Tradie brahs explain this to me

How can something like this, that's drilled into a wooden beam at the ceiling with only 2 screws, hold 1000lbs?
The little circular edges around the screw and the wood itself, is minimal in terms of areas between the wood and the scews.
How does it not fall off when all that weight is pulling downwards?
Planning to hang up my heavybag soon that's 190 lbs

wood is surprisingly strong, even though it's inherently inconsistent

force exerted on the head of a bolt in that direction is in it's strongest orientation (bolts can stretch while retaining strength and even the chittiest have tensile strength >50kpsi)

having the bag hanging from a shackle in the middle of a bracket held on by 2 bolts means you're distributing force to a larger area compared to just bolting it straight into the beam

that said, 1000lbs is probably a static theoretical load and might not be possible with inconsistent chinese hardware of questionable quality

In theory a 3/8th's grade 8 bolt can hold up more than half of your 4,000 pound car



Doesn't mean I'm going to test it. Lol @ trusting screws in wood, it'll hold 190lbs but I wouldn't be taking naps under it boyo



For that matter I don't trust wooden door frames you brahs do pull ups on either

My pull up bar has six 6-inch thick screws into the concrete wall. The only way it comes down is if the entire wall breaks off.
I was just curious bout the theory behind the screws strength.

Doing pull ups from the door frame is probably safer than the ones with a spring that you put between a door. I seen a lot of people fall off those.

The bars I trust, I trust steel which is why I do pull up movements on my power cage.

I believe most door frames are held in place by small smooth wood nails, it's them I wouldn't trust lol


The hinge/attachment you posted looks to be thick enough gauge for heavy weight, the only thing suspect is using 2 tapping screws, 4 screws would make me feel a lot better personally.

Might be worth the peace of mind to run to your local hardware store and buy some quality wood screws. The hardware provided with these things isn't usually the best quality.

True story, I won an Engineering 101 class challenge freshman year. Challange was make the strongest cube with 20 Popsicle sticks. Tested with a tinius olsen axial load tester. I laminated 4 popsicle sticks into posts with simple wood glue, making 4 posts for the corners out of 16 Popsicle sticks. Sanded them smooth/square and made sure they were identical in length. It was roughly a half a square inch of material, birch most likely. It "failed" at ~4000 lbs with a perfect 45 deg shear fracture, and was still holding ~2500lbs in failure as it began to crush. Moral of the story? Wood is surprisingly strong when loaded properly. And that metal is not going to give out for ~1000 lbs static.

There's the traditional heavy bag and a new thing that's popular is the aqua bag.

The benefit is you can put it outside since it's weather/rain/sun proof. And it's easier on the joints.
The aqua training bag come in various sizes but the 190lbs one is $200.
But it's the exact same water buoy as the Taylor Made buoy. (the taylor made logo is even on the bag, it just doesn't have a fancy paint job).

I got the Polyform buoy which is basically the exact same thing but from a different brand for $95.
So if you want an aqua bag, i recommend not buying the ''brand'' one and get a water buoy instead.

1000 pounds is probably based on the swivel itself not on the fastening method.
It'll hold 190 pounds with those lag bolts.
You might have to retighten the bolts after a while of punching it.
Predrill the holes around 1/8 to 3/16 in the beam to keep the wood splitting when you screw them in.

this is a bolt



if you put "lag" in front of it, it has a smooth piece. it is lag bolts and lag screws.

bolts over screws if you scared bc a screw can work out over time. its code most places to use a lag bolt when connecting a deck to a house for example.

bolts and screws are stronk as fuk

timber is stronk as fuk axially for what we would all use it for. at spans greater than 10 feet it becomes noticeably weak


when i put up my heavy bag i put a header up first bc i didnt trust my screw placement. so i screwed in a board accrossed 3 or 4 joists like, then connected the swivel.

This is an often overlooked but key factor. Any joint you are making involving wood and screws/bolts that is going to bear load should have a pilot hole drilled. Solid wood is extraordinarily strong generally speaking but one split in the right direction and that all goes away.

Tradie Answer: Bolt that chit and it won't move (as other miscers said)

Engineer Answer: Screws spread the weight and force of an object over a longer distance. The wider the threads are, and the smaller the distance between them, the stronger it will be.

I hung up my punching bag with bolts I bought from Home Depot, and the first thing I did was hug and jump on it, and it didn't move. Typically unless you are buying from a legit company in the US, the screws and bolts you will get with your product will be "Chineseum". These are lower grade parts that come overseas, and will notoriously snap off on you when you apply too much force, and "screw you over" when you now need to back out a snapped off screw in whatever you were drilling into.
