For decades we were sold the idea that we needed to "starve the beast" (cut funding to regulatory agencies), that private industry was more efficient, that regulations were "anti-business". And that was pushed as a conservative right wing idea.

Then when they had enough rope to hang themselves instead of letting them die (see: Iceland) we were told that they were "too big to fail" and that the public purse had to be used to save them to avoid "systemic meltdown".

IMO if a company is "too big to fail" and would potentially take down the entire country then it is just too damn big and should be broken up like they did with Ma Bell. Instead we blew these monsters up to even more ridiculous size.

The majority want to live their life in relative comfort, reproduce, and contribute in some way to the community (meaning). Preferably with a broad degree of freedom in the personal sphere (choice of religion, philosophy, sexual preference, etc.)
