I mean, lifting is supplementary to performance.

Squatting heavy can be helpful in supplementing the performance of an athlete who is required to jump high, and/or run fast for short periods of time.

Also, if your focus is primarily lifting, and you're not supplementing another sport with lifting... Well, of course your high jump isn't going to be very high.Because at that point, you're just lifting for the sake of lifting.

Also. Your standards of athleticism seem to be ultra low. Thats if you want to be on the field, special teams for HS football, but that's not athleticism.

Think a wire is being crossed here

He's saying that just lifting will not do a huge amount of good in getting a great vertical unless you are training to increase your vertical. Like just because my squat is say 300lb it doesn't mean I have a great vertical.

Lifting would be a supplementing activity to increase leg strength and would aid in training for a good vertical, but i would still need to actually specifically train for a good vertical... if that makes any sense

I remember one of the greatest Norwegian heptathlon talents had a training philosophy that completely excluded lifting weights. She never really managed to achieve her potential, hard to say what the cause really was, but I remember her trainer was criticized a lot of excluding said work.

It's a cope mechanism. Most people lifting solely for strength and "not caring about aesthetics" have huge complexes.

I lift solely for aesthetics and am not feeling any inferior to someone who lifts for performance/strength. The Workout Programs section of the forum here is unbearable. It's basically all "SQUAT AND OATZ" and anyone who has a different philosophy/approach to lifting is an idiot.

From an aesthetic point of view I'd say he got a great upper body, but his legs are clearly lacking, it's almost looks like he skipped doing a proper leg day.

Most people can't even break a 5 second 40yd dash. Let alone have a 36" vert. Especially for never having done it before.

Those measurement sticks are too easy to cheat. If he's 5'8 with a true 36" vert, he should be able to grab the rim on a 10' basketball rim.

This all said, I feel like jumping and sprinting are more genetic than anything, you can improve but not by much. It's not that squats and deads aren't good, it's that there's not much room for improvement.

He'd jump higher with some heavy squats thrown in there. Heavy banded box squats are GOAT for increasing vert.

Quick educational comment for the noobs here.

NFL combine jump test is BS.
Yes some (exceptionally rare cases) of the athletes there are freaks and have true standing 40 inch verticals.
Just like some of them could bench press 225 for a legit 30 reps.

However..

The test isn't accurate. They basically measure your standing reach (non stretched ligaments)

Then apply the math to a jump where you're stretched fully.

There are videos on YouTube explaining this. You can get like up to 5 inches in increase by just poor measurements and biomechanical inaccuracies on this test.

An easy way to proof this is by looking at where the athletes head is compared to their standing height.

Here a video
https://youtu.be/e-CRbygNrkk

Man claims 43 inch vertical while barely having a 35 maybe less.
