Self improvement is probably the worst thing I’ve ever done (srs)
To put a long story short I spent a lot of years developing myself reading books about stoicism and the mindset of successful people, mediating for an hour or more a day having out of body higher consciousness experiences, having paradigm shifts in how I view myself and who I am, making art and understanding art, studying philosophy deeply and finding my purpose..
Yet here I am surrounded by people who watch fight compilation videos on YouTube
People who act petty or do things to start conflict for entertainment. People who are discontent and it shows in the way they act… so aimless chasing emotions minute by minute posturing around with such a small perspective on life. People whose only goal in life is the picket fence dream, nice big shiny car and a mate that’s good enough.
I’m surrounded by purposeless basics.
And I’m not saying any of this to sound like I’m so above anyone it’s just that I’m wired different and this game everyone else is playing that they’re trying to invite me into isn’t something I’m willing to partake in.
It’s rare I find someone I instantly connect with but after talking to them for a bit it’s always someone else whose on the same journey someone with a bit more going on between they’re ears. On the opposite end of the spectrum it’s always some basic mofo who feels uncomfortable around me. Some slack jawed gimp chasing any quality ass, living for the weekend, and no real goals other than getting laid and consuming.
I’m kinda venting but I’m to the point I just can’t deal with people who aren’t “on my level”. I really have to change my environment or only hang with those with my shared interests.
I never thought I’d get to the point where I’d write off someone as just an idiot but here I am.
Help?

I actually understand what you are saying. I find it difficult to be around normal people after years of self improvement.
Then i started becoming a degenerate. I stopped lifting, i stopped reading, i stopped caring, i stopped self improvement.
Guess what? I found it easier to connect with people and talk about netflix, and food, and donuts and cute little puppy dogs.
I don't know what to say homie. I don't have an answer myself.

Ok i get what you’re saying but what about this makes self improvement bad? Just because you’re into self improvement doesn’t mean you have to judge people. Try and teach them what you’ve learned.

agree that it sounds like you lack empathy
shouldn't treat or judge people any differently just because you improved yourself

you have the mind but not the result, what good is a healthy mind alone? it seems like you missed the whole point of this journey, you should have always been on your purpose and add the self improvement on top of that
before enlightenment: chop wood, carry water

did you ever chop wood and carry water??? do you have a high education, good job, own your own business etc? if not then why did you not improve yourself? stoicism teaches you to do what you are supposed to do, follow your logos.. do you want to tell me you have no higher ambition? you meet smarter people when you move up the financial ladder, why did you not?
right now it seems like you only know the theory but didnt actually use any of your knowledge

Self improvement is subjective. I don’t consider meditation self improvement, because I find it boring as phuck and don’t want to waste my time doing it.
Chasing specific goals is what I’d consider self improvement. A better physique, a new career, heck even completing a video game. It doesn’t matter - all that matters is that you accomplish what it is you’re trying to accomplish. Saving up for a car you want. Doing things like sleeping without a pillow isn’t going to bring your life meaning.

I chose a creative industry the first half of my 20’s. Enough said.
I’m currently transitioning into the world I was meant to be apart of. This was the year I was going to go hard with events and meetups of likeminded people but covid happened.

I had two friends. Both of them I created things with. Ya know, music, comedy bits, short stories, websites, blogs, throwing concerts, all kinds of cool sh!t. But they both had a defeatist mindset, in their own ways. They were their own worst enemy, and dragged down people around them.
One was always negative. Pessimistic as fuk. Dry tone. Always talking down to everything everyone else did. For example, he claimed to play instruments but said"I only do it in my spare time, alone, and don't want people to hear me play. I don't have ego."Always started projects, claimed to be "overseer," then let everyone else do the work. Very bossy, manipulative...true blue narcissist / sociopath. Would get jealous of his friend's successes, would diminish accomplishments and always talk down on victories to try and lessen them.
The other friend never worked a day in his life. Medical condition that is 50% justified, but he definitely 50% milks it. Brilliant mind. Lazy, but in a creative setting great person to bounce ideas back and forth with. This one got sucked into political ideologies, for one. But when our project finally had the key to move forward, and a logical path to potentially major successes, he disappeared. Totally allergic to any sort of responsibility, fear of success. Absolutely no work ethic, or desire to accomplish anything.
Anyway, these were my two closest friends. I cut the first one outta my life when he tried to trash me for a massive accomplishment. The other kid disappeared bit by bit, and the last I ever heard from him was when I had an in to take a project we had worked on for years to the next level. It was right around the same time I ditched one and the other ditched me. I had new goals, and these people sort of organically dropped outta my life. Haven't heard from either of them in 2, 3, maybe 4 years now? Have no idea how they're doing or what they've been up to. I've seen more success and made strides towards living a dream life in that time more than ever before. I definitely think part of it was just their terrible vibe dragging me down. The first kid was a full on narcissist / sociopath, though, and a much worse offender. Second was a lay down 'n' rotter.
Cut the dead weight, let them sink on their own. Don't take the scorpion across the river.

