If they were equally qualified and you already had a majority white work force, then yeah it would would make sense to hire the black woman for diversity. It would only be a problem if you hired someone that was less qualified solely because of their race or gender, because that would the definition of racism.

If I were the hiring manager, and all things being equal, I would choose based on energy, willingness to work, and how well spoken they were
If the black lady was younger, had more energy, showed a positive attitude vs an older male that seemed stale, more ego, etc

If everybody was leaning for the white guy, it seems like the candidates weren't even, and a questionable decision was made.

If they were split though, I don't see the big deal with going with somebody who would help out with diversity.

Big corporates love them some 'diversity'. If you have a vagina or a darker skin tone then you are given every opportunity that a white male wouldn't get. If you have both, and you're not complete dogchit at interviewing then you have a huge advantage.

Some corporates will decline a whole batch of CVs from a Recruiter, if that batch doesn't meet their diversity ratio (3/5 of every CV MUST MEET DIVERSITY REQ etc). BRB must find 3 token female/POC candidates for every role or you need to explain why not.

It's kind of wild.
