The scary bit is not getting your eyes cut open or the procedure itself. Its the after bit that's scary AF. Normal dry eyes is just very slight discomfort. LASIK dry eyes can be bad enough that your vision actually goes to chit, because there's usually a layer of mosture covering your eye, making it nice and smooth. Without any moisture, it gets so dry, its just the rough surface, and your vision goes to chitsville, and you think you're going blind. Also, there'll be mornings that you open your eyes, and it hurts like fukking chit. The only way to describe it is like demons has been biting on your eyeball the whole night. There'll be times you're convinced that your flap reopened, and you're fukked, but usually its dry eye. See your doctor immediately either way.

All this will last 2-5 years. Don't believe them when they tell you a year. It get exponentially better 3 months in, then 6 months. A year in, you'll still have lingering effects. 2 years its mostly gone. 3 years you should be fine.

Use your eye drops as prescribed. If you use too much, your eyes gets used to the drops and stop producing tears. Too little, and its painful as fuk. Never ever touch your eye after the procedure. The first time I've touched it was 3 years after, to remove a stray eyelash. You can't even rub it at all. Any issues, drop everything on the spot, and go see your doctor. You'll use drops up to a year, maybe more, after surgery.

Don't do it if you have anxiety issues. You are right, losing sight is one of the most fukked up feeling in the world.

Use the best doctor money can buy, with max number of good reviews. The best will follow up 2 years after surgery, with quarterly appointments. Mine went up to 1.5 years. You'll think its a pain in the arse, but you must do it. There's always the dread that you walk in, and your vision deteriorates. Mine was 80/20R and 40/20L initially due to dryness, and I felt like chit, because it wasn't 20/20. Ended up with 20/10 R and 20/15 L, so it CAN (not guaranteed) get better than even normal human eyesight after awhile (my wife is 20/10 both, but she's 100% natural, some people just have better eyes naturally)

There's an alternate surgery called PRK, where they scrub off the front of your eyeball. Your vision will be chit for 3 months, but you will heal without a flap scar, consider that heavily.

They can cut a flap via laser (femtosecond) or mechanically (keratome). Mine was mechanical. There's pros and cons to both, do your own research. Laser is typically better, because they can fuk up and mis-cut mechanically, but your chances of hazing due to laser is higher. Choose your poison and go for it. Don't be a pussy and choose laser just because mechanical sounds chit - its not, you don't feel chit.

The procedure itself is *very* uncomfortable, but not painful. Dumb kunts gave me vallium at 10, first procedures started at 1030, I was dead last at 430, and the vallium was long gone by then, and I was on full time panic mode. The worst bit is not the laser, or the cutting, or even them touching your eyeball. Its the light they shine into it, makes it extremely uncomfortable. It feels weird, but straight after, you can see well without glasses, which is weird AF. They give you these eyeshields to put on, and tell you to leave it on for a day. I recommend 2 days, because some dumb kunts (myself) sleep with an eyeball digging into the pillow, causing chit dry eye. The elation at being able to see without glasses initially is the GOAT feeling.

Its worth it in the end, less headaches, more freedom, no glasses fogging, laser sharp vision all the time, being able to see in the shower, when you wake up, in the pool, etc.
Jesus Christ maybe I'll just stick to glasses and contacts.
No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.

Is it worth it?
Despite a poor recovery, non optimal result in one eye which also has some dry eye.
I would still recommend. 100% srs.

Not having to worry about contact lenses and glasses really makes a huge difference in quality of life. By the time your eyes deteriorate tech will already be on a totally different level. Its also cheaper than contacts in the long run.

I did prk. the recovery is longer, but there is no flap and you preserve more stromal tissue. This can also come in handy when you need a revision surgery later on when you're older

lol don't do that... that's so bad for your eyes, and plus you might develop GPC or an allergy to your contacts not allowing you to wear them anymore.

look into PRK or something instead

I got it in military , it made my eyes feel more dry for like a year and more sensitive to sunlight. now they feel ok and my vision is still rally good it 's been about 3 or 4 years and my vision still really good. I say yes it's worth it, my vision before was real bad and I used contact lenses, it feels great being able to wake up and not go thru the contact lenses BS

There's a newer one called smile. Theres no flap and only a tiny cut is made. Less side effects or something. I might look into myself
A young bull and an old bull were standing atop a hill looking at a bunch of heifers in a field below.

