Scientist claims aging is “optional” (how real is this?)

I read this article called:

This Scientist Believes Aging Is Optional

In his book, “Lifespan,” celebrated scientist David Sinclair lays out exactly why we age—and why he thinks we don't have to.

https://getpocket.com/explore/item/t...ng-is-optional

Cliffs-

-exercise
-fasting/confusing the body
-cold/temp variety

How legit is this? Obviously excercise is a big obvious helper.

I always though aging was something about carbon decay too.

Is it worth doing? Brb fasting.. brb laying in the cold snow to shock the body into producing “surtuins”

David Sinclair is a joke. His career revolves around making statements like this for attention, he's been doing for like the last 5 years. I remember reading about him in a local newspapers here saying the exact same thing like 5 years ago (he's from Australia) before he semi blew up after going on Joe Rogan. He looks like a oldcel, most likely a supplement shill and will say anything for a headline.

Any idea what's wrong about it? He seems to be claiming legit biology studies.

Just saw he was on Joe Rogan too. Is that bad?

You can prolong it but it will never be “optional” unless you find the 7 dragon balls and summon the eternal dragon shenron...

Everything dies. There’s no way of forever halting cell decay.

We already studying a lot of immortal organisms and how we can use their stem cells to help us live longer
Ultimately, we may be able to derive benefits to humans from research on phenomena such as dedifferentiation and regeneration in the simplest animals (Table 3); these studies may provide valuable information useful to overcome human diseases and other problems of aging. Stem cell research already has shown many advances, especially in mouse models of human diseases, and including the formation of various specialized cell types and even the generation of entire organs in vitro(reviewed in Sánchez Alvarado and Yamanaka, 2014; Tanabe et al., 2014) and possible genetic rejuvenation of aging muscles in mice in vivo (Sousa-Victor et al., 2014).Also, recent studies have put more emphasis on the influence of the stem cell niche, i.e., the physical microenvironment where stem cells reside in the organism, studied so far mainly in Drosophila and vertebrates (reviewed by Scadden, 2014), but noted also for sponges (Müller, 2006) and flatworms (Mouton et al., 2009). This will be an important consideration in future studies that utilize simple animals as models of stem cell function in human aging and disease. Thus, the knowledge gained from studying the simplest animals may someday provide keys for the extension of healthy human life to ages far beyond what is possible today.

uhh

that's not how that works

humans are not biologically immortal

could we modify ourselves to be? Maybe if we rly knew what we were doing , but probably not. More likely ull just give urself cancer fuking around. It's possible our organs cannot be that way.

Another issue is that billions of years of evolution produced humans that age. Lifespan is a selected trait. Should you be competing with your dad for mates and resources? lol it's maladaptive...boomers need to learn to die. Just fukin accept it. It's the cycle.

They had their fukin time.

People complain already at my age about aches and pains. I don't want to have any chronic illnesses for a very long time. If I live healthy to a hundred and then kick the bucket, that would be great.

Aging happens at the cellular dna level. Caps on the end of DNA strands called telomeres get shorter with every cell division cycle, oxidation also contributes. You could theoretically preserve and even possibly lengthen them with growth hormone administration and high intensity interval workouts designed to stimulate the body’s natural hgh production

But I agree with the point about confusing the body...even when dieting if you get use to eating certain foods your body stops metabolizing it effectively and you gain fat. Like tolerance to caffeine for example

They can't even use stem cells to grow back fking hair. They damn sure aren't gonna achieve immortality with them anytime in the foreseeable future.

Why? I mean honestly. Why? When you're 80, your only fuking worth as a human is to bring some added joy to your grandkids...There is no fuking point to ppl living this long. Honor and accept the cycle. We live and then we die. We grow old and stop being attractive and able to do things. In ancient times, the old would die of disease or be preyed upon by animals. We evolved aging. We should grow old. Men should go bald. Hair should go grey. Skin should get wrinkly. Tits should get saggy. People should become ugly and fuking die. It is exactly as it should be, and we try to fight it because of narcissistic greed. Old people refuse to fuking retire and fuking die.

Yeah this, its about preventing/delaying undue suffering from the effects of aging while maintaining as much "anabolicness" as possible.

It's fine. But don't you think billions of years of evolution matter? Haven't you wondered why we have lifespans? Imagine if you felt and functioned as well as u did when u were 20. Why would anyone mate with your offspring then? See the probem? Old people are supposed to die.

Everyone these days is so afraid of death. It is part of life. Our lifespans were selected traits. We live to these ages for a reason. If we lived forever and kept spawning babies, there would be nothing for our children.

I don't think biological immortality is a medically ethical thing to research. I don't think it is an admirable goal to attempt to extend the human lifespan. We're playing a dangerous game here.
