Any cycling brahs? Need advice bout getting a bike

I'm stuck between a cross hybrid and a fitness hybrid.

The main difference is that a cross hybrid has a front suspension, which makes it great for gravel roads or absorbing shocks.
Whereas the fitness hybrid is designed purely for on the road. The benefit of a fitness hybrid is that it's lighter and a lot faster.

Now i'm mostly going to use this bike for on the road going towards the gym.
But i also want to do recreational riding in the park, although the park roads are all concrete also.
So i'll seldom venture out on a soft gravel road.

Therefore a fitness hybrid seems to be the better choice. But many streets i ride on are also made of bricks.
And i occasionally go off a curb here and then, where the front suspension would make for a smoother ride.
However i worry the front suspension will make the bike heavier and harder to go forward on, especially on climbs.
What does the misc recommend?
Budget is around $700

I was thinking of the fitness hybrid Trek FX 2 or 3. (2 is a lot cheaper but people claim the 3 is a huge upgrade and worth the extra $250)
Or the Cross hybrid: Scott sub 40 because i pesonally love the look of the Scott series due to it's frame.

Final question: Do you guys get insurance on your bicycle? And is it worth it to get it on a bicycle that's around $700?
I live in a ghetto area where bikes get stolen a lot. So i worry having 2 good locks will not be sufficient.

Will rep. Will also rep if someone can link me to the official cycling thread.

lol. I remember this biking phase.

I got a cannondale hybrid cause they’re the same as trek and designed for taller people. make sure you maintain the chain and gears. sold it for a single speed/fixed gear (road bike with large tires) cause of less maintenance and lighter weight

get 32 tires or larger or you’ll change flats every second. 23, 25c will burst over a curb

This phase sucks. I can't afford 2 bikes so i gotta make sure i buy the right one. But i can't test ride it on the road either.
Worst is everything is sold out and expected date is 2021 to buy it again due to corona.
That said, i want to do the researching now so it's out of the way.

So you recommend a bike without front suspension cuz it's less maintenance?

I rode off road on my cannondale quick 4. pretty much the same as your bike

suspension will make the bike significantly slower on the road if that’s an issue. I had a bike computer that tracked speed and I averaged 18-20 mph on flat ground. climbing even on steep hills was easy. would cut through grassy and dirt covered parks no issue.

if you live where there are dirt roads and off road sections then get the cross bike. tire is a full 10 mm bigger

as for security, get a U-lock and put it through the back tire and the bike frame, since those are the most expensive parts of the bike. if you’re really scared get a lock for the seat post and front tire. anyone with no tools can take both of them due to the quick release

I'd go no suspension.

I was in the market for a road style bike, but since our roads are so rough went for a Devinci cyclocross bike which I am assuming is closer to the fitness bike you are looking at.

It's basically a road bike with a bit different geometry and the ability to use slightly wider tires. It's perfect for what I use it for. Rough ass paved and tar and chip roads with a healthy dose of sand from winter and pot holes.

I never wish for shocks.

Pls confirm other miscers.

I also want to get a bike for cycling on the road and park trails. Thinking of getting a hybrid off kijiiji for $150-200.

Can't believe all this need for a $500-$1000 bike when I remember my Walmart chit bike when i was a kid was fine.

I always had Walmart tier bikes. Bought a good one and it is really nice.

Most bike shops will not service Walmart bikes. I think it comes down to how much you will use it. If you want to make it a regular thing and use it a lot, get a good one imo.

No expert, just was in the same position three years ago and am glad I dropped some coin on it.

wouldn’t recommend Walmart bikes. a cheap hybrid is significantly faster than them

blew my mind the first time I rode a hybrid or road bike style frame, with the stiffness and light weight. it’s like the bike flys down the street and it’s easy to climb hills

Walmart bikes depreciate in value so quick too

OP how far is the gym from your house and how far of trips are you looking to make with the bike?

If its short distance trips it almost doesnt matter. I used to use this old single speed beach cruiser from the 80s, it was a heavy POS but pretty reliable and simple. It was slower than bikes built for speed but for a shorter distance what difference does it make.

Other guy is right about wider tires having less flat problems. Now I have a hybrid with 700cc tires and running into issues waay more than I ever had before with wider 26 tires with lower pressures.

I would say wider tires and simpler design will give you less things that could break or worry about going wrong. I would rather have better reliability with wider tires at a lower speed if it came down to it.

Just get a chit bike somewhere for your commutes, perhaps a decathlon bike.
And then get a proper roadbike for riding.

Look for a used hybrid bike with no suspension. Shouldn't be too hard to find. I'd sell you mine if you're in so cal

Suspension forks are not going to make the bike significantly heavier. A full suspension downhill bike with 200mm travel will be significantly heavier but for the two you compared, the weight will be negligible. You can also have forks that lockout (a knob you turn) which means there will be no suspension travel with that function enabled (some forks have this, some don't). Not sure why you're counting grams and worried about speed on a hybrid?

With that said, I ride downhill (full suspension), dirt jumpers (front suspension), bmx (fully rigid). The difference is how much you want your legs and arms to absorb going over rough terrain and drop offs. If you're primarily riding concrete then the fully rigid will be fine. If you're primarily riding brick that isn't smooth and will vibrate the heck out of you, then suspension will help.