The young bull says "Let's run down this hill and fuk one of those heifers."

The old bull replies "No. Let's walk down there, and fuk them all."

when I did it they gave me some gas it made me high and I thought the doctors were really funny. then something kinda brushes your eye they but they put numbing eye drops so you don't really feel it , they put a contact lenses over your eyes you have to wear for a couple days while your eyes are healing , it's not painful unless the contacts come out then it will feel like you have sand in your eye (which did happen to me because was trying to mess with the Pokemon go game outside while it was windy. this is when it first came out and I was getting into it and got addicted for about 4 months)

This guy's channel is pretty cool and could offer another perspective.

For the second video justskip to exactly 4:00 minutes in where he answers a subscriber's question of "Why do eye doctors perform LASIK and PRK on others if they do not get it themselves?". For reference he does not choose to get it and uses contacts. One reason he lists is that with contacts he has 20/15 vision and LASIK can often at best produce 20/20.

Make sure you have a third party doc determine if you're a prime candidate for it.

My mom's a medical malpractice lawyer...she refuses to have the surgery done herself. I have one friend who regrets it, he's almost night blind now. He can't drive at night because of the halos/starbursts. Everyone else i know that had only complications were dry eyes.

Look into Ortho-K contact lenses. They're hard contacts you can wear at night and then the following day you'll have 20/20 vision with no contacts or glasses. I've been wearing them for almost 5 years. I absolutely love them. It's basically like having temporary lasik every night.

He makes good points, but that's complete bullchit. I'm 20/15R and 20/10L, not only measured by the LASIK clinic, but the spectacle shop in the mall (I wanted to get sunnies) I know of people who done LASIK with double 20/10. Most people I know that did it end up with at least 20/15 in one eye.

This is good advice. My night blindness lasted 3 months. I knew I was cured when I walked from one end of the house to the other end in pitch darkness to get my back scratcher at 3am.

Halos and starbursts were cool initially, then very annoying, made night driving extremely difficult. The worst bit lasted for 3 months, then the halos rapidly reduced in size. 1 year in, you can sort of see halos within the lightbulbs itself, its hard to explain, like you know you're seeing a halo, but its so small. 2 years in, barely there, now its completely gone.

OP, fcuking do this surgery, it's easily one of the biggest game changers you'll fcuking have. Not only did I do it, but I payed all of it up front. I went for a free consolation, basically a 2 hr procedure to see if i fit the bill for lasik. My procedure was 5 grand with everything and i think we agreed to be safe and wait for it to show up on their end that i payed or some chit i can't remember but i payed 2500 the first day, and 2500 the second day on the quick follow up. I did this so i won't be getting any calls, no messages, etc. I did my chit in Southern Cali and the place i went, i was able to drive home the same afternoon that's how good the doc was. He had hundreds of reviews that people wrote down for him, videos on his results, etc, kinda like an intro to the whole thing.

My whole chit was laser btw, no blades.

Plus they hooked it up with a 50 dollar cheesecake factory card, all i had to do was pull up and tell a small group about my experience. 2 things tho OP

1) DONT BE CHEAP. I payed 5 grand and this place had hundreds of reviews/receipts. If you need to save money do it, cause once you get it you got it.
2) don't slack up on the eye drops, this is the difference between you getting 20/20 vision(or in rare rare rare cases, much better than the sight you have now), and having to redo the procedure all over again cause you were on that laggin time cuhz

I didn't watch it but saying lasik can only do 20/20 is bullchit. Not only did my lasik come out with me seeing 20/15, but it was the same image months later during another follow up. And once your eyes are fixed with lasik, idk if even the docs know but taking lutein and Zeaxanthin will help with your eye health and more than likely(don't quote me read the article n research n chit) preserve it from natural breakdown. If you're talking a multi more than likely you'll have Lutein and Zeaxanthin in the pill. they'll run you prolly 20-30 for both

Wife had PRK done recently (4 weeks ago). No flap (she is seemingly unable to have things touch her eye), but the healing process is protracted vs lasik. Back to 20/20, she doesn't have to wear glasses (was an arse ache during gym/runs). Would recommend/10.

