Why is Mexican food expensive?

Its comprised of the cheapest ingredients known to man. They had to invent salsa to mask the taste of prison grade meat. Yet when you go to an authentic Mexican restaurant they want $15 for a plate of beans and some pressed flour.

My theory....you get a free appetizer known as chips and salsa and Americans love free apps

It's $15 for a giant burrito with 4 x meat at my local hole in the wall, not a terrible price tbh

I have no idea why retards pay $5+ for a taco at the tex mex garbage spots around here though

Expect to pay $12-20 a plate here, before taxes. No thanks, I'll stick to Taco Tuesday.

Porque los gringos tienen mas dinero que seso.

It's actually not bad around here. $10-12 for a super huge burrito and chips and salsa from a local joint.

I must be too far north for cheap Mexican food.

This. Also, to be fair, even Chitpotle is more bang for your buck than standard American restaurants in the same "fast casual" category like Five Guys. Mexican food is cheaper across the board than any other cuisine.

$2.20 for a soft taco made fresh (various meats available, figure 4-6 as a dinner depending on how much you can eat)

$10-13 for a burrito with meat, beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole. Usually weigh 12-16 ounces. Never known anyone who could eat two in a meal.

$15 for a plate involving a choice of 2-3 enchiladas, 3-5 taquitos, 2 tacos, or 1 burrito, plus beans cheese and rice, but that's in a sit down restaurant.

$8 Cheeseburger combo at In n Out

$12-15 for a pancake breakfast plate at ihop or dennys

$12 for fried rice from any chinese restaurant

$14-$20 for a large pizza at a moderately decent (not dominos or little cesars) pizza joint

$8 povery loaf of bread, 3 cans of tuna, poverty mayo

Sht's expensive, but not too bad, especially if you're in a low cost housing area like Montana. I'd happily add 20-30% to those food costs if it meant a 20-30% reduction in coastal socal rent.

This guy gets it...no idea why people go to "fancy" Mexican restaurant and pay 20 bucks for 2 tacos, beans and rice....seriously wtf.
I go to those mexicans restaurant that sells their meat by the lb. I buy 2 lb of lengua with cilantro, onions and their green salsa.
I take that stuff home, warm up my own tortilla and crack open a Modelo with it.

News flash. Pretty much all the ingredients at restaurants are cheap (relative to our prices) and they mark everything up to pay for overhead and stay in business/make a profit.

If you’re paying top dollar for shorty food find a legit Mexican restaurant.

If you go to a street vendor in Mexico you won’t pay that.

FYI we have some good sketchy looking Mexican food trucks where I live that are bomb and are half the price.

Maybe in Montana, here it's cheaper than McDonalds, and tastes great. Also, salsa is TexMex, real Mexican food doesn't have salsa.

Mexican food is CHEAP.

Stop going to fancy sit down restaurants and Tex-Mex joints. Start hitting up those hole in the wall taquerias where nobody speaks a word of English. They sell tacos for like a dollar and some change srs. Even their meals are usually way less than $10 and the stuff is top tier authentic.
