BJJ gym is reopening, reps til out

Marcelo's has had a rough time with restrictions during quarantine, but they're finally cleared to reopen on a limited/structured basis (we train with the same group of people; wear masks; our teams train only 2 x a week). I don't even mind all of that. I'm ecstatic. I have missed it so much. Training with a few friends on my own and with my girlfriend has been good, but there's no replacing the gym vibe.

Only took me a month to go from 4 days a week training to 2 days a week training for this very reason. Elbows and shoulders so fuked up I couldn't even lift on my days off. I don't care about this chit like that. I'm not trying to compete, just want to be effective on the ground in an altercation so I'm more of a casual now but still put in work every week.

Yeah if you're planning on competing in MMA or BJJ you're gonna be able to lift 2 weeks, max, or else youre going to get wrecked by someone in the technique department. Unless youre on a bicycle of course, I feel like 2 days max is what most humans could handle lifting wise while competing in mma/bjj

Good stuff op. Our ma clubs have been open for quite some time now here in Western oz but I have moved into a country area with limited training options. (No judo, no kyokushin fml) I may have to take up bjj instead though crappling bores me to tears

I feel like there are smarter ways to combine it. I always liked the idea of 15-20minutes of a heavy barbell excersize directly before martial arts (use 5/3/1, Juggernaut method or something similar leave out the acessories unless you need to adress some weakness). You can progress on the big 3/4 and get stronger while not really losing time from Martial arts or hurting your recovery much.
You obviously need a martial arts gym with a squat rack, that's opened before classes begin though.

There is German Jiu Jutsu, which includes stricks and kicks in competitions and limits ground time to 30s
There is sport Jiu Jutsu, which has contests in three different styles(self-defense, limited MMA, ne waza grappling)
There are like a bazillion traditional styles
There are many jiu jutsu styles, which evolved into their own martial art like Judo, Sambo, Aikido

This doesn't sound entirely wrong. Training the CNS more than anything just to keep strength up. Doing a traditional bodybuilding bro-split where you're spending tons of times wearing on joints is out of the question.

It probably depends on how advanced one is a lifter, but my lifts kept progressing that way and it was way less overall workload. I felt more relaxed and my performance during the grappling sessions my performance didn't suffer noticably from lfting heavy before either. I honestly got the idea from some friend's Crossfit gym, where they did 5/3/1 than instead of Acessories the Crossfit Workout of the Day.
Personally I never saw a practical reason to keep the strength work separate from the rest of my training. Than again some really advanced lifter might fail progressing that way. It's not a proven way to train either just something that works well for me.
