The ending of The Thing (1982)

Just watched 1982 The Thing and holy chit was I missing out all those years.
Kurt Russell nails the role, and the ambiguous ending was excellent. I concluded that Childs was indeed a Thing for a couple reasons.

1. He just wonders out of a snow storm, having been missing for ages with no explanation.

2. His coat is of a different colour, meaning he changed coat for no reason other than because his original coat was torn up from being attacked.

3. He says to MacReady 'so you're the only one who made it' rather than, 'so WE are the only ones who made it'

Thoughts? And other suggestions for similar movies?

Great movie. When you watch it you have very low expectations but gd if they make movies like that anymore.

The way they used paranoia and details was so well done people talk about it for decades, its so rare and timeless.

Top 5 movie of all time.

Repped. Easily one of my best films and that ending is still speculated today. Even carpenter doesn't know . I think he just left it open to interpretation .

Another film is American Psycho. Did bateman commit those crimes or was it all in his head.

I would be careful applying the earring/metal logic from the 2011 film, that doesn't necessarily apply to Carpenter's version. Can't take rules from a future film and retroactively apply them to the original.

Good point. And yeah, "The Thing" is one of the GOAT horror/ sci-fi flicks. I hadn't heard that logic about Childs saying "So you're the only one who made it", but-that makes sense.


Oh-and the 2011 remake was trash.

The 2002 videogame was the official sequel to the movie and was considered canon until all of the recent fan theories started showing up online and Carpenter himself starting acting coy about whether one or the other was a thing at the end.

The game picks up right after the events in the movie. In the game, you find Childs' dead frozen body early on, so he was human at the end of the movie.

You don't run into MacReady until late in the game. It appears he's human and he behaves as a human would, but it's never fully explained how he survived the antarctic cold nor where he's been for 3 months. However, one possible answer is a huge spoiler for the game, so I don't want to ruin that for anyone.

So, most likely Carpenter's original intention was that both were human.

I've only seen the 2011 one, going to have to watch the 1982 one sometime. The cgi in this newer one was weird asf.

One of my favorite movies. "Escape from NY/LA" and "They Live" are worth lookin at if you like Carpenters style. Also, if you've ever heard of the X-COM games, the original one from the early 90's, UFO Defense, reminds me of a Carpenter movie with its music and atmosphere.

X-COM holy ****, haven't heard of that game in decades. Loved the early versions where it was turn based.... and the flight simulator one where you had to chase down alien ships in space was dope too.

EDIT: X-COM Interceptor was the flight sim one.

Haven't seen that movie in years need to re watch it someday, but I'll always remember that scene when the dog turns into the alien thing holy chit that was demonic.

Its not a remake its a prequel. I like the 2011 movie, its not as good as the 1982 one but I can watch either one any time its on.