The difference in prices for bike models will be the components. Different materials, weights, durability, tolerances, smoothness such as shifting and brake modulation, stronger axles, better chains, etc.

I'm always a road racer *******.

Front suspension kills the speed when you take a really long weekend ride (Over 200 km=124 miles) on black top and I always hate that.

BTW, also you are going to need a lot of money to retrofit your bike after the purchase.

The first parts which should go is always the saddle and the next you want an aerobar.

Eventually almost all the parts will go except the frame, LOL.

My first bike was MTB and the parts I put together costed three times that of the original price of that bike.

Good luck and safe ride, brother!!

When I was in Bolivia for the Death Road biking, they told me their bikes cost $3000. Not sure if it is true or not cuz I am not familiar with bikes. But I am also planning to buy one maybe end of the year or next year after my Eurotrip.

Most roads have a lane for bicycles where i live, so majority will be asphalt or flat concrete roads in the park. But i do encounter bricks when i ride out my neighborhood and other areas. It's not so bad on my current granny city bicycle with thin tires, so i imagine even for bricks, the fitness hybrid would be an improvement.

That said, i did see the cross hybrids with the front suspension lock out feature that you can use for climbs etc.
I just wonder how much heavier the paddling is and how much slower it is vs a bike without the suspension.
The weight difference is around 11 lbs for the bicycles. Don't know if that's a lot in bicycle terms.
I love the look on the Scott hybrid though, their frames look good.
Thanks for the great reply! Will rep on the r/c.

Those pictures look incredible Kaz! You're in great shape, awesome tan too!

How come you don't have any bicycle fenders? Or do you never ride it when it rains?
Also that saddle bag attachment is great. I think i'd have to install a rear back rack to put my backpack on for whenever i go to the gym.
Is the area where you live good for cycling? Weather looks great in those pictures.

I am someone who also commutes and jumps off/on curbs and i would deff recommend suspension. Its also nice for potholes/sewer caps/cracks in the road. When you get better and start riding harder and doing tricks its more useful too.

This is your first bike and your talking bout 11lb difference like your some elite rider just LOL. youre reading wayyyy to much chit online. Go to your LBS (local bike shop) and ride a few different ones in your price range and buy what you like. You'll learn on your way.

Also, if youre riding to work I would recommend wearing a different shirt for riding (no matter what you'll always get sweaty) and wet wipes or hand sanitizer to wash your armpits/back/balls after ride.

I ride a 29inch Norco hardtail.

Up your budget and get a good road bike around $1k. They're hard to find due to manufacturing slowing down from the rona but the supply is slowly picking up

Id definitely recommend upgrading the saddle. I just bought a new bike last weekend and did a 25 mile ride and it felt l like I got ass raped by ironman

I highly urge you to NOT get flatbar hybrid bikes and get a Road bike with dropbar handles.

also Do not get suspensions..they make riding too squishy on road and annoyingly bouncy plus add too much weight.

A road bike or an "endurance" road bike will let you go much faster and longer.

A road bike or an "endurance" road bike will let you go much faster and longer.

How come you don't have any bicycle fenders? Or do you never ride it when it rains?

1. How come you don't have any bicycle fenders? Or do you never ride it when it rains?

I check weather forecast very closely and when I'm convinced it's gonna rain beforehand I change my plan and run under the highway course instead of cycling. If the rain ambushed me after I already start my long ride then any fender is useless for my body and clothes will be drenched anyway.

Besides, road racers aren't designed to be equipped with fenders.

The saddle bag is for spare tubes, puncture repair kit, a tool set and a tail lamp for a return trip in the dark. (you'd be surprised at knowing how often you get flat tire.)

For other larger items like extra wears, extra food and water I use Deuter's backpack with its unique air comfort system, which has an arch to keep my back from directly contacting with bag so air could flows freely during the ride. So no sweat, literally.

The frame has two water bottle holders and a portable air pump.

Also better equip your bike with clips and wear cleats for more efficient pedaling.

From where I live (near Tokyo)I have access to more than three major rivers and sea coasts with decent cycling roads. (some of them, I use as my jogging course too as you already knew.) One of them extends over 100 km (62 miles). Those courses offer me over 150-200 km(93-124 miles) round-trip ride and large part of them I could enjoy the scenery without worrying about any cars or traffic signals.

Again, good luck and safe ride m'friend! *bow*

I really hate iphone. I typed a long message, jumped to another browser to copy paste a pic and the iphone refreshed bbcom erasing my message.

Dont get a $700 bike.

Go on craigslist and keep refreshing every day. Get a bike for $100-125. Get a big chain, u lock or cable lock. Run a $5 walmart cable lock through the seat and back wheel, the big lock through the frame. This will be your daily rider you can lock and walk away from.

Buy the expensive bike. Only take this bike out in situations where you can see the bike the entire time. Cable lock it outside the window of the cafe or coffee shop. If your gym allows bikes to be brought in at odd hours do that.

It takes 10 seconds to cut a cable lock, 30-60 seconds to break a chain or u lock. If you don’t take my advice you will come back to a missing bike. This is one of those dirty secrets the bicycle industry doesn’t address because frankly it drives their business.

PS both my bikes are super lightweight road bikes with a neck extender installed so im not bent over like a tryhard lance armstrong wannabe killing my lower back (no offense to the bros into that i just dont give a damn about aerodynamics over comfort).

No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.
