Why can' we do for obesity what we did for cigarettes?

The entire country went after smoking hard as fuk. What used to be cool and sexy was now a terrible vice that kills you and is toxic to those around you.

Can't we do some truth ads on obesity? Back when we shamed people for things, weren't we a healthier society? Can oldcels confirm?

It's a bit trickier because it's not like certain products ALWAYS cause obesity. It's eating too much.

Because the food industry/lobby has powerful allies in congress and deep pockets to pay them off.
You saw what happened when Oprah suggested avoiding red meat and Beef, lawsuit.

Michelle Obama suggested eating more plants and healthy food at school, and some went crazy at the suggestion of healthy habits.
There is an unspoken thing, we are iron brothers and sisters, we are to support each other and...It is our duty to support our brothers and sisters in the iron game!

Nobody wants to touch obesity on that scale because where cigarettes were attacking the product, launching a similar campaign on obesity is attacking people. It would be met with a ton of resistance and IMO would be a much harder battle to fight than cigarettes.

The use of corn syrup in foods should be banned or taxed HEAVILY. Also, reduce portion sizes.

Obesity rates are higher among communities with lower household income levels.

It's harder for lower income individuals to afford higher quality "healthy" food.

If we tackled the problem then Democrats would lose their base and they can't have that. Keep enjoying that low cost soy and stop asking questions.

This. Screw taxes on "unhealthy" food. I enjoy the "unhealthy" things and it keeps me from looking like I just left a Nazi camp.

The food industry moves the world, it creates a lot of jobs, incites technological developments and added value, compared to tobacco plantations and plants which are a kind of isolated entities that were easier to demonize but still keep up raking billions.

Yeah, hard to pay for all those ads with absurdly high taxes when there are so many food products. I mean their is the soda tax. Maybe a fast food tax? The poors would riot.

Taxing any kind of food is a slippery slope. Health campaigns and healthy eating commercials/advertisements are a better option.

I really dont know where this "cheaper to eat at mcdonalds" BS comes from that tries to justify lower income individuals being fat as phuck.

It is DIRT CHEAP to get chicken breast, rice, and veggies like broccoli/spinach (and even cheaper if you go the frozen route for chicken/veggies). I eat out a couple times a week and that **** adds up to be more than groceries.

Fat people are not fat because they're poor. They're fat because they eat a lot and move too little, they're lazy, and they have no discipline.

I live in an upper middle class college town(so this could just be shifting demographics), but I rarely see many obese people anymore under the age of 25. I went to this same college about 10 years ago, and there weren't a lot of fat people but you'd have a couple in every class. Now I'd say it's extremely rare to see anyone above 20 lbs overweight.

I think this problem is in the process of fixing itself. Social Media has a way of shaming people into better diet and exercise without being an ******* about it.

Fat people are often uneducated and don't know how to cook or eat healthily.
