The NBA ratings are going down relative to other sports except baseball which has been in free fall for years anyway. You can argue why it is people have quit watching but the simple truth is that they have. Personally, I think it is a mixture of 3 different things.

1 - The way games are officiated. The amount of free throws hasn't gone up that much but the type of fouls leading to them is completely different. Almost every player now tries to sling the ball at the goal the moment they are touched to draw a foul. Also the offensive players leaning into the defender to initiate contact is somehow now a defensive foul.

2 - The focus only on major markets and superstars. It's true that the major markets get the best ratings but when every superstar in your league colludes to play for one of 4 teams it ruins the competitive balance and makes fans of small market teams, who would watch the NY/LA teams as well, check out completely

3 - Catering to "twitter/instagram fans". They are only engaged for the off the court drama and politics. Catering to them is a massive misstep. This is the reason why the NBAs political stuff is so in your face. They think these are the fans but they aren't. They don't go to or watch the games

nobody in my socioeconomic circle watches BLM-Ball. it's a boring game of a bunch of 7 footers dunking in a 10 foot rim. raise the rim to 15 feet and cut the games in half and allow tackling and maybe it might be interesting.

Caving to the twitter activists is always a surefire way to alienate actual fans and people who just want to enjoy something. The twitter activists don't even support any of the things they want to influence, they just get off on the power trip and move on to the next twitter mob headline.
