The end of the coronavirus may not be the end of trouble for gyms in the U.S., according to one survey.

TD Ameritrade recently released the results of a survey on Americans’ lifestyle and finances. According to the survey, 59 percent of respondents said they won’t renew their gym memberships once the coronavirus pandemic is over.

In fact, 56 percent of respondents said the pandemic helped them figure out how to live a healthy lifestyle while spending less money.



sux how probably even after pandemic is over this will probably cause many gyms to go out of business

i can see prices going up because less people have memberships. but maybe those people never went anyway and will keep the membership to make themselves feel better?

Walked into LA fit the other day and dude tells me I have to wear a mask the entire time. Had him print me out the membership cancellation form to mail in to corporate. Went across the street to planet fitness and not a mask in sight.

by living a healthy lifestyle, they really mean sitting at home collecting stimulus cheques, binging on netflex and doing the odd couch stretch. Going outside would be too scary and compromise their health because of coronavirus. However, going to a BLM protest every other weekend is doable because we all know people who are for BLM are immune to it according to our expert medical doctors.


but srs note, I call BS. This is just copemaxxing and an excuse not to go to the gym "but I have these pink dumbbells and I bought this treadmill that I use maybe once a month". Not that these types really did anything in the gym but still. lmfao at these people thinking they found a healthier lifestyle that doesn't involve going to the gym. You can literally go to a planet fitness for $10 bucks a month, less than they are probably spending on detox shakes and vegan nutrition bars.

This can be bad and good. Some will close. The ones standing will make more money and gym will be pack af if most close and very few survive. Hate going to a crowded gym

I might sign up with a new gym but 24 has lost my business forever, and I've been a member since I was 12...

Brb charging me for the month of March
brb giving us a BS credit
brb offering add-on options upon reopening but since I don't have my password to log in and can't call anyone, and their password reset system doesn't work, I couldn't choose an add-on and no one to talk to to have it added
brb charging me $10 twice in 2 successive days for no apparent reason
brb reopening with a bunch of bullchit retarded restrictions for 2 weeks
brb closing right back down again

at this point i'm waiting for them to charge me for this months membership too just because they can.

IDK if I can even cancel my membership without calling or going to a gym, neither of which is an option at this time. But i'm either having a buddy build me a power cage and gonna buy some other supplemental stuff later on. Or find a local gym at similar price that isn't a piece of chit.

Just lol if u don't pay the lump sum in cash. This is the reason why I don't do monthly plans and give gym my credit card. I pay my gym 300 for 2 years cash at once so I don't gotta go thru the bs of them charging me for no reasons.

Well a different survey asked about gyms and 22% said they feel safe going back while 14% said that they felt ok taking a flight. I think the number was 34% for restaurants.

Most people are cautious and when i go to the gym, we all keep our distance and there may be about 20 of total in this huge space.

This too, it started with that specialized yoga then it moved to soul cycle and now a chain here in DC called Orange theory.

In the Houston, TX area, there's still a demand for gyms, especially since summers are brutal weather-wise. Not sure what's going on in other areas of the USA. I'd imagine there's still a demand in Northern states since they have legit cold fall/ winters with snow. Maybe people in California are more likely to cancel their gym since they have the best weather and cost of living is through the roof. IDK.

O well, more power racks for me to curl in.

This. Also guarantee that most of the ones that said they "found out how to have a healthy lifestyle cheaper" are just eating chips on their couch during lockdown.

Gyms would be back to about their normal capacity within a few months if COVID actually blew over entirely, but it won't.

My wife and I have put together a home gym. After the new year we will get some serious equipment but for now we have more than enough to maintain and even make some gains.

We had to go to so many stores to find equipment. Probably took us a month to piece everything together. We bought bicycles a year ago so we didn't have to worry about the run on them that followed weight lifting equipment.


After everything finally returns to normal I will occasion the gym for things I don't have at home and to people watch but that is it.
The closer we approach the uncertainty of life's ending the more we wish to trade all of the things we have acquired in exchange for all of the things we have lost: wealth for youth, knowledge for fresh curiosity, resignation for hope. We'd trade our wisdom for new experiences, but it is wisdom that will teach us that at the end of the road the only new experience is death.

People still pay for gym memberships? You can get a decent rack, bench, plate set for less than $1k.