The horror stories are enough to push me away. Even just the routine somewhat short term negatives sound awful.

Been wearing glasses for like 20 years at this point and they've never bothered me. I can see the appeal for contact brahs though since that daily hassle is probably annoying.

You'll use drops up to a year, maybe more, after surgery.
This reads like anxiety and illogical fear. I had severe dry eyes to the point it felt like sandpaper when I moved them. My vision didn't go bad and at no point did I think I was going blind. Not once did I ever think I dislocated my flap. A dislocated flap will severely affect vision and be painful as heck. There are many risk factors for dry eyes and I was expecting this as I had researched it before hand.

Everyone is different, age, gender, genetics, lifestyle, etc all play a role on how well you will do. After a year I did not have lingering effects. My sandpaper eyes went away after a couple months. At around 6 months the dryness was mostly gone. After 8 months I forgot I even had Lasik. Eyes don't stop producing tears because of eye drops, they stop producing tears because Lasik severs the nerve endings that signal to your brain that your eyes are dry. I've also talked to people who fared significantly better than I did. Everyone has a different experience.

OP: Do your research. The clinics that sell you a Lasik package are like car salesmen. They only care about a sale and will try to only tell you what you want to hear. I was told I was a good candidate for both basic and custom wavefront lasik. Thank goodness after research I didn't go with basic because I very well could have end up with terrible night vision. Custom wavefront costs significantly more, but it's significantly better and these are your eyes. It will affect you for the rest of your life. After a few years I still have 20/20 in my left eye and 20/15 in my right.

If you do go for it, research your surgeon! The #1 controllable determining factor of your outcome is the quality of the surgeon. There is a lot that can go wrong during the procedure so you don't want an inexperienced surgeon doing the procedure.

Tips: Tape the glasses to your face the first couple of nights. They are there to prevent you from rubbing your eyes and moving the flap when you sleep. I actually pulled my glasses off my face while sleeping and started rubbing my eyes but luckily I woke up before something bad happened. Eye drops have preservatives that can cause stinging and pain when used to much. I had to switch to a preservative free eye drop and my pain went away.

It's basically like having temporary lasik every night.
its not hard to think that your eye has a million of nerves on it and if you cut something up, you are gonna damage the structure of your eye, irregardless if you get good vision. its common sense, u do lasik, cut up your eye and nerves that supply tears will die, then u get dry eyes. its a trade off. dry eye is the most basic because your servering the nerves off your eye (lucky if you have lots of it, bad if you have already less of it), if youre unlucky you get more complications.

i believe in the future there will be a better solution (encouraging growth of shortening the eye), we grow myopic because our eye grow longer as it adapt to our short distance activity like reading and using the pc.

Just get it done.

I had PRK while I was in the Army about 15 years ago. I do not regret it at all. There was a couple of days of pain but it is well worth it. I am old so need reading glasses now but the last 15 years of no glasses or contacts was worth it.

My son had PRK when he was in the Army about 3 years ago. He had a similar experience and is happy he got it.

My daughter had LASIK last year and she was so happy. She had dry eyes for a bit, but is very happy she got it. She was nervous like you but again, it is worth it.
Yeah, I'm old, been here for years before posting. Son posts as well.

did her doctor recommend she take vitamin c? It was suggested for me since it can strengthen the cornea and speed up healing. I take 1 gram vitamin c everyday anyways though

Had the touchless(I guess PRK?) like 10 years ago. Never experienced the horror stories some of you lads tell here but I was sort of handicapped because of how bright and blurry everything was for the first 4 weeks. After that about the 2 month mark went in for the test and vision was 80% of perfect, 6 months later vision was 160% of normal(1.6x better than 20/20). Now gone back to about 20/20ish.

No pain, a little bit of that yellow residue forming around the eyes that the doc gave me cream for and a decade later still consider it the best investment BY FAR I have ever made and will probably ever make in my life. I'd happily pay $40 000 instead of $4 000 to go from -7 to perfect vision again. People who never went this deep into minus will not understand how utterly debilitating it is. You're literally blind without glasses/contacts.
