How did you decide which branch of engineering to go into?

Was it money? Job market? Some sort of fascination from childhood? Something you were naturally good at? A dream you were pursuing? Or any combination of these. Curious how you made your decision since engineering is so broad.

Got into electrical engineering during high school, soldering together radios and vacuum tube amplifiers and that chit.

My dad worked on an electronics assembly line, so that may have been where that initial interest came from. But he's also huge into fixing motors and dirtbikes and chit and those just never grabbed me the same way.

Money aside: if you let me do anything, I'd be a history major. I like the surface-level applications part of engineering, but the deep dives into the math and theory bore me to chit. I'm really not well cut out for it in the grand scheme of things - I approach it more like a hobbyist who rices up his Honda or overclocks his gaming rig rather than a scientist.

My school had a "great exodus" of Mechanicals. Went to civil. Glad I did. Work in probably the most lucrative industry for civil's now (not that it's lucrative, just more than working on buildings, transpo, water, etc).

i started getting fat in middle school, and it pushed me into learning about nutrition which ultimately is biochemistry. i excel at chemistry and consistently demonstrated that during every chemistry class i had. i would be best at something like chemical, biological or biomedical. but then again, EE, comp eng and comp sci is what's supposed to be lucrative right now.

Mechanical was the coolest and most diverse imo

- Civil engineering is too bureaucratic and slow, so many codes & standards, government always involved
- Electrical has too much math, and would require me to do alot of coding(i'm good at coding now but at the time I didn't want to deal with it)
- Chemical engineering was a hell no for me, job market isn't that great at all
- Aerospace engineering, basically a mechE degree with a few course changes, mechE is more diverse. An employer will still higher a mechE for an aerospace position
- BME, hell no lol
- materials science, the only materials class I ever took made me want to blow my head off, couldn't give a phuck about all the stupid graphs and chit I had to remember

Decided not to go into engineering and regretted it forever. Do electrical engineering with a CS double major. Thank me later.

A lot of my masters research fell under BME, so I've seen that side of the house. It's very tough to get a job in the field without a PhD.

Most engineering fields, like say manufacturing CPUs, have a lot of work available for bachelors level graduates. You have the chip designers, who are invariably masters or PhDs with absolute 500 IQ galaxy brains, but then you have design verification which is like programming and is usually a masters or bachelors role, you have test design which is usually a bachelors level position, fail analysis which is a bachelors role, applications which is a bachelors role, layout which is a bachelors role...

Basically, the design jobs are PhD level and the error checking and manufacturing support roles tend to be bachelor level. When you manufacture tens of millions of CPUs in a billion-dollar fab plant, there's plenty of meat on that bone for entry level employees to bite onto.

Biomed design usually works with small teams of senior designers, and they produce very complex, high quality chit in very small quantities. All PhD design roles, few bachelors error checking/manufacturing roles. It's a small field dollar wise anyway, one with few companies that have few customers. VERY hard to find anything with a bachelors or even a masters.

As far as majors, CS is famous for hiring anyone with a pulse, and an EE or MechE bacehlors graduate who knows their chit should have no problem latching on somewhere in a normal, non-Rona market.

connection. got an internship at a start up with like 20-25 ppl and just filled a need there. software qa automation engineer. honestly that’s like barely crossing the engineer line

I had no experience in the role but started with a smaller task. they ended up hiring a more experienced engineer and quality assurance person.

learned so much from them. ended up dropping out of school and getting myself into full time. only been 5 months full time but pretty sure this is my career

for more background I went to school for comp sci - money and just being technical with computers since I was young

Why not pick up the EE as well to max out?

CS is an easy major so it is good to pair it with something more technical imo.

You could do Math/CS as well if ur shooting for a google job.

Didn't have life-long dream to be an engineer, so I was practical and chose the branch with the widest range of job market, Mechatronics



You wanna make 100k/month, get whatever engineering B Sc. degree then get hired in an oil and gas logistics company. I feel it's more lucrative than banking

It isn't a starting salary and it needs to be at one of the top companies (ex: Halliburton, or Schlumberger where I interned) but you get there eventually. Hell, you don't even need an engineering degree to work on a rig (not a tradie job, rig workers/supervisors are well taken care of by the company) and you'd make 100k/year within 2 years.

We've had oil drilling miscers post here before and confirm this btw

I mean, I can make 100k/year with a job switch in my industry. But 100k/month is like exec VP level at a largish company, and they are all in their late 50's or above.

feels bad manei’m studying bme right now, so i can’t speak much on jobs. Got in because i was originally premed, but then i decided med school wasn’t for me. if i were to choose anything else though it would be neuroscience or sports medicine