Start reading Carl Jung, you need to individuate, the goal of individuation is to become who YOU are, not model yourself off some successful person who everyone looks up to, you have your own path you need to re discover it.

I skimmed, but you are writing yourself off?
The best self improvement technique i know is "the Rocco".
Basically you ask yourself "What would Rocco Siffredi, do?"
normally the answer is "fuc them deep and hard in the ass"
and you would be surprised what (back)doors this has opened for me.
The amount of women who quickly realise that my only goal and strategy is to absolutely fuc their ass into oblivion has proven better than any phd in psychology.
They soon realise my hard cock cannot be bargained with, it cant be reasoned with, it doesn't feel pity or remorse or fear, and it absolutely will not stop... EVER, untill their booty is dead or they are screaming "YOU OWN THIS BOOTY".

Good on you for cutting contact with those guys I’ve done the same in the past with creative friends.
Always in the “idea phase” when it’s time to execute instead of talking out they’re ass they disappear or cut corners

Sounds like a lot of cope. There are lots of people making more money than you, banging a hotter wife than you, and have a brighter future with a family and loving it more than you. You're burned out trying to improve yourself and not settle but fact is you missed the bus and at this point you should be focusing on building up a family and the people around you, not just focusing on making yourself better. No one gives a **** how long you can meditate or whatever skills you've been working on. Life as an adult is about supporting other people.

so many on that spiritual chit will try to separate themselves over the "normies"
interdasting ain't it.
all the 'selflessness' turns into selfishness

The biggest issue I see with people who go down the self improvement road, is that they see life as a resume of skills to complete ("read 100 books", "bench 2 plates", etc) and then judge anyone who has less of a resume than them. It's not about bettering themselves, it's about their insecurity needing to find a way to one-up other people. If you remember NVious, he was the absolute worst person about this.
I get about looking down on the plebs, one of my worst character traits is that I shoot holes in everyone I meet. But thank God I never fell into that "everyone else but me is a sheep!" trap. A comforting lie to tell a wounded ego for sure. Everyone's dealing with their own chit, but no one's an empty automaton, and it's sure as chit isn't because they haven't read Tolstoy like an enlightened superior person has. If you start believing they are, then you really just don't know them well enough.
Tl;dr

ETA: an example came to mind when I re-read this post.
Dude is a one-track grinder with nary a spark of creativity in him, and he could really use one of those idea men to help him along. Yes, I've been around those liberal arts "creative" types before, and they're generally annoying as phuck. But I wouldn't automatically write them off because they're on a lower-earning path than a machine learning engineer. Once you've been around enough STEM drones, you even learn to value those folks a bit regardless of whether you get along with them.

I’m kinda venting but I’m to the point I just can’t deal with people who aren’t “on my level”. I really have to change my environment or only hang with those with my shared interests.
I never thought I’d get to the point where I’d write off someone as just an idiot but here I am.
Help?

Work on your humility and understanding. I mean, this sentence is almost absurd: "someone else whose on the same journey someone with a bit more going on between they’re ears", as is your shallow assessment of people and yourself, and you can be sure that there are many people who write you off as an idiot.
Where does that leave you?

And I’m not saying any of this to sound like I’m so above anyone it’s just that I’m wired different and this game everyone else is playing that they’re trying to invite me into isn’t something I’m willing to partake in.

Sounds like you're just trying to 'find yourself' and complaining that other people are living their lives in their own way.

after enlightenment: chop wood, carry water
did you ever chop wood and carry water??? do you have a high education, good job, own your own business etc? if not then why did you not improve yourself? stoicism teaches you to do what you are supposed to do, follow your logos.. do you want to tell me you have no higher ambition? you meet smarter people when you move up the financial ladder, why did you not?
right now it seems like you only know the theory but didnt actually use any of your knowledge

Chasing specific goals is what I’d consider self improvement. A better physique, a new career, heck even completing a video game. It doesn’t matter - all that matters is that you accomplish what it is you’re trying to accomplish. Saving up for a car you want. Doing things like sleeping without a pillow isn’t going to bring your life meaning.

its purpose is to quiet down the default brain.... you can do same with microdosing LSD which is what i been doing as i find it boring too but the results = more brain energy to have the deep thoughts that make everything better

OP, what you are experiencing is simply the ego finding a new way to inflate itself. Happens to all of us when we go on a self improvement journey.
