Are chiropractors legit scam artists?

Went to one per my attorneys recommendation due to being in a car accident.

Dude is full of chit and cracks my back/neck for literally 2 minutes then goes on a rant every other time about how he can feel the pressure/tension being relieved off my spine and how he apparently can tell all this by touching my neck LOL.

Then I sit on some massage bed for 5 minutes and leave. Wtf kind of scam is this

After my shoulder surgery I had to go to physical therapy. It was unbelievably pointless. What ever they told me can be internet searched for no $$. And half the time the duck was trying to get me to buy their very own Chinese mass market whatever the fukc therapy that sht is thing. The best advice was from my chad surgeon ......don't use that arm for much of anything for at least 6 months, first weeks, months, don't even use it.

A chiro reduced my compensation curve from 18 degrees to 11 degrees. But a chiro wont fix the vast majority of issues in one visit. Physical joint manipulation is not aone and donething. Hell, An Rx regiment isnt either. Gotta take the full course of antibiotics for them to be fully effective. But I get it. They arent actual doctors and some people dont trust them, especially the neck adjustments. Anecdotally, I am a believer but I also know that there is an inherent risk with each adjustment

It totally depends where. The majority of what they learn in school is bunkum, and if you see a chiropractor treating most diseases, it's a scam. But in many areas, chiropractors essentially do physical therapy. Which isn't a scam, except insofar as they'd be "scamming" insurance companies that only cover a few physical therapy visits but do cover chiropractic care.

My ex girlfriend's sister is a mid-wife, and she shared how a chiropractor told a pregnant woman to get a C-section. That's like your barber giving dental advice.

I used to know an insurance fraud investigator. He told me once that he'd never investigated a chiropractor and NOT found fraud.

I dono op.

But what I do know is that when I stopped doing warm up drills and basically kept active (ie 10k steps a day) - not only did Insave time, but also my pains and niggles vanished..

Has anyone actually made full recovery from say pt or chiro etc? Surely the pain went away by itself over time.. lol

Yes is the simple answer - if you take that what they claim to do fixes more than just a localised pain.

Claiming they can fix medical issues by manipulating spinal nerves is false...

Corrective exercise specialists definitely work. Physios should incorporate more weight training with certain patients but I understand it's a tender subject working with injured population. Chiros have more law suits for disabling people or killing them than Cardi B-s body count. Fukt if I let a charlatan manipulate my spine with force.

I'm just about to start PT school and find this topic interesting for obvious reasons. I think a good therapist needs a solid understanding of exercise and programming in addition to clinical techniques.

Most non contact MSK injuries should resolve themselves in a matter of weeks. A good therapist should identify a suitable point of entry to rehabilitation to prevent detraining and further loss of adaptations (strength/hypertrophy etc) as well as educating the patient on the rehab process and promoting confidence and self efficacy. Manual therapies can be useful in providing short term symptom resolution to help kickstart the rehabilitation process but prolonged use or telling patients they need weekly/monthly adjustments, massage, prayers etc is unethical and can lead to the patient becoming psychologically dependent on the therapist.

Most of this is based on the biopsychosocial pain model which barbell medicine do an excellent job of explaining in their articles and podcasts.

This.

For most people, some basic regular exercising and stretching are the first lines of defense against most of the issues they'd seek to be fixed. Can't tell you how many people I've come across from their mid-20's and up who bitch about having "back problems" who visit a chiroproactor once or twice a month that would be far better off doing some regular back lifting workouts like high rep deadlifting.

For real injuries that go beyond just working out alone, you want to see legitimate physiotherapist and work with them. Much of their advice is going to be centered around exercises, even very basic things like how to enable an injured person to re-learn how to walk again, and such. If you end up having to see a physiotherapist and simply put in some effort to take care of yourself of your own accord, the chances that a chiropractor will have anything to offer you are slim to none.

Maybe 5% of chiropractors are decent in knowing the limitations and lack of sound science behind most of what they do, and incorperate that into making a more useful individual practice of their own, but they are small minority of them. The vast majority of them are just spewing junk science rants at you and are about as legitimate as the Simpsons episode where Moe the bartender becomes a chiro by smashing people in the back with a garbage can in his new office, only they eventually realize how absurd the scam is by the end of the episode and he goes back to bartending. A very real world comparison of what they do can be summed up in what happens when you crack your fingers - it can offer temporary relief, but it's not actually changing anything that's going to make you feel better long term.

