand it. Conversely, it has always been understood. That is why 21st century thinking has evolved. But people still justify their behavior. They still mix the rule with other elements, causing it to tarnish and become diminished. The problem is that, for example, if one man can justify murder every man can justify murder. It's an all or nothing condition.

This is why the world is still filled with ****ty behavior and lost souls. Whether you and I agree or disagree about tearing down a statue is moot unless we take action. The world does not belong to the dead. It belongs to the living. Colimbus had his time to make his mark. It is over. It is our time now. What are we all going to do with it?
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

Eh.

This all came about because they only found the court records in Spain in 2005. The accusations against Columbus were mostly just rumors before that. How much of it is true is an open question, there were political and financial reasons some of the colonists wanted Columbus out, but even by the standards of his own time, he was accused of being a psychopathic criminal. The Spanish stripped him of his titles and much of the money they had promised him, and there were major legal battles with his heirs when he died because the government was absolutely bent on not paying him.

The colonists at Hispaniola hated him so much that even when he resumed his voyages, they repeatedly tried to get him killed, leaving him stranded on Jamaica for a year even after he sent a canoe across to beg for help, and also refusing him safe harbor when he claimed a hurricane was coming. (Ironically, they'd also loaded all his gold and personal belongings onto the worst ship in a treasure fleet bound for Spain in an intentional bid to sink it all, and it turned out to be the only ship that survived the storm. Many of his political enemies were with the fleet and drowned at sea. For years, the colonists apparently suspected that Columbus was also a Satanic wizard who could control storms.)

Point is, by the standards of his own time, either the dude was a massively incompetent son of a bitch from the bowels of hell, or the victim of an incredible smear campaign. Spent a lot of his later life trying to convince everybody that he was actually awesome and that they just didn't get it.

This is true about people getting confused and blaming things on Columbus - I've seen people claim he invented the African slave trade (WTF) - but a lot of people in their own time thought the conquistadors were nuts, too. The Spanish and the Church made multiple attempts to rein them in, but had almost no actual power. The early New World was basically a playground for them to run wild, including against each other, knowing there wasn't much anybody would do about it except send letters that said "no, wait, plz stahp". Even arresting Columbus and shipping him back in chains would have been nearly impossible without the colony's cooperation.
Nah, fukk that. I’m not doing that.

This.

If only BLM protestors were the great world explorers, they could show us with their strength and great organization how we should have done things years ago.

These people would rather be as advanced as Mongolia if only 100% equitable and tolerant. History is history, right or wrong, but this chit is ridiculous.
