How many grams of sugar per day is the limit for optimal health?

I see conflicting advice online. Some experts say no more than 36 grams of added sugar for men, some say 50 grams. Some say a

percentage like no more than 10% of your diet should consist of added sugars. But the average american consumes around 76 grams of

sugar per day. How strict are you guys with your sugar consumption? And what is your daily set limit and how do you keep track?

as little as possible since it promotes inflammation. I don't count it but avoid it.

30 grams max if I were actually tracking it. Used to mainly be coffee + yogurt.

Just found this one the past week. Hard to find much in this brand locally for some reason and it's my favorite.

Ideally yeah, but it's kind of hard nowadays. Food manufacturers add sugar in everything and it adds up.

Damn that's bad lol. A bottle of coke has like 40 grams of sugar plus caffeine. All that at 8pm at night is gonna mess up your health and sleep too.

On that ride. Gotta cut it out.

Not at night, but in the afternoon. Cola on ice is so good. Quick energy hit too.

Used to keep it to only 2 or 3 of the teeny cans a week roughly.

It can't be as bad for you as the beer as far as calories. Sugar is no bueno for inflammation and caffeine keeps you awake. You might try caffeine free and see if you still enjoy it the same.

I have avoided refined sugar and high fructose corn syrup for the last 30+ years. I'm 50. Fruits in moderation are ok but refined sugar is poison IMO.

I'm serious. I'm not a dietitian or fitness expert by any means, but I think it would best to cut out the soda entirely.

I think fruit sugars are fine, but not too much at once (like pure fruit smoothies) and in moderation. Too much fruit can be bad for you.

hmmm....but doesn't more sugar intake increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer, etc?

And I eat a bowl of cereal in the morning which probably has between 25 to 30 grams of sugar total(cereal sugar + milk sugar), is that

bad? Am I putting myself at risk of diseases eating that much in the morning?

I try and stay under 50 grams a day. Most of that comes from fruit.

Ive heard it as 36 g NATURALLY occurring sugar. ZERO gramsaddedsugar. Refined/added sugar is pretty much a toxin

In some respects, yes, drinking the fully leadedcokeis better than drinking the same amount of beer but it all depends on how you choose to look at it. If at all possible and you have access to it, buy mexican made coke. They use ACTUAL sugar (cane sugar) rather than refined sugar (sugar that has all it's molasses removed so you need more sugar to get the same amount of sweetness)

1 molecule of caffeine will ALWAYS result in the production of 10,000 other stimulant hormones, some of which are adrenaline which is why caffeine is so effective (unless you take a beta blocker because its method of action is to block adrenaline production at low levels of activity)

Yes sugar increases the type 2 diabetes risks. Over time, high sugar (or simple carb intake) destroys the beta cells int he body. Beta cells are to secrete insulin and insulin is the key to open cells to allow nutrients inside. When we eat like chit, the beta cells are constantly working producing insulin and over time, the insulin they produce, becomes less and less sensitive and no longeropensthe cell up anymore so the nutrients can no longer enter the cell. And this is when Type 2 diabetes starts

Weight bearing activity and IF are the best ways to help with insulin resistance and increasing your insulin sensitivity but it certainly doesnt mean that you can lift weights and do IF just so you can eat lucky charms all day

This. Activity level, how much active muscle you have and your regular diet are probably the biggest factors. Some people probably get away with more than others though

If i may ask, what is your professional background that backs up your reasoning behind this? I am by no means saying that you have to be a dietitian (because I am not one myself) to make this claim, but it sure helps

Also, how old are you?

What I meant was (maybe i just wasnt clear), what is your reasoning for saying that (for example): you CAN go above 36g of added sugar per day (since you take in 100g). Are you basing this purely off anecdotal data and applying it to the entire population of people who are 75% overweight/obese (In the US at least) and are already insulin resistant?

Nothing like rampant sugar intake to keep the blood sugar stable, manage your appetite, avoid diabetes, inflamation, and to keep your teeth from rotting.

Like anything "it depends". You don't need it and if you have a lot and often your gut bacteria adapts to that. Percentage of total calories makes sense.

And I do think it matters if you are very active and adapted to burning through a lot of fuel. Random- I think someone who trains like a Tour rider or Olympic swimmer can likely eat a Snickers bar everyday no worries. They have the physical adaptations and activity level to burn it up so their body isn't overwhelmed with it and doesn't have to try and convert any of it to fat storage.