You'd be surprised at how many people are completely incapable of researching the internet to learn even the most basic information about fitness/exercising and nutrition for themselves. I still see people at work who will routinely chug down some type of protein powder meal replacement crap on top of their regular meals/snacks/caloric drinks who don't even lift, or barely lift at all, because they think it will help them automatically gain muscle. Little do they know that their logic in that instance is as a nonsensical as morbidly obese folks who like to pretend that drinking diet sodas helps cancel out all the bs calories they consume.

Many are garbage i think and will pretend to fix a problem they can't to keep a client. Its too bad because it gives others a bad rep they don't deserve. There are garbage Lawyers that have passed a bar exam doesn't mean you should hire them.

A good chiropractor will give a free consultation and if they can't help you they will tell you straight up and even give you advice on what you should be doing. I think that honesty goes a long way also as my old chiro guy was always fully booked. Even said straight up that doing certain things myself at home if i keep on it would correct the problem better than he could with adjustments. Solid guy.

I recently went to a chiropractor because I was experiencing pain in my wrist, and the practice I went to wanted to take pictures of my spine for posture.

I never went back again.

Most of them are full of crap and will try to drain your wallet rather than helping you. But there are some good ones out there.

Red flags: Claiming you need x-rays no matter what. Trying to sell you into a long term treatment plan like 3 sessions a week for 4 weeks, then 2 then 1. Anyone who claims that cracking will correct anything beyond musculoskeltal alignment. Ones who come into the office for five minutes, make an adjustment and then have you sit on blocks for ten more minutes and charge you for it.

I send clients to a chiro who is an ART practitioner and does tissue release first, will spend the entire time in the office with you fixing whatever you need, and doesn't lock people into anything beyond one or two sessions. And as a result he's insanely busy because he's actually good at his job.

Most people can fix whatever they need with a decent massage therapist who does ART.

Whether they can actually help someone or not isn't the issue

You're letting someone withzerorequired legal training to contort your body, your joints and spine are far more delicate than you realize

People become paralyzed/permanently injured from it

See a physical therapist

Lol @ them performing medical imaging, they're not trained to understand them

"Yes hmm you seem to have -insert any condition- I can fix this but it'll take 15 treatments and maintenance treatments forever"

- chiropractors

Who then proceed to treat ALL conditions with a mid back click, low back click, gentle trap massage followed by a neck click.

Waste of time, passive therapy seldom does fa for back issues, although there is some rare exceptions.

Grab a copy of 'back mechanic' and 'gift of injury' by Dr Stuart McGill (and Brian Carroll for GOF)

For the cost of a single knuckle cracker session and actually fix your issues.

One could also stumble on wrong information. Also especially unathletic people lack the coordination to do such exersizes properly without someone coaching them.
I was really unathletic in middle school and therefore my parents tried to get me a receipt so I wouldn't fail physical education and have to repeat the year. The doctor send me to physical therapy. I only had some minor back pain, but the physical therapist helped me with fixing my posture overall athletisism and mobility. After that I started lifting and became a much different person.

Then and now I look around, whenever I am walking the streets and see 100s of people with bad posture, I think about how a physical therapist could easily fix their lifes with just 4 visits and spare them decades of back pain.

I used to go to one that was free for my insurance. I know they say its a psuedo science and cant explain it or whatever but that chit felt great for my back srs. It only lasts like 1-2 weeks though but man my back and posture feel great and it feels way loose. It only takes like 5 minutes, when you think about it for what they probaby charge for 5 minutes work, probably racking in the dough and you can see how some people would want to scam.

My mom ran into one at some health fair and it really pissed me off because they tried to scare her and say her neck was all mangled and all this chit. They did a free xray and Im pretty sure they showed her an xray of someone else's neck that was all contorted or someting, and then they tried to pressure her into signing up for sessions with them that cost like a thousand dollars or some chit. She was all scared and chit but didnt sign up and went to a doctor who loked at it and told her that her neck was fine.

Been to PT twice.

First time at like a knee center, those guys knew their chit, did xrays could watch me walk and tell what was going on with my knee tracking and could tell all my muscle imbalances. They wanted me to come in like 12 times or something but I stopped after a while because I knew all the exercises to do so it was pointless doing them there for $20 copay every time but they were great in the diagnosis and gave me 1 on 1 attention to make sure I was doing them right and watching the progress in my flexibility. So it was worth it the first few times.

Then for my shoulder knots at a different place, those people sucked and did the bare minimum and when I came in barely watched me, had like 2 or 3 other people going at the same time, not paying attention if im doing it right or really monitoring me.

Bullchit, your body will never stay at 11 degrees by chiropractic work alone. You need physical therapy to train the muscles to maintain that 11 degrees.
