Best martial arts discipline for street self-defense?

CCW class at the end of September (g45 MOS)

Looking for some discipline to start up with my wife since we work on federal property and canโ€™t carry all the time

I figure my 300kg deadlift doesnโ€™t directly translate to ripping heads off

Krav Maga. If it's good enough for 2 million Israeli soldiers, it's good enough for you. I tried practicing it with my wife. Told her to throw a punch at me. I did the countermeasure and trapped her arm and tipped her back. That was the last time she practiced with me. It lasted all of 5 seconds.

Muay Thai from a school that has trainers with good boxing experience as well.

You will be able to very quickly fuk up an attacker or attackers and get going fast out of the trouble area.

Punching, kicking, kneeing, elbowing, and clinching quickly, all taught efficiently, will be more than enough for basic street defense.

I'd also throw out Kenpo (Jeff Speakman) as a consideration.

Lots of hand technique....if you're going to be in anunavoidablestreet fight you have to be quick and get in close to end it.
May take is fancy action film kicking/blocking won't get it done expeditiously.
The idea is not to trade blows....but to end it.

NOTE: I took TKD for about 1.5 years and got to green belt. (Back in '84)
That was Chois' TKD but they left California after I'd earned the green belt.

If my body (at 73) could take the training punishment I'd start out again and go Kenpo.

But....to each their own desired school of skill.

Judo and Running.

Basically if you are not locked up you should run away.

If you are locked up you should throw the person on the ground while keeping your feet and run away.

The issue is that Judo schools are few and far between so BJJ and striking are probably your best available options.

While judo is certainly better than most traditional martial arts (karate, TKD, etc) I wouldn't advise someone training in it for self-defense specifically.

Most Judo schools in the U.S. are extremely traditional, and like you said, hard to find. That aside, while judo is an excellent grappling art, its extremely dependent on usage of the Gi to achieve technique (it is primarily a throwing art, tachiwaza). Yes, I know people wear jackets, long sleeves, etc, but its just not the same lol. Good luck trying to utilize seio-nage against Chad in his t-shirt on a cool spring day.

I'm a grappler myself (4 stripe purple in Bjj, and blue in judo) and I would recommend a striking art for self-defense (Muay-thai, boxing, etc). You dont want to be grappling in a street fight if at all possible, you only really need a rudimentary understanding of grappling from a self-defense point so you can stand back up if it goes to the ground.

no matter what, cardio will be king. its always best to just run away if possible.

BJJ has takedowns, but focuses on takedowns, control, and submission. One on one it is the GOAT individually.

However, you still need a striking art to complement it.

Judo is the most specific to your needs, but like I said not very many schools.

Which is the point. IF I am striking I have the option to run. If someone is grabbing me I don't...

You want to avoid the fight and not get your head kicked in by the dbags buddy.

I went BJJ myself, but I am still at the stage where I get folded in half by people like you. LOL

I hear a lot of BJJ and i just think thats bad advice. I have both my kids in BJJ so i am not against it, its just not best for street protection.
BJJ is big on ground game, leverage, how a smaller trained man can beat a larger un trained or less trained man.

The last place you want to be in a street fight is on the ground.
I vote for Krav Maga.

CQD (Close Quarters Defense)

It's basically martial arts with a gun where you eliminate the threat as fast as humanly possible. SWAT and SF use it.

think it's a good idea to defend against bullying in school though. cause most bullies at school like to do the choke hold and grabs which the defense of those are basic lessons in jiu jitsu

as teenagers mostly everyone is the same weight and strength. i know from experience cause i got into fights in a daily and got jumped a lot in highschool, everyone for some reason likes to do the grab and choke hold **** and wrestling ****.

for self defense as adults probably adding muay thai would be the most complete thing

Iโ€™ve done Muay Thai and BJJ. If Iโ€™m a street fight I trust my Muay Thai background more as Iโ€™ll be on my feet and can run if need be.

In BJJ, sprawling is probably the technique Iโ€™d use the most in a street fight. Add in some submission wrestling with a sit out, or throwing ankle hooks in to prevent a body slam.

Iโ€™m interested in the Krav Maga aspect to defend against a knife attack. But realistically, Iโ€™m not trying to fight unarmed against a knife and would just run.

Really, thereโ€™s just so many variables that itโ€™s to hard account for.

What do you do if youโ€™re with your girlfriend/wife? You canโ€™t just run, because youโ€™ll be faster than her and sheโ€™ll get caught, raped, and killed. So you have to fight long enough for her to escape safely and still allow for you to run off if need be.

What happens if theyโ€™re multiple attackers (likely)?
What happens if theyโ€™re using bats, chains, bricks, skateboards as weapons (likely)?

A lot of variables, and a lot of them no matter how much training you have, thereโ€™s a good chance youโ€™ll still lose to a knife or a gun.

Krav doesn't allow for pressure testing. You need to get hit and face live resistance otherwise you will get your ass handed to you. Not pressure testing your martial art is how we ended up with so much bulshido.

Trying to gouge an eye after you have been thrown onto the concrete isn't the best play. Taking someone down and choking them out also isn't the best play, but BJJ teaches controlling an opponent and if you are locked up and unable to run away.

Boxing or muay thai with some wrestling/BJJ.

That being said combat sports doesn't always help in a street fight, you could become really good at them but when chit hits the fan all that training can easily go out the window as you can freeze or just throw wild haymackers.

It has to become instinct for it to really be affective as most street fights only last a few seconds.
