Saving Private Ryan is a terrible movie

Besides the opening scene it’s just a godawful film. It should have been named Searching for Matt Damon. I always lol at tools who praise this **** film

Thin Red Line >>>>>>>> SPR. War movie came out same year much better but not Spielberg. If SPR wasn’t Spielberg it would have been in bargain bin

Gangs of New York is another one with a great opening scene and then a horrendous mess of a film

It’s not a good film. I’ll give you the opening scene but the rest is just so dull.

Have you seen Thin Red Line? Much better war film. GOAT is Apocalyse Now of course but that’s a different type of film

Watched Apocalypse Now last year and it was a chore to get through. I get the cinematography aspect, but wasn’t that great.

Fury is a pretty underrated wartime film.

Never seen TTRL, but SPR is top 20 movies of all-time.

Nope. I don’t like superhero movies. I’m not 12.

Favorite movies are things like Warrior, The Pianist, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, The Prestige. Just not Apocalypse Now.

But even if you are right, the opening scene in SPR in theaters was epic. I wasn't ready for that chit and that alone makes the movie amazing.

Oh my god I thought I was alone on my feeling of “apocalypse now”. Chore is right. Then they came out with an extended version? Lol

Fury was a good mindless war movie to watch when nothing better is on. The last battle scene was such utter bullchit it made my head spin.

Add one more to the apocalypse now chore gang. The first half is amazing and then Marlon Brando completely ruined what the filmmaker envisioned by coming in obese which is why so many scenes were shot in near darkness and sitting.

Also negged OP for edgelord comments on SPR.

Nah I thoroughly enjoyed SPR. People are accustomed to war moves being all blow and go. Explosions, battle, killing, etc. SPR is about a unit that was given an individual mission/task during WWII. And their fulfillment of that task.

It wasn't about a bunch of killing. Winning a battle. Winning the war. Etc. And most importantly, no happy ending. We didn't have a unit of trigger happy commando's mowing down everyone.

I actually like the way they portrayed Europe during the war. The battles. The civilians. The military units. Etc.

I'll give Apocolypse now and thin red line a second look. I think I saw them as a teen and fell asleep during both.

Maybe now 20yrs later I'll appreciate.

Also, the Tom Hanks conspiracy is the weakest chit I've seen after flat-earth, stop with that garbage

SPR: story is kind of cheesy but GOAT, literal game changer battle scenes. No one's made a fukking Hogan's Heroes in 20 years since. You have to at least try to put in a gritty, brutal battle scene in every war movie now thanks to Spielberg.

On another note, I don't think people realize how fine of a balance Spielberg had to strike between "uber violent and brutal" and "schlocky grindhouse exploitation." Watch Hacksaw Ridge and you'll see what happens when you tip over to the grindhouse side. With Spielberg, there's an element of respect there. With Mel Gibson, it just feels like gore for shock value.

GOATpocalypse Now is still the GOAT war movie though. I can see how some people could find it boring for sure, but I personally bought 100% into the movie's stoned-out attitude and went along for the ride.

The cinematography is 25/10 and the entire atmosphere of it all is more immersive than any other movie I've ever seen. The glazed-eyed actors, the lazy, indulgent camera takes, the absurd plot - EVERYONE in that film was on the same wavelength. They were all high as phuck, and they basically made a war movie that smoked a J and got high as phuck. And YOU were there, on that little gunboat with Martin Sheen, getting high as phuck with them. I love it.
