This is good news, but I definitely hope they get range time and safety classes. A gun in the home is very dangerous if you don't know how to safely use it, and pointless if you don't know how to keep it in operating condition. First time gun owners who don't have a family history with guns (taught by dad, etc...) worry me a bit.

I know the NRA is looked poorly upon in the minority community in many instances. Is there a group that is similar and specifically for African Americans? If not seems a good opportunity. I'm sure there is, I just haven't looked.

I have been reading (deep) into this. Here's an interesting snippet from a book I am reading (again) at the moment:

"Since the 1970s, more than three-dozen states have significantly loosened their restrictions on Americans’ ability to carry guns legally. The US Government Accountability Office estimates that there are at least eight million licensed concealed carriers, while a more recent estimate by the conservative think tank Crime Prevention Research Center places this figure at over 11 million. The increased popularity of gun carry reflects changes in why Americans say they want guns in the first place: one survey shows that Americans are much more likely to own and carry guns for protection today (48%) than they were in 1999 (26%). Gun owners and carriers are overwhelmingly men. In Michigan, men are four times more likely than women to have a permit to carry a gun. The racial breakdown of gun carriers in Michigan may also surprise some.White and Black residents are equally likely to have a permit, at 1 in 25 residents, and in Detroit and its suburbs, African Americans have higher rates of concealed carry licensees per capita than white residents."

The book links the concept of "decline" in America (there are many examples) with an increase in gun ownership, because each person feels they need to become a "citizen protector" - especially where "decline" is linked to the absence of policing.

I like examples like this - to show that the fundamental issue is one about gun ownership. education, training, responsibility etc.

I want my loved ones to be safe. A lot of my white friends are pro 2A but I definitely know a few Black and White folks that are anti guns. GF grew up in an anti-gun household and now her BF is pro-2A.

A lot of my family has served in the armed forces and/or law enforcement so it's always been a thing in my household.

Yeah you have to have a certain temperament to carry legally I think. Also you have to know how to de escalate knowing you have a piece of machinery that can kill in an instant.

I don't think stuff like NFAC is giving Black folks a positive light though.

If you go by background checks then yes. Federal background checks are up... I saw some stats that say 500%, record setting, never been higher. 50% of those background checks are NEW GUN OWNERS... and a more amazing stat is that of those new gun owners, 40% ARE WOMEN.

If you are into guns right now, you will see you can hardly buy ammo right now, it sells out instantly and is higher priced. Gun prices are sky rocketing from pre-pandemic, people are just happy to get one right now.

Can't go wrong with any of those. Starting out with a basic polymer frame 9mm is a good idea. The S&W M&P series is another good one to check and is about 150 dollars cheaper than the comparable Glocks

I got my CZ 97 in April. Gonna buy 500rd when I can and keep hitting the range.

No I don't have training and I'm not worried about that right now. I'm not an idiot, finger off the trigger and treating the gun like it's fully loaded will prevent accidents I assume 99.9% of the time. It helps that I was nervous so I'm very cautious
