Do I Really Need to Go Keto/Crazy Low Carbs to Lose Fat?

I'm not a fitness expert and wanted to know your guys' thoughts on losing body fat and diet protocol. The long story short is I've seen a few instasloots rave about keto when they are on their cuts and I'm seriously wondering if it's necessary to get lean. I'm not trying for anything too crazy, just somewhere between 12 and 14% bf.

Thing is, I've tried keto before but cannot ****ing stick to it. I basically have to be a shut-in who can't go out on the weekend to adhere to the absurd dietary restrictions (brb, sweet potatoes or bananas are a no-go, wtf?). On top of that, I don't crave fatty foods like cheese and the diet gave me insane sugar cravings. I've been on a high-carb, low-fat diet and no longer have the cravings because the fruit quenches my sweet tooth and I no longer feel the need to eat donuts and whatnot like I used to. That said, I do think my body handles fat better than carbs because I've noticed I'm less lean on this high-carb diet than I was on a low-moderate carb diet (think around 100-120g of carbs per day) even though I'm eating roughly the same calories per day.

What do?

You need to be in a calorie deficit. You do not need to be in ketosis to achieve that, just eat less than you burn

No you don’t need to do keto or any specific diet to lose fat.

All you have to do is be in a caloric deficit. To be more specific, to lose fat and retain muscle you need to be in a caloric deficit while keeping protein high and lifting weights.

No, you just need to track your calories and ensure you're in a deficit to lose weight.

I mean, that's ultimately the only way that I know of, by experience.

Low carb dieting sucks for me personally, energy and strength levels drop through the fukking floor after just a few weeks. I dropped 30# between Christmas and May 1st this year without ever going below 150-200g of carbs a day.

I can't eat high fat for medical reasons. I've also found I feel best on the classic high carb, low fat, moderate protein diet for athletic performance. I do emphasize a lot of high volume, low caloric density food, but not fake chit--vegetables, fruit, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fat free Greek yogurt, fish. Minimal but not zero oil (I add it drizzled on after cooking vegetables). I also eat minimal sugar and processed food because it's not satiating and results in poor recovery.

I recently lost 6lb (in about 6 weeks) eating this way, counting calories and maintaining a 500-cal per day deficit. I felt pretty good. Fat was very low, around 40-45 grams a day--but I'm small, just under 130 pounds. Protein was around 115-135 grams, and carbs were ALWAYS above 200.

There was a guy in the UK who basically ate junk food every day but in smaller quantities and he ended up being ripped. I'm not sure if it's the healthiest approach but it proves it just calories in vs calories out when it comes to cutting.

This is what I don't get about keto-advocates. What's wrong with eating fruit (in moderation), whole grains, or vegetables with fiber but also a lot of starch? Keto did curb my appetite but I was sluggish all day and my micros were dog ****. Seriously, eating meat all the time isn't good for your health, and I'm saying this as a big meat eater. I get that you can get some stuff from spinach/kale, but you can eat those even on a low fat diet, plus whole grains have lots of other minerals, like zinc/potassium, that keto doesn't provide.

Nuts, which I'd have to eat a lot of to replace whole grains, are SUPER calorically dense too. If I replaced the 60g of oats I eat every morning with nuts, I'd literally add over 150 calories to my shake with less protein to boot. Plus, meat and fatty foods are expensive AF nowadays. Meanwhile, I can fill myself on whole grains, beans, and chicken breast for real cheap on a low fat diet.
