Does advertising products even work on most people?

I don't think I have ever purchased a product because I've seen it on an advertisement. One time I saw a cool scribing tool for woodworking but then I was like, I'll barely ever use this so I'm not wasting $30 on it. Maybe the only thing I have ever bought because of advertising was the iphone 4 in 2012. But it was more like a thing that I though was cool technology and I thought the girls liked them. Never bought another one after that though because it broke after 2 years of use. If I spend that much money on something I expect it to last more than 2 years before the screen just turns blue and then black when you turn it on. Anyway, who the fuk buys things based on advertising?

Ads usually work on our subconsciousness

you maybe don't buy a product that is advertised directly but it does plant a seed of brand recognition in your mind that you're maybe not aware of

and this might infleunce your purchasing later on

Brand awareness is huge

When someone says laundry detergent, Tide pops in their head......
Shampoo, Head & Shoulders.....

Advertising clearly works on the masses. The question is whether a difference (perceived) in product quality is due to advertising or is objective (or both?).

Take ketchup brands. I doubt anyone would say Heinz is the best. Heinz Organic tastes better to me, just as a quick example. Never seen an ad for the latter.

Advertising works on literally everyone. We all like to think we are smarter than that but that's the type of person someone in marketing has to figure out how to get to.

It's easier to manipulate people who think they are above it since they don't see it coming.

I think that "literally everyone" is overly simplistic and also factually incorrect. But what my post meant by masses is both the people whom it directly affects and others who think they are immune (but affected). I agree that the latter group exists.

I also know that there are people who aren't touched by advertising - a goal of any good marketing campaign is to try to reach as many as possible - it isn't simply universally and automatically applicable.

I wasn't really attacking your position as much as expanding on it. Of course someone living off the land in the middle of the forest or not buying anything is unmarketable to. I disagree with your last statement though. Knowing your target market and position is key as well as understanding my favourite topic in the field, hyman psychology. It's widely discussed in the inner circles when developing a strategy, product or brand. Such an interesting field.

but what made you try the Heinz Organic?

if there is a Unknown Brand Organic ketchup on the shelves chances are probably slimmer you'd decide to try this one compared to Heinz Organic since you're already familiar with the Heinz brand ketchup

I know that it feels good to feel like you are intellectually superior or “above it all”, but advertising works on essentially every single person. You are not immune to it, and neither is the guy next to you.

Where do you get that from? "Does advertising products even work on most people?" Most people. Most people. Most people. I said most people. As in the average person. Like the normal person. I consider myself the average person. A normal person. I am not "above it all". I am average. I have average IQ. I am not rich. I am average. Most people. Most people. Most people mother fuker. This is true, I've bought things from advertisements, mostly household products or things for my kid, and a doggy whistle that was chit for what it was advertised for.

Oh yeah. I have sold a lot of expensive things so to speak to people who wanted it but didn’t know it existed, or was as easy to buy as I make it

Sure. Lowes/Costco gets me all the time. They hit me with data from weeks ago when I do the cursory searches for products.
