Google won’t allow employees to return to the office for at least another year due to the pandemic, according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited anonymous sources. The decision by CEO Sundar Pichai, affecting some 200,000 employees and contract workers globally, would extend the search-engine giant’s remote-work order beyond that of most tech peers. Pichai was prompted, in part, by uncertainty around school reopening plans and the impact

Will be fun to watch the cities try to extend the reach of local income taxes. Soon they will be trying to tax people who work at a company that has a presence in the city even if the employee doesn't, as they'll have no other way to make money. After they've chased away any business who doesn't also need to be in a city through crazy taxation schemes like this, what will be next, tax food stamps?

Neighboors work for the state government and they have been ordered to work from home until 2021 at the earliest. Other business's too. Schools wont open until 2021 too. 2020 is suck a ****ing clown year.

Google HQ isn't exactly in a big city, it's still suburbia. Maybe our definition of "city" differs.

Tons of people are just movig out. Why pay $3k a month when u can WFH from Ohio??? Oh and s.v. firms can also hire ANYONE in the world for htat job - and cut your pay big time or let you go.

Expect those s.v. people losing their jobs en masse once firms realize they can just hire smarter, harder working people in Asia to create their spreadsheets and woke garbage.

I think Google overall is a horrible company, but glad they’re setting the precedent. The other FAANG companies are going to take notice.

not necessarily about the number of people IMO. Imagine those 200,000 people with an average income of $80,000 annually. Now we're talking $16 BILLION annually. That's the impact - not the number of people.

I live in Peoria, IL where they moved caterpillar global HQ to a suburb in Chicago a few years ago. The company spun it as "its only 600 people moving" when in reality those 600 people were some of the highest earning individuals in the city (think c-level, SVPs, etc).

This. Think of all the economic stimulation these folks are making. brb restaurants, grocery, entertainment, services, rent, real estate etc thats billions of dollars being spent.

twitter already said they are working from home forever if you want. I hope more companies go in that direction. Just lol at offices in 2020. also at paying 3000+ for a studio.

Hell you can in a ton of places now. My parents barely have cell signal but they have fiber now. I would check in the area you're wanting to live you might be surprised. There are a lot of rural fiber runs happening now.

I don't understand what you're getting at Op. The city is nice and all, but I imagine most hate the commute, hate the cost of living, and hate the traffic. I'm happy for those working at home. BRB playing PlayStation 5 in my underwear while occasionally checking emails

Yeah it's getting a lot better. I'm on the edge of my current city, have fiber, and our cell service is trash (sucks even in the neighboring town where my office is). I wouldn't call my area rural though, it's definitely suburbs.
